    To those discussing a possible Buxton retirement or not: Stephen Strasburg has just announced his retirement, leaving millions on the table. So, it does happen.

    Yes, this came out back in early May, when Buxton was batting .900 OPS. Success has a thousand fathers; an orphan, none.

    What I am not a fan of is using Duran for 2 innings. Duran has said himself he doesn’t like going out for a second inning of relief. I think you give Duran one inning and then take your chances. Those types of guys get all wound up for one big inning of whup-ass, pardon my french, and then they’re spent. They either finish in the handshake line or they come in and sit and cool all the way down. Hard for them to warm back up, and in Duran’s case, he has said as much. Postseason, sure. But not games like today. That’s not how those guys are built. Also, Duran is only a couple years removed from serious shoulder issue. It’s just not worth it to me, to chase a single win on the arm of your by far best reliever when all the other teams were sellers at the deadline. I know that sounds kind of backwards, that’s where we’re at. Just my opinion.

    Yup, we need to line up Lopez and Gray for the first two games, hope they pitch well, and that Rocco doesn’t get cold feet and pull them out of the game too soon.

    This makes it sound like Lewis had trouble with the transfer, or something. I just watched the replay. Lewis made a hell of a play. The only problem was Lewis was playing too deep and that’s not necessarily Lewis’s fault.

    To start, I feel like Buxton can be worked into big league games an inning or two at a time. Late in games they are winning big. Ramp him up that way. By the end of September he can be playing full games.

    Honest question: would you rehab Buxton in St Paul? Gladden seemed to say Buxton should be sent out, too St Paul or the Ft Myers complex, but I don’t think I agree. What say you?

    I heard the radio guys talking about Buxton has been doing some significant work in center field, for his return. So that’s a big thing to keep an eye out for soon. I shake my damn head, but only because the 7 dimensional chess plan to have him ready for the postseason may be coming to fruition. 🙃 Another angle to that is Michael Taylor is kind of growing on me, in a good way.

    It was 3) Castro to IL. I think we all expect today will be Keuchel’s last start, good bad or indifferent. Ryan is already back with the Twins to throw his next bullpen and will apparently come back off the IL when his turn is up again. DFA’ing Luplow seems like a not difficult thing to do. Same with optioning Sands/Winder. However, I missed this new Correa injury, unless people are just responding to another bad streak at the plate.

    They brought up Kirilloff to debut in the 2020 playoffs, so it wouldn't be coming out of nowhere if Lee made his debut in 2023. However, the Twins have a nice lineup right now, hitting better and making better contact, so unless things go downhill fast at some point, it would surprise me.

    You think that Martin could play shortstop next year for the Twins, or could play shortstop even this year for the Twins if his elbow issues are cleared up?

    Provus said during the broadcast, when they were only a run down, that he felt like the Twins should chase the win anyway and line up Thielbar, Jax, and Duran to keep the game close. Provus might have been right. So I’d say Rocco’s ‘feel for the game’ or lack thereof is still something that will need to be overcome if the Twins are going to make any noise later.

    Actually, I don’t disagree. I needed a starting pitcher comp on the Twins, even though there isn’t a very good one. I didn’t want to use Sonny Gray, so I used Maeda. Maybe I should have used Joe Ryan….

    I want to see a competitive AL Central race as much as the next guy, but Cleveland has had the looks of a 90 loss team since about mid-June. Their GM apparently saw the same thing I was seeing. Or vice versa. Good year for them to retool. I’m seeing people really downplaying that 1B prospect. Sounds more like sour grapes, but who knows. You mention he will have impact in 2027. By that timeline, we should expect Julien to start having an impact by 2026, then? By the way, welcome to Twins Daily. 🙂

    Cleveland and Minnesota should be dueling it out with 90-plus win seasons year after year. That’s what a fun summer of baseball looks like to me!

    Civale is doing great but is a continual injury risk. They definitely sold high. Gutsy and probably smart. Someone compared Manzardo to Miranda, lol, did they even look at their minor league numbers? What Cleveland did here was the equivalent of the Twins trading Gallo and Maeda. If the Twins had done that, all of the writers on here would be praising the front office to no end. And none of the writers are mentioning how Cleveland lost their top two starters to injury. Convenient omission. Imagine the angst if the Twins had lost two of their best starters. (No, Mahle doesn’t count.) This was the perfect season for Cleveland to retool. They can give some of their young starters a nice run, see how they perform. And Cleveland does have some nice young starters ready for the chance to break through. They always do. I don’t think they are trying to win the division this year. All the better for the Twins who seem to be in “win now” mode anyway. Unlike the Twins, Cleveland does have some problems to address in the offseason, but Antonetti has set them up nicely for 2024 and beyond.
