The teaser text needs to be clearer in my opinion, but it is intriguing, but get to the point faster… I don’t necessarbuy the premise that a high K rate or low walk rate signifies an Ace. Carlos Silva, Kevin Slowey and Phil Hughes had low 4% walk rates. That said, Lopez is our ace in the same way Berrios was, even though another pitcher may be pitching better at any given time (right now Joe Ryan). Does the article mention anything about Lopez’s dip in velocity in a recent game or two, or anything about his comments thereof? I would be interested in exclusive information like that. @Matthew Trueblood

Wasn’t there a list of ‘honorable mentions’ we could also disparage? This thread had such potential. 🙂 I’ll just say that Kirilloff belongs at first base, not in the outfield. He has not been great at first base recently either, that I’ve seen, but first base is his position. It’s probably too late but I’d like to see the team show more confidence in some of their young guys and give them run as full time players. Kirilloff seems like a guy who would respond well to that. It looks like he has overcome his wrist issues and we should be glad about that. See if we can lock him in, instead of hiding him on the bench every time a lefty comes around. The obsession with platoon splits is ridiculous too but I will save that for the ‘Rocco’s Top 5 Platoon Split Nightmares’ article. It’s amazing the guy gets any sleep at all.

Never seen a better second half of basketball than the Wolves just played, in Game 7 in Denver tonight. I used to mock the NBA for being a game of one on one and individual performances and stuff like that, but that was not what we saw here. Athleticism, defense, creating shots, making shots (finally), perseverance, everything. wow it got a little weird in the final couple minutes but Denver looked beat at that point. Yes! Save me a seat on the bandwagon!

The radio guys were gushing over Buxton’s speed creating that run in the 9th. True enough, but Buxton looked out on the force at second, which would have ended the game. And then got caught in the rundown but caught a break. Speaking of rundowns, it’s crazy that Julien just stood at his position when Gimenez was hung out to dry between second and third. If you are an infielder (including pitcher) and not being useful during a play, and there’s a base uncovered, go cover the empty base. Correa took off following Gimenez when Gimenez broke for third, which was the right play. But then Correa had to go back and cover second when Julien wasn’t there. That might have thrown off Vazquez that no one was really at the bag. Correa and Julien have this weird thing where Correa seems to do all the work on any difficult or unusual play that isn’t straightforward cut & dry. Not good!

Who broke this payroll information news in the first place? I don’t recall it being Pohlad. I think the Twins are in decent shape—this year anyway.

This is partly why I mentioned Andrew Miller. I think Varland would work really well in that type of role, as a guy who comes in firing and pitches through 5 or 6 batters sometime around the 6th, 7th innings. I think that was the plan for Varland in the postseason last year but the games didn’t really pan out for that to happen.

When Falvey came over from Cleveland, it was very exciting. Cleveland had Kluber and some other guys, picked up Andrew Miller, and turned Cody Allen into a top closer. Maybe we thought Falvey could do the same thing here. When Falvey came over from Cleveland, nobody had even heard of Shane Bieber yet—and now Bieber is a washed up veteran already on his way out to make room for the new guys. 🙂

I think for most fans who just want to be a fan and cheer on the Twins, then no, it probably doesn’t matter how your team acquires its pitchers. Otherwise, yes it might be worthwhile to think about scouting and how pitching is acquired. Trades and free agency are far more risky and expensive than the amateur draft.

It’s not on the Twins to do anything there, not in my opinion. Another umpire on another day might have stopped play, though the umpire was justified in letting play continue. I think it’s on Seattle to do something. No one on Seattle was the quick thinker there. Seems like there was a moment where the first baseman might have thrown his arms up, and gotten the umpire to stop play. Or maybe the manager shouts and jumps out of the dugout. the crowd was cheering…… Love the article and would like to see more individual plays broken down this way, plays that potentially swing the game.

Also agree. Great commentary, Nick. I’ll just say contracting is hard and too many moving parts for me to understand here. We can hope that the organization is trying to gut out one more difficult year, for the promise of something better or transformative in 2025. Not likely but maybe. The other thing is: I do disagree with the suggestion that Derek Falvey is an innocent party here. If Falvey and Levine are going to require ever-increasing record payrolls to put competitive teams on the field, year after year, then you should take it as just another sign that they are not the guys for the job. I mean, pretty much anyone could be the GM in that scenario. And yes you can still get kicked out of local bars for asking them to put the Twins game on. The 2012-2014 years did a number on this franchise. 🙂

Welcome Back, José Miranda. We Missed You.
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Here is what you said about Miranda in March: “We have to hope that Miranda’s step backward in 2023 was based on injury, but he’s likely lost his Opening Day role, regardless of whether that's true or not. It doesn’t seem like Miranda is seen as much of a third baseman at this point, leaving him confined to first base and DH.” If you remember, Miranda started as the everyday third basemen in 2023 and went through that bad slump in April. I think what Miranda needed during that stretch was a couple more days off, or some run at DH, to correct whatever mental or physical block he was having. If Miranda was hurt at the start of 2023 (possible), then he should have been on the IL. (Something we have said about the Twins decision-making many times before, about many other players). The swing comparison, or not being able to handle elevated fastballs as well last year, I will guess stemmed from fatigue or whatever physical deficiency (most likely shoulder). All that said, i hope he keeps up the success. I don’t know what the future holds for him after Lewis returns. -
Short term, Buxton does not go to IL: Castro Short term, Buxton does go to IL: call up Martin again and let him play. Bummer about the things you are all saying about Martin’s arm and instincts. Paul Molitor said he thought Martin might develop into a semi-full-time CF or 2B option; dont remember the exact quote, though. Long term: you go with Buxton and keep signing guys like Taylor and Margot if internal options don’t develop. Long term only means two or three more seasons to me. If worse comes to worst and Buxton truly cannot stay healthy, and his base salary is so low, would it be cost effective to just put him on the 60-day IL for long periods or ask him to waive his trade clause?

I think the LaRussa experiment really set this franchise back. They were poised to be really good, then hire an old guy to suck all the life out of the room. The Cease trade, just the final nail in the coffin

Open conversation about the state of the forums

This is a good point. Then again, having a lot of money (and buying a TD subscription) does not necessarily mean you have a lot of smart things to say. But yes where I will agree with you is in an ideal world, there could be some more content considerations for your membership beyond just having the ad free experience. Thanks for being a caretaker! -

I still love the site, but loved it more when it felt more like a labor of love among the owners and went more in depth on issues. Too many of the titles now just feel like click bait. There may be good stuff in there but I'm not biting. I feel like the current model chases away some good conversation and conversationalists. Scrolling through the news article titles, you might think Julien has already been both DFA'd and awarded the league MVP -- and it's not even May. 🙂 They haven't even unpacked their bags from spring training yet. I also have to wonder if the TwinsDaily editorial slant leaks into the research articles, like the caretaker article about the Twins offense needing to hit more like Austin Martin--you mean the guy they just optioned to St. Paul? Good writing is hard, I get it. I didn't read it so I shouldn't judge beyond that. I do like the direction back towards deeper dives and magazine, old SI type of professional stuff, would be fantastic. By the way, become a Twins Daily caretaker There are some great blogs here. I wish I was more in the habit of checking them and I wish more were promoted. Thank you to everyone who participates in those! -
Should they look at Cole Sands in the rotation?
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to jorgenswest's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
They could also stretch out Sands on the fly, up here with the Twins. Sands last worked yesterday, same as Ober. The Twins could assign both to pitch in the Thursday matinee against the White Sox, when it’s Ober’s turn again, with a plan something like Ober for 5 or 6 and Sands for 3 or 4 innings. Although it would be understandable to bring in a closer if the Twins held a one or two run lead in the 9th that day. Varland would then pitch the next night in L.A. with a rested bullpen. If they then decide Varland should go back to AAA after that Angels start, and if Sands comes out of that hypothetical Thursday performance feeling good, then Sands could slip into Varlands spot in the rotation. I’m not saying this should happen or not. It is a valid discussion topic and fun to chew on. When I watched Sands make starts in 2022, my gut said he was not cut to be a starter, but things can change, and the Twins do need to be looking for starters here and now.- 44 replies

This team is fun, right?!?!?!?!
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I could give you a funny answer, but the honest answer is I don’t remember. 31 pitches times 20 seconds between pitches would be at least 10 minutes without a ball put in play.
