  1. Also agree. Great commentary, Nick. I’ll just say contracting is hard and too many moving parts for me to understand here. We can hope that the organization is trying to gut out one more difficult year, for the promise of something better or transformative in 2025. Not likely but maybe. The other thing is: I do disagree with the suggestion that Derek Falvey is an innocent party here. If Falvey and Levine are going to require ever-increasing record payrolls to put competitive teams on the field, year after year, then you should take it as just another sign that they are not the guys for the job. I mean, pretty much anyone could be the GM in that scenario. And yes you can still get kicked out of local bars for asking them to put the Twins game on. The 2012-2014 years did a number on this franchise. 🙂
  2. Here is what you said about Miranda in March: “We have to hope that Miranda’s step backward in 2023 was based on injury, but he’s likely lost his Opening Day role, regardless of whether that's true or not. It doesn’t seem like Miranda is seen as much of a third baseman at this point, leaving him confined to first base and DH.” If you remember, Miranda started as the everyday third basemen in 2023 and went through that bad slump in April. I think what Miranda needed during that stretch was a couple more days off, or some run at DH, to correct whatever mental or physical block he was having. If Miranda was hurt at the start of 2023 (possible), then he should have been on the IL. (Something we have said about the Twins decision-making many times before, about many other players). The swing comparison, or not being able to handle elevated fastballs as well last year, I will guess stemmed from fatigue or whatever physical deficiency (most likely shoulder). All that said, i hope he keeps up the success. I don’t know what the future holds for him after Lewis returns.
  3. Short term, Buxton does not go to IL: Castro Short term, Buxton does go to IL: call up Martin again and let him play. Bummer about the things you are all saying about Martin’s arm and instincts. Paul Molitor said he thought Martin might develop into a semi-full-time CF or 2B option; dont remember the exact quote, though. Long term: you go with Buxton and keep signing guys like Taylor and Margot if internal options don’t develop. Long term only means two or three more seasons to me. If worse comes to worst and Buxton truly cannot stay healthy, and his base salary is so low, would it be cost effective to just put him on the 60-day IL for long periods or ask him to waive his trade clause?
  4. I think the LaRussa experiment really set this franchise back. They were poised to be really good, then hire an old guy to suck all the life out of the room. The Cease trade, just the final nail in the coffin
  5. Yeah I was just gonna say, Chicago is such a poverty franchise, it doesn’t feel for a minute like the Twins are in danger of losing tonight or tomorrow
  6. This is a good point. Then again, having a lot of money (and buying a TD subscription) does not necessarily mean you have a lot of smart things to say. But yes where I will agree with you is in an ideal world, there could be some more content considerations for your membership beyond just having the ad free experience. Thanks for being a caretaker!
  7. I still love the site, but loved it more when it felt more like a labor of love among the owners and went more in depth on issues. Too many of the titles now just feel like click bait. There may be good stuff in there but I'm not biting. I feel like the current model chases away some good conversation and conversationalists. Scrolling through the news article titles, you might think Julien has already been both DFA'd and awarded the league MVP -- and it's not even May. 🙂 They haven't even unpacked their bags from spring training yet. I also have to wonder if the TwinsDaily editorial slant leaks into the research articles, like the caretaker article about the Twins offense needing to hit more like Austin Martin--you mean the guy they just optioned to St. Paul? Good writing is hard, I get it. I didn't read it so I shouldn't judge beyond that. I do like the direction back towards deeper dives and magazine, old SI type of professional stuff, would be fantastic. By the way, become a Twins Daily caretaker There are some great blogs here. I wish I was more in the habit of checking them and I wish more were promoted. Thank you to everyone who participates in those!
  8. MLB needs a new way to allocate players to all the various teams. The current system isn’t very fair to the Twins. Pohlad should bring this topic up at the next owners meeting, see what some of the other owners have to say about it. 🙂
  9. They could also stretch out Sands on the fly, up here with the Twins. Sands last worked yesterday, same as Ober. The Twins could assign both to pitch in the Thursday matinee against the White Sox, when it’s Ober’s turn again, with a plan something like Ober for 5 or 6 and Sands for 3 or 4 innings. Although it would be understandable to bring in a closer if the Twins held a one or two run lead in the 9th that day. Varland would then pitch the next night in L.A. with a rested bullpen. If they then decide Varland should go back to AAA after that Angels start, and if Sands comes out of that hypothetical Thursday performance feeling good, then Sands could slip into Varlands spot in the rotation. I’m not saying this should happen or not. It is a valid discussion topic and fun to chew on. When I watched Sands make starts in 2022, my gut said he was not cut to be a starter, but things can change, and the Twins do need to be looking for starters here and now.
  10. I could give you a funny answer, but the honest answer is I don’t remember. 31 pitches times 20 seconds between pitches would be at least 10 minutes without a ball put in play.
  11. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you.... the bottom of the 3rd inning, April 6th: Ball, foul, ball, strike, ball, foul, strike, foul, ball, ball, ball, strike, ball, strike, ball, ball, ball, strike, foul, foul, strike*, ball, strike, ball, strike, ball, ball, strike, ball, ball, foul, strike. * Julien stole second
  12. You might already have seen, the San Francisco Giants moved Jordan Hicks to the rotation this season. The current Giants front office is no longer the same people who won those World Series in 2010-2014 but they are highly regarded. Obviously we’ve seen guys do it in the past. It worked for Smoltz going back to the rotation, not so well for Aguilera. As far as Jordan Hicks, he has dialed back his fastball from 99-102 as a reliever, to about 95-98 this year as a starter. Otherwise I don’t know much else about the project.
  13. Man, this Holliday kid looks rawer than a rug burn on your shin after a dive on the Metrodome turf ba-dum tschhhh (i’m still workshopping some of these)
  14. Heh, each starter on the Orioles tonight has now scored exactly 1 of the 9 runs
  15. This guy looks rawer than a rough draft of an Eddie Murphy stand-up ba dum tschhhhh
  16. That’s 9 balls in play, in four innings, with exit velos higher than 100mph Nine
  17. That’s not very nice! Local kid & probably has family reading this! ___ speaking of local, how about local kid Michael Busch with that Cubs home run streak
  18. You would think it stands for a word starting with J, but nope
  19. I just found out Christopher J Paddack’s middle initial ‘J’ stands for ‘Hard Contact’
  20. Actually, look at it as a payroll reset after the large spike increase in payroll that Pohlad gave to Falvey in 2022 and 2023. People on this site talk about going “all in” well, the Twins have actually been doing that, and no one noticed
  21. Holliday looks rawer than raw cookie dough
  22. Molitor was a DH for the Twins from 1996 to 1998. View full player
  23. Molitor was a DH for the Twins from 1996 to 1998.
  24. Ohio native Larry Hisle played five seasons for the Minnesota Twins, from 1973 to 1977. Hisle was productive during these years, providing power and never dipping below an OPS+ of 111. He played left field and center field in equal measure. In 1977 Hisle led the American League in Ribbies with 119. Hisle signed with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1978. Very well liked across baseball, Hisle retired prior to the 1983 season. From there, Hisle was immediately invited into coaching and staying involved in MLB. Heading into 2024, Hisle continues with the Milwaukee Brewers in community youth outreach. View full player
