  1. I think what we're seeing here is how difficult it is to build a contending team for $125M. To get down to that number they have to give up a lot. You either sacrifice in the infield (Polanco or Farmer), the rotation (Gray and Maeda), behind the plate (Vazquez) or in the outfield (Kepler).
  2. Atlanta had legitimate bids for both Gray and Nola. The Twins didn't.
  3. You actually can't. Unless they grab Austin Hedges right now the best available "all defense" catchers who hit about as well as Vazquez (Stallings and Caratini) are about 10 runs worse than Vazquez defensively. They'll also cost $3-4M. It will be hard to trade Vazquez while Hedges is still available as a free agent.
  4. Lopez, Ryan, Ober, Paddack, ??? It's Varland or Woods-Richardson for the #5 spot at the moment.
  5. Too soon to move him to the bullpen. Give him another shot in the rotation. They need starting pitching pretty desperately right now after losing Gray and Maeda. I'd rather take a few other washed up free agent starters and turn them into relievers.
  6. 2024 MLB Free Agents Tracker | Spotrac You can pay $3M for Jacob Stallings or Victor Caratini. They could go with a bat-first player like Knizer or Gary Sanchez but that's why they went out and got Vazquez in the first place.
  7. Yes, it's too bad that the Twins can't compete for free agents with large market behemoths like Cincinnati.
  8. It is interesting to see the contrasting opinions on Kepler. If he doesn't have much trade value then he's definitely not getting a qualifying offer. If he's worth a QO then he's worth some other team's top 5 prospect. I guess the key is to find the team that would want to give Kepler a QO (hint, it isn't the penny-pinching Twins) and trade him for their 1st-round-pick level talent. That would be a great plan if the Twins had finished in 3rd place and were looking to rebuild and get younger. The problem for the Twins is they're the favorite to win the division and they don't have anyone who is a good bet to replace Kepler's production from within. They're also going to have to pay more money to replace him in free agency. The best answer is probably to keep him.
  9. If Matz was on the Twins payroll Falvey would be looking to trade him to free up that money.
  10. I'm not puzzled at all. They needed hitting pretty desperately and that is Jeffers, not Vazquez. There were also plenty of off-days in the playoff schedule to rest Jeffers.
  11. Falvey didn't say the team would get better, just cheaper. That's the priority - lower the payroll. That means they will be giving up someone who has some value to the team in order to reduce the payroll. It is just a question of which player will be sent elsewhere.
  12. He's never been a solid #2 pitcher before but we can all hope for improvement. His innings will be limited coming off a season of injury rehab.
  13. I think Pablo Lopez could have a season as good as they got from Gray in 2023 but I don't expect anyone else on the roster to pitch that well. Gray had the best season we've seen from a Twins pitcher since Johan Santana. I would give Paddack a less than 5% chance to pitch that well. I would be happy if Paddack could plug the hole left by Maeda.
  14. Probably not, but a CYA runner-up season is worth around $45M so he can regress a LOT and still provide $25M worth of value to the Cardinals.
  15. I don't see that at all. If anything it's harder to get into the Hall of Fame by way of the writers than ever.
  16. That's just flat out wrong. From 2004-2010 Chase Utley was clearly the best fielding 2B in the game. He's this generation's Bobby Grich and he might get overlooked unfairly just like Grich.
  17. Counterpoint: Jason Heyward 1 year $9M.
  18. Woods-Richardson is the only one who had any kind of national notoriety. He's still young enough to have a chance in the rotation. Balazovic had upside but was always seen as a high risk to achieve it. If he was a "lock for the MLB rotation" he should have been rated a top 50 prospect in MLB. Sands and Headrick look like they could contribute to the bullpen which was their projection from the start. I think you may have had too high of expectations. Most pitching prospects fail. The Twins have done better than some orgs at converting mid-round picks into useful pitchers (see Varland and Ober) and Festa looks like another that could do the same. They haven't spent top picks on pitchers other than Petty, Prielipp and Soto. They have done almost nothing bringing in pitchers through international free agency.
  19. Chase Utley is as qualified as Mauer, if not moreso. Take off your Kasota Gold colored glasses. This is the real reason why Mauer will not get inducted on the first ballot - he's not the best player on the ballot. He's not even one of the top 5 players on the ballot. What will be strange is two players who weren't better than Mauer (Helton and Wagner) are the top two returning vote getters and the most likely to get inducted along with Adrian Beltre - who will get in on the first ballot.
  20. I have already seen national writers predicting that the Sonny Gray signing will be the bargain among all the pitchers signing this offseason. It sounds like he gave the Cardinals a hometown discount.
  21. Correa absolutely earned his paycheck in 2022. The Twins have received 7 WAR for $68M over 2 seasons which is just slightly more than the going rate of $9M/WAR for free agents. Then they got a fantastic postseason performance from him which nearly makes up the $5M difference.
  22. I'm not ready to make that waiver claim this early in the offseason. Matz is a fit for a bad team who needs someone to eat innings with the hope of flipping them at the trade deadline.
  23. No kidding. I've already seen better pitchers than Balazovic non-tendered.
