  1. I wouldn't give anyone a long-term contract until after I had to add them to the 40 man roster. Giving Royce Lewis a contract that early would have burned 2 years rehabbing knee injuries. For me the extension priorities are Duran and Jeffers. Ober and Ryan are already controlled into their 30s. Julien and Lewis aren't even eligible for arbitration yet.
  2. I don't see the Twins as short on outfielders. They're short on pitching. I would trade Nick Gordon for Tyrone Taylor because I think Taylor is a better fit for the Twins roster.
  3. There are more playoff spots available than large market teams. The Dodgers can buy one spot but they can't buy a championship. It's probably a good thing for MLB to have Ohtani marketed to the largest possible audience.
  4. I can find parking near Target Field for $10, not sure why you're paying $100. I also have no problem finding tickets for less than $100. If you really want to go on the cheap you're also allowed to bring your own food into Target Field. Going to a major league game isn't cheap but it doesn't have to be $500 for 3 people.
  5. That's $100M more than I thought he would get
  6. If they want to run a team on a tight budget they can't buy relievers at retail. Instead they need to find some pitchers who have failed in the rotation (ERA around 5) for other teams and convert them to relief. Preference for players with MLB experience. Dakota Hudson was one of my top targets. Other possibilities: Zach Davies, Jakob Junis, Vince Velasquez, Luke Weaver, Julio Teheran, Kolby Allard, Spencer Turnbull, Brad Keller, Yonny Chirinos, Chris Flexen, Jose Urena, Chad Kuhl, Jake Woodford This is where the analytics department needs to earn their paychecks. Figure out which ones will be successful if you give them to Pete Maki.
  7. Good fit for the lineup. They need one more bat and more more top end pitcher. They'll really need a bat if they trade Kepler. Hoskins for a 1 year $15M deal would be a lot better than when they spent $11M on Joey Gallo last year.
  8. I think they need a starter for the top end. They have depth. They need someone like Lopez who has a good chance of outpitching the competition. You brought up Kirilloff and they need a backup plan for him as much as they do for Buxton. Having another 1B/COF bat would be quite helpful. Rhys Hoskins would be such a great fit.
  9. For people under 18 Fortnite is more important than baseball.
  10. Up there with A-Rod to the Rangers
  11. We would probably have another 20-30 additional players from Japan in MLB if there was full freedom of movement between leagues. In a generation we've gone from having our first Hall of Fame level talent from Japan (Ichiro) to having the best baseball player in the world from Japan (Ohtani).
  12. Country, population USA, 334M Mexico, 129M Japan, 124M South Korea, 51M Canada, 40M Colombia, 52M Venezuela, 28M Cuba, 11M Dominican Republic, 11M Panama, 4M Those are the countries where baseball is a major sport. The total population is 784M which gives the USA 43% of the population of baseball playing countries but 74% of the MLB population. We aren't as crazy for baseball as the Dominican Republic but we're producing more than our share of baseball talent. Those stats include Puerto Rico as part of the USA (because it is).
  13. I think the people who are saying trade Polanco aren't usually the same people saying Julien can't play 2B.
  14. I don't think it helps the game on the field to force players who aren't ready onto rosters earlier.
  15. My point is this is not the "big bucks". $8M a year for a decent relief pitcher is the going rate. $15M a year for an average starting position player is the going rate. This isn't "overpaying" it's just "paying". I'm not going to argue that Pagan is the best choice for their bullpen but it's better to go after someone you like than to sit around and wait to see if there is anything left over after everyone else has their pick. I don't expect the Twins to fill their roster with free agents but they should absolutely be looking to supplement and fill holes for this season on the open market. If Cincinnati and Milwaukee can afford it so can the Twins.
  16. Cincinnati is one of the 5 smallest markets in major league baseball.
  17. Waiting 8 months to tell a joke shows commitment to the bit.
  18. I agree. It is still probably the weakest competition of any division in baseball.
  19. After two seasons is usually the sweet spot for negotiating contract extensions. The Twins should make it a priority to give Jhoan Duran a long-term deal this offseason. Ryan and Ober are each controlled until age 31 which lessens the urgency to give them a guaranteed deal. For offensive players a 3 year contract extension with a team option for Jeffers makes sense and Willi Castro might sign a team-friendly extension since he has never really had a big payday.
  20. Kepler and Candelario are roughly equal in value. Candelario is reaching free agency 2 years earlier than Max and wouldn't have even received that deal if it cost a draft pick to acquire him. It proves Max Kepler was close to being worth a QO two seasons ago. Max would be very likely to accept a qualifying offer. I agree that this says Kepler and Polanco are each worth about $15M a season. They're getting paid $10M a season. That's not a lot of surplus value.
  21. Not a good sign when they have a 21 year old repeat rookie ball. Even worse when he doesn't get a whole lot better.
  22. Yes, every other team is overpaying the mediocre players. The Twins are right to not spend money like the big market Cincinnati Reds. Just keep telling yourself this.
  23. Victor Caratini signs for 2 years $12M. That sets a floor for what Vazquez is worth, though I'd rather have Vazquez than Caratini.
