  1. Paige did have very large hands, which helped him spin the ball. Young Satchel Paige was clearly one of the best pitchers ever, though I have trouble believing nobody could ever duplicate his results. Old Satchel Paige was still a remarkably good pitcher for his age but probably wouldn't be able to pitch in today's MLB.
  2. Just based on results Paige might not even be the greatest Negro League pitcher ever (Joe Williams has a very strong argument). The Negro Leagues were a breaking ball (and spitball) league. There were very few pitchers with a great fastball and they all show up in the stats clearly ahead of their peers. Paige was amazing at his peak because of his dominant fastball. He was also injured in 1938 (his age 31 season) and had to completely re-invent himself as a pitcher. That's where all the offspeed pitches came from. Based on radar gun readings, spin rates and strikeout rates we are currently seeing the best pitching in the history of MLB. League average is better than Paige was in his MLB career.
  3. Knuckle ball pitchers aren't known for their strikeouts. They're known for inducing weak contact. There are dozens of Satchel Paige quality pitchers in any given season but very few with Satchel Paige longevity. Greinke might be the closest equivalent. I do think DiMaggio would have had more strikeouts if they hadn't banned Paige from pitching against him for most of his career.

  5. That's how many teams you would need if you ever want to see the Gophers make the playoffs. Even that might not be enough. The NCAA basketball tournament picks 68 teams and the Gophers routinely miss that playoff.
  6. Random thoughts Every one of these deals over the luxury tax increases the amount of money the Dodgers pay out to the rest of the league. The Twins are going to have a higher baseline payout that will more than make up for any drop in local TV revenue. All this spending by the Dodgers and I still think I like the Braves as the favorite in 2024. One thing interesting about this deal - Yamamoto becomes the favorite for Rookie of the Year and that will earn the Dodgers a draft pick bonus in 2025. There is probably at least one entire MLB team worth of talent remaining in Japan.
  7. One thing to remember about Julien's approach is he knows what pitches he can hit. He can't hit the ball pitched inside and off the plate worth a damn and knows he's better off taking that pitch. That led to several strikeouts looking when he didn't get the call from the umpire but the alternative was probably a strikeout swinging at a borderline pitch.
  8. So you want to emphasize changeups instead of sliders? Last season was one of the best Twins pitching staffs I've ever seen but I guess they could throw out what is working and try something else.
  9. He won't be a rookie next season which should help him get better calls from the umpires.
  10. You must have been thrilled watching Carlos Correa ground into double plays last summer.
  11. That is not even close to the same MLB. DiMaggio routinely faced pitchers throwing fastballs in the upper 80s and nobody had a slider above 90MPH.
  12. Yes. The Twins margin for error is very small because they refuse to spend any money on free agency.
  13. I'm all for blaming Calvin Griffith for ruining the relationship with the best player to ever wear a Twins uniform, then being forced to trade him for not much. I don't think that's something to ignore.
  14. On paper, no. But from what I remember Lawton was well liked and nobody liked Rick Reed.
  15. Nettles for Tiant is the worst one on my list, but that's mainly the release of Tiant that makes it so bad.
  16. Donovan Solano told a reporter he wants to come back to the Twins. That could help ease the loss of Polanco.
  17. If Amazon has control over several teams they can change the whole model 1) Sell local ads to people who live locally, no matter which game they're watching. If someone in Idaho is watching Yankees vs Dodgers you can serve them an advertisement for a car dealership in Boise. 2) Sell ads to national advertisers who would like to get their ads in front of anyone watching baseball. Tell Gillette you'll put razor advertising on every baseball game. 3) Amazon could advertise the billions of products they have for sale on their website. Owning eyeballs helps them sell Fire tablets, Amazon Basics products and groceries at Whole Foods. Instead of buying ads on a sports network they're just buying a sports network to advertise on.
  18. Twins Fest is on January 26th. They usually want something to talk about during that weekend. An extension for Lewis, Duran or Jeffers would count as "big news" right now.
  19. I'm not sure he can even catch 40 games a year now. As a RH platoon 1B/DH he's not a great fit for the roster.
  20. Apple can get advertisers for a game between a random 3rd and 5th place team. Prime has 5 times as many subscribers as Apple. Even with all of the access issues MLB games are routinely the highest rated programming throughout the summer. If access is improved I would expect those numbers to increase quite a bit, perhaps as much as 3x in some markets. Ad rates for sports are the highest because people actually watch them in real time. The subscription fees will go down but that business model is on it's death bed (along with many cable subscribers). Advertisers still want to pay a lot of money for ads during MLB games. People want to watch the Twins. The best option for watching a Twins game - MLB.tv - was only available to people who don't live anywhere near Minnesota (unless they broke the law). I heard Bally's is only available in 15% of households in the viewing area. That's pathetic. Make the games easy to access and people will come.
  21. I have heard lots of positives about the MLB.tv app. They already have a path forward for streaming - use MLB.tv. For cable - use the MLB channel plus a couple of alternates.
  22. My preference would be to have all games over the air on one of the alternate broadcast channels (45, 9+, etc). Next best would be a combination of cable and streaming that ends blackouts and makes sure all cable/satellite providers get the games. Bally's still has issues with availability. It's not on Dish Network or Comcast, for example. What is the point of having a "broadcast partner" who can't get the games into people's homes?
