  1. Are they trying to get better or just trying to get cheaper?
  2. There will be a negligible difference between the 25th largest bonus and the 39th largest bonus.
  3. You typically want to put the OBP guys at the top of the lineup to make sure they bat the most often. Often it is the sluggers who are the OBP guys because they're the best at recognizing pitches. If you can recognize pitches well you might as well swing with power and make the most of the at-bat.
  4. Correct. Most humans can't change their approach in a tenth of a second. It's difficult enough to change their strategy between pitches, let alone DURING a pitch. If you're looking to foul off a breaking pitch on the black you aren't going to be able to get out in front of a fastball down the heart of the plate.
  5. The change to limiting your starting pitcher to only go through the lineup twice is what makes a 4-man rotation make more sense. Starting pitchers are not being used the same way they were for decades before. If you're limiting the amount of work the starting pitcher does in any individual game it makes sense to get that same pitcher as many games as possible. Teams don't typically give a 2-inning reliever 4 full days of rest between outings (they really can't or they would run out of pitchers). Why is it necessary to give that much rest to someone limited to pitching 4-5 innings?
  6. I can understand giving pitchers more rest in September to prepare them for the playoffs, but I don't know why that would affect how they are used in June. Do you really want to give your 6th best pitcher more innings at the expense of your best 4 pitchers? That doesn't seem like a winning strategy. Maybe there are too many playoff spots now and it's just too easy to get one.
  7. I would like to see the platoon split on the pitches over the plate. I am guessing he has more trouble recognizing when he is getting a meatball when a lefty throws it.
  8. Billy Beane: It's not that hard, Scott. Tell him Wash. Ron Washington: It's incredibly hard. Billy Beane: Hey, anything worth doing is. And we're gonna teach you. If Julien swings more often at pitches that aren't strikes it will lead to more outs, not fewer.
  9. I don't know why teams want even less work from their best pitchers. Innings totals have been trending down as starters are limited to 5-6 innings per start. Now they're going to wait a week between starts? How much recovery time is needed after pitching 90 pitches in a game? We will have starting pitchers getting paid $40M to pitch 120 innings.
  10. I think you're underrating Royce Lewis but otherwise agree. Julien does have a hole in his swing down and in and off the plate. If he didn't strike out looking on some of those pitches the most likely outcome would be a strike out swinging. Because the pitch is actually a ball I'm in complete agreement with Julien that he shouldn't swing at pitches in that location.
  11. I have to imagine if the Marlins decide to trade Alcanatara that the bidding will exceed the excess value of Jorge Polanco.

  13. This article says 28% of MLB players come from outside of the US. International players on 2023 Opening Day rosters (mlb.com) 104 players from the Dominican Republic (population 11M - same as the state of Georgia) and only 8 from Japan (population 125M). I have said before that there are at least 25 more Japanese players who could contribute in MLB. The number might even be as high as 90 players in Japan who would make an MLB 40-man roster. There were at least a dozen pitchers with better stats than Trevor Bauer (including Yamamoto and Imanaga).
  14. IFA pitchers don't typically get big bonuses but there are a LOT of pitchers in MLB who signed as international free agents. It's actually the cheapest way to acquire pitching if you can find the ones who make it to the majors. Houston has done well at this, the Twins have found almost nobody (Brusdar Graterol, Huascar Ynoa, Fernando Romero).
  15. I hope Barinas can find pitchers. The Twins have been woeful at acquiring pitching through international free agency.
  16. If you look at the trends from year-to-year Helton has gained 0 votes among the same group of voters from last year. Wagner is +5, Beltran +9 and Sheffield +7. Helton has to pick up 11 votes somewhere (he's doing well among 1st time voters and also picked up one who didn't vote in 2023) and Wagner has to pick up 22 more votes to get elected (same as Helton among 1st timers). Last year's votes get split into 3 buckets - public before the election (206), public after the election (115) and private (68) ballots. Helton was 78.6% in public before, 67% in public after and 61.8% in private. Wagner was 72.3% in public before, 69.6% in public after and 52.9% in private. If Wagner is at or below 77% after 200 public ballots he probably won't make it. If Helton is still at 83% after 200 ballots he will have added enough votes just from public ballots to make it. I feel like Mauer will do fairly well among those who don't announce publicly. Torii Hunter and Omar Vizquel were two players who did better on private ballots than on public ballots and neither one has a good case based on analytics.
  17. I checked the noon Dodger game and it looks like the upper deck OF is open but nothing 301-327 or 201-227. Cheapest tickets for that Dodgers game in April are $22 but if you wait until the Tigers series you can get in for $14. You will need to wait until May to sit behind the plate in section 215 or 315. It will look less empty on television for the April games but thousands of seats will be unavailable.
  18. Yes. The past couple years they have had deals for standing room only tickets in April to try to get people into the ballpark. I think people have been getting used to that bargain price and they want to force people to pay more if they want to attend in April.
  19. I like when they rotate the color guy - new stories, new insights. It's hard to come up with new things to say 162 times a summer.
  20. I agree it would be great, but I wouldn't bet my season on a player who struggled in AAA in 2023. Yunior Severino is probably ahead of Miranda in the current depth chart.
  21. The lower bowl should be packed. I'm surprised nobody here has started a discussion about the Twins announcement that they aren't opening up the upper deck until May unless the lower deck sells out. I'm not a fan of artificially reducing supply to make Twins fans pay more for tickets in April. Twins tickets go on sale Wednesday | kare11.com
  22. None of those players should be in their plans (nor should Severino). They each need to earn their way onto the 26 man roster. They're also bad fits for a bench role. Starting Brooks Lee's clock to sit him on the bench and use him as a pinch hitter would be a waste of resources.
  23. My takeaway from that article is the Cubs should be more interested in Matt Chapman. I think people here have identified the Mariners and Blue Jays as good fits.
  24. Solano is a nice veteran bench option who will get playing time if they trade Polanco as expected. With all the LH bats it would be helpful to have a RH pinch hitter option. Miranda is going to have to hit his way back to the majors. He shouldn't be in any plans for the season except as AAA depth.
