  1. Let's see if Ober can be productive this season before we count our chickens.
  2. The simple solution is to keep Polanco and move Julien to 1B. That gets both bats in the lineup.
  3. I keep waiting for the announcement that they have convinced Carlos Correa to waive his no-trade clause and he's being sent to a team with a bigger payroll. That might be next winter to make room for Brooks Lee.
  4. Molina is so underrated he's overrated
  5. I saw MLB rejected the partnership between Diamond Sports and Amazon that would stream games on Prime. I think MLB may have their own plan for what to do with games starting in the 2025 season when they get the rights back from the remaining teams signed to contracts with Diamond Sports. That will make the Twins TV arrangements a short-term deal that only covers 2024.
  6. Are we going to see contract extensions for any of the younger players? Will they wait until everyone has reported to camp to see who shows up healthy first?
  7. dWAR is not measuring defense. If I was a teacher I would redline everywhere you mentioned dWAR and send it back to get revised. It's a common mistake that I see so often that I wish they would stop listing dWAR in their statistics.
  8. Canterino was great but I don't think he ever went through an entire lineup more than twice. He was limited to 4 innings for all but two of those starts. He has a 2-2 lifetime minor league record because he's lasted long enough to get the win twice.
  9. The other part of this is the back end of the Twins bullpen looks pretty lousy. If they were as deep in the bullpen as Atlanta I'd agree, why not try Canterino as a starter. I really don't want to watch Balazovic and Sands cough up leads while Canterino throws his best innings in AAA.
  10. I think Paxton could be a good value starting pitcher. Duvall could be useful. The Twins are waiting out the market until the large market teams have had their pick and will sort through whoever is leftover.
  11. Ober threw 77 and 92 innings in the previous two seasons, averaging 4-2/3 innings per start. Canterino has NEVER thrown 77 innings in a professional season (highest is 37), has averaged 3 innings per start and is ramping up from a baseline of zero. I will bet $100 (pick your charity) that he doesn't pitch 125 innings in 2024.
  12. He's averaged 56 innings per season over the last 7 seasons. That's a real thing.
  13. If they find 2 more starters, absolutely. It is a waste of his time to spend the season in AAA. As-is they'll need him in the Opening Day rotation. They ended up wasting a bunch of Ober's time in AAA last season but he was the 6th starter and it was pretty certain he would eventually get into the rotation.
  14. If Canterino has made 18 starts by July he's probably going to have a dead arm and be worthless the rest of the season. That's all you'll get out of him in 2024. I actually don't think they get 75 innings out of Canterino in 2024. I'd put the over/under around 50. Do you want 10 minor league starts or most of the year in the bullpen?
  15. I'm crazy enough to try Duran in the rotation this year and replace him with Canterino in the bullpen. The difference is Duran has had the ability to develop as a pitcher at the major league level for 2 seasons whereas Canterino would be wasting his healthy innings in the minor leagues.
  16. I don't think Canterino can throw 175 innings in a season (not that anyone else in MLB does that anymore). 75 innings in relief could build up to 125 innings next year in the rotation if you wanted. Prielipp isn't burning options on the 40 man roster but he's also out for the season. I think I would probably fast track him to the bullpen as well. You can't afford to burn years of development time on players who are 26 years old and on the 40 man roster. It's time to use him before he turns 30 and starts declining physically. Are you going to option him twice, have him debut at age 28 and hope his career lasts until he's 34?
  17. 2023 - 0 IP 2022 - 37 IP 2021 - 23 IP 2020 - 0 IP 2019 - 124.1 IP 2018 - 118.1 IP 2017 - 96 IP He's never done it before. I wouldn't let him go more than 3 innings at a time.
  18. I think it would be a huge mistake to have Canterino prepare as a starting pitcher. If they're lucky they'll get about 75 innings out of him in 2024. Don't waste 30 of them having him start in AAA.
  19. Because we haven't hit the end of February yet when a lot of 1 WAR players will sign for league minimum and pull down the average. It's fairly linear down to league average (2.5 WAR) and then gets less so below that because 1 WAR free agents (below average players) are not particularly scarce.
  20. $$/WAR is based on the average but how it is allocated is not linear. It's easy to find 1 WAR projection players who are signing for the league minimum. Players get a premium for elite performance because you can't replace a 7 WAR player with seven 1 WAR players.
  21. How much of Kris Bryant's salary are they willing to pay down for him to play for the Twins? They owe $136M over the next 5 years but I doubt he would get 60% of that in free agency.
