Twins 2024 Position Analysis: First Base
DJL44 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He was also horrible defensively in April and May. They sent him back to AAA for a month and he got better. Buxton was the full-time DH so he had to play a position or go back to AAA.- 80 replies

I am so tired of people bringing up this song when discussing analytics. It's not clever the 5000th time.

Gallo had already fallen off the cliff. They spent $11M to see how high he would bounce at the bottom.

Kirilloff is going to be in the lineup against RHP or there is really no reason to have him on the roster at all. At least one relatively weak batter is going to have to play against RHP. That will be one of Margot (2023 694 OPS vs RHP), Santana (727), Jeffers (828) / Vazquez (547), Farmer (687) or Castro (803). It's going to depend on which regular (Kirilloff, Julien, Buxton, Wallner, Kepler) needs a rest day at DH and where they want to upgrade the defense that day. They have a lot of different options depending on matchups and rest. Note that Jeffers had the best bat against RHP. It will make sense to give him some DH days and start Vazquez for defense against RHP. Also, expect to see a lot of pinch hitting and defensive replacements this season. They have a lot of defensive flexibility on the bench. Rocco is going to use the whole roster in several games.

They're planning accordingly by keeping all of those capable players in AAA. No opening day roster survives more than a couple weeks without a callup due to injuries. 48 different players (27 pitchers) received playing time for the Twins in 2023.

Twins 2024 Position Analysis: First Base
DJL44 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If Castro is in the lineup he should probably be in the field. Most of his value is his ability to play above average defense at many positions. Good time to give a different player a rest day at DH.- 80 replies

Twins 2024 Position Analysis: First Base

He only played 38 games at AAA. He started the season on the roster and hit .222 before getting sent down. After a month he was back, hit .229 in May and got sent back for all of a week. Then he was back to stay. This statement is just revisionist history.- 80 replies

Twins 2024 Position Analysis: First Base
DJL44 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The same thing that happens if Kirilloff stinks again, they lose some games. It's only a bad move if the Twins fail to react to reality and adjust. Yes, it took them forever to adjust to Gallo's disappointing offense last year but they also didn't have many other options to try instead - Miranda was awful, Larnach was bad and Buxton was injured.- 80 replies

None of them individually is more likely to be a contributor than Santana. By the time you figure out which one of them has taken a step forward in production it will be June or July.- 80 replies

Gallo had a terrible track record from the previous year and they signed him to be a starter, not a backup. Not the same.- 80 replies

Twins 2024 Position Analysis: First Base
DJL44 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Because the alternative is Miranda who wasn't hitting OR playing defense worth a damn last year. There is a lot better chance Santana can provide a 750 OPS than Miranda, especially when Miranda is still rehabbing after shoulder surgery at the start of training camp. Plus, Santana can actually play 1B. I don't know why people are concerned about optioning the bench players. They're all veterans who should be able to produce if they're not injured. If they are injured they'll go on the injured list.- 80 replies

The playing time split between Santana and Kirilloff is not determined. The bullpen pecking order is TBD. Castro and Margot will compete for playing time in the outfield.

He is still rehabbing the same shoulder injury post-surgery. Even healthy in 2022 his end result was a 750 OPS. That's a reasonable expectation for Miranda and it isn't anything special for a 1B.- 80 replies

Expanding on that comment, here is your list: All of those guys can defend better than the starting position player they would replace. Against RHP you'll see them rotating through the field with Wallner, Julien, Kirilloff and Kepler sharing the DH spot. Against LHP we could see Jeffers DH.- 80 replies

No roster battles but the pecking order in the bullpen is far from set and we don't know who will play the most at 1B.

Twins 2024 Position Analysis: First Base
DJL44 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Except Miranda was worse than Severino last season while playing for the same team. Miranda had a 686 OPS in AAA and Severino had an 832 OPS at the same level. They will be competing to see who gets called up first this year and I don't think Miranda's two months in 2022 will matter.- 80 replies

It isn't. An 800 OPS is not elite and his platoon split is horrendous.- 80 replies

Twins 2024 Position Analysis: First Base
DJL44 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Future projections weight the previous season the most, then 2 years ago, then 3. Anything outside of the last 3 seasons is mostly irrelevant for projecting the upcoming season. A guide to the projection systems - Beyond the Box Score If you want to talk about what Miranda put up during the pennant race you have to include his August and September where he posted an OPS of .705 and .715 (June/July were his best months). I wouldn't recommend cherry-picking just the best two months of anyone's career and using that as an expectation going forward but if you're going to do that you need to be fair and do that for Kirilloff and Santana as well.- 80 replies

If you have 5 guys with equally mediocre bats to choose from, pick the one who gives you the best defense that day and put him in the field. Most days that's Willi Castro.- 80 replies

This is possible. That would still only be adequate offensive production at 1B. Combine with Santana's glove and it could be a plus.- 80 replies

Uh-oh. Simeon Woods Richardson is Throwing Gas Again.
DJL44 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The fastball was 3 MPH faster so he increased the difference in speed by 1MPH. Plus, a faster changeup probably has more movement.
