  1. I don't have a problem with this. Get the best prospects you can, trade some of the others for a starting pitcher.
  2. Julien has been with the team for a full season now.
  3. The Twins don't control the weather but they are 100% in control of the TV contract.
  4. The Twins have made it clear they want to try to compete with a payroll in the bottom 10. In order to do that they can't afford to allocate $10.5M on a redundant 2B.
  5. The ball breaks less in Colorado due to the thin air. It's a good place for a fastball/changeup pitcher because a slider doesn't slide nearly as well.
  6. Playing in the location where it is most difficult to strike batters out and for the organization that is the least analytical in the major leagues. Remember when Verlander joined the Astros and they unlocked additional velocity and spin? That potential is there. The Rockies are still in the "pitch-to-contact" era.
  7. A lefthanded 4th starter. He had an ERA+ around 100 the last 3 seasons.
  8. Based on this the Twins are going to need to promote him or he will get poached by another organization.
  9. Kyle Freeland
  10. People can make their opinions known about who should be in the Hall of Fame 24/7/365.
  11. He is the worst pitcher on the team at holding runners so singles and walks have the potential to turn into doubles with a runner in scoring position.
  12. "We have received some complaints from our season ticket holders about being forced to interact with the working class. We decided to put the blue-collar folks in the outfield away from our suites to reduce these interactions. We may even make them use a separate entrance to enhance the experience for the fans we really care about. Plus, we get to cut some jobs which makes the Pohlad family happy."
  13. Snell should beat Rodon's guarantee which is $60M and 2 more years than Castillo. If the Mariners decide to trade Castillo there will be a bidding war that the Twins are unlikely to win.
  14. I'd actually be thrilled if Wallner matched Gallo's performance from ages 25-28 when he was a two time All-Star. We'll have to wait 5 years to compare him to current-day Sano or Gallo.
  15. Here's where I disagree. I think Julien has already passed up Polanco on the depth chart and right now Polanco is a $10.5M backup 2B in decline. They need to find him a new home before he gets injured again and is untradeable at the deadline. The Twins do NOT have 5 starters better than DeSclafini right now, which is the main problem they need to solve. I'm not certain they have 4 starters better than DeSclafini; Chris Paddack has a pretty sketchy performance record. I'd rather the Twins give a contract to James Paxton and trade Polanco just for prospects but they may need to take salary back to get a deal done with Seattle.
  16. They are just MLB depth which is why Seattle would need to add prospects to the deal if they want to deal their depth for the Twins starter.
  17. Looking over the rosters as part of this trade sparks ideas for further deals. WAR projections are from Fangraphs. Twins trade: Jorge Polanco ($10.5M 2.5 WAR); Mariners trade Anthony DeSclafini ($12M 0.5), Luis Urias ($4.7M 2.0) and Walter Ford (RHP, #19 prospect). Seattle upgrades at 2B and saves $6M. The Twins get a starting pitcher on a short-term market value deal, a good pitching prospect and a utility infielder with two years of team control which allows them to make the next deal. Twins trade: Kyle Farmer ($6.6M 0.4); Giants trade Heliot Ramos ($0.75 0.1) and Joe Whitman (LHP, #14 prospect) The Giants need a SS more than any team in baseball and have too many outfielders. The Twins get a backup CF option who crushed AAA in 2023 and the kind of projectable college pitching prospect they love. Plus, they shed the money they added in the Mariners deal. Feel free to rotate in any of the other dozen Giants pitching prospects if you think Whitman is the wrong guy. This doesn't land the Twins a top of the rotation starter but it adds a couple pitching prospects that could help them swing that deal later. It also finishes out their shopping list for everything else except the top starting pitcher.
  18. They traded Ray but got DeSclafini in return. Deeper since DeSclafini can pitch the whole season while Ray was out until July.
  19. Josh Rojas posted a bWAR of 0.5 in 2023. He projects to 1.5 WAR in 2024 (over a full season). He's a bench player. Urias may be the projected starter at 3B but he lost his job in 2023 in Milwaukee and ended up hitting .194 for the season. The Mariners just took on Mitch Haniger's dead weight contract. They're not pinching pennies in 2024.
  20. They got an arm back for Ray (who will be available for the whole season) in DeSclafini. They are deeper now. I hope they would trade Woo, Miller or Hancock for Polanco. I hope it's not Polanco for DeSclafini.
  21. It's a gamble worth taking for the Giants. Haniger and DeSclafini didn't contribute much last year. Addition by subtraction and a possible stud pitcher in return.
  22. Caballero is gone now. Rojas and Urias can platoon at 3B. DeSclafini in the Mariner rotation adds even more pitching depth. 2B is wide open for Polanco in Seattle.
  23. Also, Jose Caballero sent from Seattle to Tampa Bay for Luke Raley. These moves make Kepler to SEA less likely and Polanco to SEA more likely.
  24. Kepler and Polanco are not signed for the next 6 seasons. That's what it will take to get Montgomery at $25M annually. If the Twins can get pitching in return for Kepler and Polanco then it makes some sense to add bats through free agency. The prices are better for free agent hitters than for free agent pitchers.
  25. I heard a good radio interview with Wallner that illustrates this. He was describing his game preparation and said he would take 15-20 pitches from the machine with it set to fastballs, then switch to breaking balls, etc. Provus asked him if he switches things up to randomly go between fastballs and sliders and Wallner's response was (paraphrased) "No, it's already hard enough to hit without doing that".
