Twins Relievers Are Pitching Out of Their Minds
DJL44 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The trade for Okert has been helpful. Thielbar has missed time and Okert has shut down LH hitters. With multiple LH relievers they can afford to matchup more than once in a game if needed. Sands has improved. Alcala has been healthy. Staumont has been healthy and effective. I think there's even some upside if they finally move Varland to the bullpen permanently. -
I would trade both Festa and Raya to get a quality starting pitcher with multiple years of team control. The pitcher with the most helium is Zebby Mathews, I'm sure teams would ask for him.

If the Twins trade for Luzardo that will probably remove Woods Richardson from the rotation and he's been one of the best starting pitchers on the team. I don't see them trading for pitching unless someone has a severe injury.

Just for context, MLB average is .240/.311/,387 for an OPS below 700. Most league average hitters will have a month-long stretch this season where they hit 30 points above or below that.

It's also important to calibrate expectations to a season where the league is hitting .240 - the lowest league batting average since 1968 - the year of the pitcher. If Julien strikes out less he's probably also going to walk less and his OBP is still solid even with his recent struggles.

They have a player named Nes Cafe? I wouldn't be surprised if he had a cup of coffee someday.

Not sure, but more likely than not and if they're better it probably won't be that much better.

And the catchers pile up at the bottom of that list. Out of catchers with 50 or more plate appearances he's 55th of 59 in fWAR because he's 9th in defense. That's not good but 60 catchers are guaranteed MLB roster spots. If you cut Vazquez you are more likely than not to end up with a player worse than Vazquez.

Castro has a lot more experience at 2B and will play it better than Royce. Lewis is much a better fielder at 3B than Miranda. Playing Lewis at 3B and Castro at 2B gives you your best defensive alignment.

Kirilloff reminds me of Randy Bush. Teams carried a larger bench and smaller bullpen in the 1980s than they do now. It is a lot harder for a Randy Bush type player to carve out a career now. The Twins are going to tender him a contract this winter because they're going to let Kepler walk.

Farmer does have a role as a late inning defensive replacement with Castro moving to the OF.

Larnach should be the starting LF. Castro is the everyday 2B.

Keeping Kyle Farmer is basically acknowledging that Brooks Lee still needs to develop in the minors for at least a couple of months. The other infielders in AAA (Castillo, Helman, Prato, Severino) are pretty bad, not players you want to promote to the big leagues if there is another infield injury.

He can come in and catch an inning if they pinch hit for Vazquez. That's not a compelling reason but it's something.

So, who will be sent down/released to make room for Lewis?
DJL44 replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Wallner had a hot week but the Saints had little trouble scoring against Rochester (48 runs in 7 games). That's bad pitching. In the past month Wallner is only hitting .180 against AAA pitching. He needs to take his production this week and extend it for a whole month before I would think about bringing him back.- 56 replies

I don't think Julien will be in AAA long but I'm also not sure he can work on what he needs to improve in AAA. I don't know if the AAA pitchers will use the same strategy to try to get him out because I'm not sure how many of them actually have the command to be successful using that strategy. I do hope Julien plays against every LHP in AAA to try to improve that weakness.

Astros 5, Twins 2: Houston Lifts Off Against Ryan

Yes, even if they continue the every other day starting catcher rotation they could pinch hit Jeffers for Vazquez late in the games.- 29 replies

Camargo just came off the injured list. The other AAA catchers are hitting .193 and .194 and they're both worse defenders than Vazquez. You have to go down to A-ball to find a Twins minor league catcher who is hitting well.- 29 replies

Willi Castro May Be Twins Latest, Greatest Come Up
DJL44 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
https://thedecisionlab.com/biases/loss-aversion Even if the Twins had evenly lost and gained players it would "feel" like they had lost more. You have to gain at a 2-1 ratio to make it "feel" even.- 19 replies
