    We don’t know what the alternative prospects offered were. I think it’s highly likely one of the glut of outfield prospects were offered. I’d rather have Graterol than lose too much on a trade for Maeda. I like Maeda, but not at the cost of two top ten pitching prospects. Part of this is the state of the Twins rotation. In the zombie apocalypse, always leave a bullet in the mag to do yourself in before the horde can overtake you. They’re going to have to make more moves. Giving up too much value for Maeda now means not being able to make another trade later.

    I’m really excited for Maeda for Graterol as a fair trade. I don’t care about Dodgers and Sox part and the Twins shouldn’t have to pay more to facilitate that trade. If the Dodgers aren’t willing to pay more for Betts and Price the Twins shouldn’t foot that bill.

    According to Feinsand, Twins could be in talks with the Dodgers for Maeda independent of Boston.     Can the Twins really afford to let Graterol mature in AA and AAA for 1-2 more seasons? They are in win now mode and still only had Pineda and Berrios under contract for 2021. They needed a mid-rotation or better starter. Boston needed another pitching prospect not too far from the majors. Boston can afford to let Graterol build his endurance in the minors for a couple years. Twins could do that, but it wouldn’t necessarily fill their hole in the rotation for 2021, let alone 2020. Seems like each of the three teams got what they needed out of the trade.

    I really like Graterol, but Maeda is a very good starter to get back. At first blush, I like this move but it is in no way a “fleecing” in the Twins favor. Seems like a fair trade.

    I reinvest my dividends on my employee discounted shares. Man that grew well and is readily accessible as a medium term savings (rather than a long term account like my 401k, Roth, and IRA for retirement). I save for target purchases like a car or home renovations. Getting 10% return on investment in share growth plus the compounding of dividends gets me an extra share per quarter plus the 15% discount means I get a huge premium over a 2% savings account and even greater savings over a home equity or car loan. Just need to sell enough shares to cover my purchase plus capital gains tax. To top it all off, because it’s an employee plan, I can increase my savings rate 1% per year and not even feel it. So if you work for a publicly traded company, take advantage of your benefits!

    TLDNR Jk I skimmed a bit though.... is the three batter or complete the half inning minimum an impact to your very thoughtful post? From what I’ve heard, the 4th rotation spot is Thorpe’s for the taking. This would color Chacin as Homer Bailey insurance. To simplify things a bit and even out the workload, 13 pitchers and a 3 batter rule would lend itself well to a 4 out opener for the 5th rotation spot (and the 3rd until Pineda returns). That would give you a long man, 5 setup men, a closer and an opener.

    sure, even into 2021, there could be some volatility with significant and growing populations unable to participate in markets. There was significant volatility with SARS too. The markets rebounded.

    per play, sure.... increased endurance can improve performance via improved ability to practice over longer periods more frequently. I’m with you though, cheating increases WPA immensely

    Make the trade as soon as the opportunity develops. Timing is rarely perfect, and waiting for the trade deadline for a strategic motive is a high risk low reward type of move. The rotation as currently setup is a recipe to blow out the bullpen and make another quick exit in the post season. Berrios is very good 2, good 1 Odorizzi is a good 2, very good 3 Pineda is out the first 39 games and then has to get up to speed. Lots of risk, hard to judge... could be their best starter down the stretch. Hill is just as likely not to pitch as pitch 75 innings Homer Bailey is a fine to be in the mix for 5th starter with Dobnak and Smeltzer but I hope he’s in the bullpen. The Twins desperately need a starter to slot in the top 3 right now. Injuries and ineffectiveness will sort out any perceived over abundance of pitching.

    you are correct, the Twins do need starts for development purposes. Pineda is out 39 games, Rich Hill is just as likely to throw zero innings as 75. Even if the Twins do add a starter, one of Graterol, Dobnak, et al, will be the 5th starter all season and Pineda provides another 7 or so starts. There’s 32-37 starts already and someone will get hurt... You don’t need to worry about putting Bailey in the pen to get those young guys starts. God willing, Dobnak or Thorpe pushes Bailey to the pen!

    right, every team wants to add another quality proven young starter. That’s why the free agent market for Cole was 9 years 324 mil.... Now that trade is the only option, it’s going to cost significant trade assets to out bid other teams. The cost of poor forecasting....

    agreed, tons of back end depth for 20, but very thin at the top of the rotation. Injuries will happen and having all that depth for starters 4-10 is great! It raises the floor. Having a solid chance win the 5th game as opposed to an automatic L is how you win the regular season. Need to add a starter to the 1-3 range (preferably 1, but understand the difficulty/cost) to raise the ceiling. Having a 3rd high-end starter is how you win in the post season.
