    If I'm ranking biggest problems: 1. Ownership. It's no accident that the team's 30 year run of ineptitude has coincided with the Pohlad sons and now grandsons running the show. Call it the franchise's Corporate Era. 2. Front office. These guys are clearly in way, way over their head. Is Derek Falvey really one of the 30 best performers at his job on the planet? A smart but inexperienced leader would surround themselves with people who've done it before with success; Falvine surround themselves with young, inexperienced yes men like Baldelli and Popkins. 3. Correa. He needs to eat a steady diet of humble pie, and he needs to focus less on being the legendary leader/honorary GM he has anointed himself to be, and more on being a better baseball player. 4. Buxton. His performance is actively hurting the team. 5. Coaching staff. If they aren't part of the problem then coaches/managers truly are meaningless.

    You're probably right, though I think there's something to be said about the optics of holding someone accountable for poor performance. Among many other issues this team seems way to comfortable with losing. But let's be real, if Popkins does get canned he'll just be replaced by Popkins 2.0: a young, cheap, inexperienced diamond in the rough who the FO will mold into a genius and who will uncritically carry out the FO's grip-it-and-rip-it philosophy.

    Don't think it was intended this way, but one would be hard pressed to find a more damning sentiment about the state of this franchise 6 years into the Falvine era.

    I believe the technical term for "low leverage reliever" is "bad reliever."

    He's been the worst reliever in baseball for 4 years. His ERA this year when entering with the lead is still hovering around 15 I believe. His HR rate is the worst in the history of baseball. It's not possible to "hide" him (or any pitcher) in the bullpen, especially this bullpen - he's going to have to pitch in higher leverage situations at some point. The minor leagues are littered with guys who can eat innings when the team is down 5 runs, at a much cheaper cost. This isn't complicated.

    Not disagreeing with anything here, but I do think the lack of clarity also doesn't do Buxton any favors as some of the less-than-good-faith fans turn that into "he's soft" or "not a gamer" etc. Plus, if he's so injured that he can't consistently produce at the plate he's going to be criticized for the lack of performance which can't help his mindset either. Just a tough situation all around.

    I tend to agree with @chpettit19 that nothing Rocco says is especially meaningful. However I am very interested to hear what the FO thinks about how this season has played out, how their trades have turned out, whether the new trainer is in any way better than the one they fired, if they still believe the bullpen "isn't a priority", why Pagan and Kepler are on the team, what concrete steps the organization is taking to turn this around, etc. I continue to fear the FO is just deluding themselves into believing "it'll turn" and if so, it's a much bigger problem than Rocco's pressers.

    This is what happens when you prioritize process over results. I am not at all convinced Falvine think there is a problem here, just like they didn't think there was a problem last year (blaming it on injuries/trainer, publicly stating that the bullpen wasn't a priority, etc). That's really the only explanation for not changing anything.

    I'd love someone in the media to ask Falvine (if Falvine can be found) why the injuries have not improved under the new trainer.

    Toronto lost a game by trotting out the worst reliever in MLB over the past 4 years who has a 15.5 ERA this season when entering with a lead and has singlehandedly lost the team like 10 games in 1.5 years, yet somehow remains on the roster because the FO would rather lose games than admit that they were wrong to sign the worst reliever in MLB? The odds of that happening in back to back games with different teams must have been astronomical.

    The "Ks don't matter" thing is a perfect illustration of the fallacy behind extreme analytics: it relies on the idea that players are Strat-o-Matic robots who are preordained a certain amount of outs every year. Ipso facto, it doesn't matter what kind of outs they are, they're gonna happen regardless. But this is just flat wrong. Baseball is a sport played by humans, and hitting happens one at bat at a time. Each at bat is going to have one of 3 outcomes: walk (or hbp); put the ball in play; or K. K is the worst outcome on the whole, and it's not even close. (Yes, things like GIDP can happen when you put the ball in play. These are far more rare than balls in play becoming hits though. And the Twins have 10x the K outs vs the GIDP outs.) Strikeouts matter, they always have, and they always will.

    I continue to believe the simplest explanation for the strikeouts is that Popkins is teaching exactly what the FO wants him to teach, and the players are doing exactly as they are being taught. FO has 1 offensive philosophy: grip it n rip it. As a hitting coach Popkins is tasked not with teaching professional at bats and fundamental baseball, but only things like launch angle and exit velocity (probably accompanied by an overwhelming amount of data and video). There's a reason the FO hires young, hungry, inexperienced guys with little to no MLB equity like Rocco and Popkins: they want to be able dictate everything without question. Which is why firing Popkins or Rocco won't matter, Falvine will just replace them with clones who will carry out their extreme analytics agenda with a nod and a smile.

    I don't think I've heard this rumor, can you expand on this? Why would they do that?

    The thing is, there are no analytics that tell you not to hustle or play fundamentals. The "modern" thinking is based on fundamental misunderstanding of statistics. Just because the numbers tell you bunting is not the best way to score piles of runs over the long haul doesn't mean you should never bunt (sometimes 1 run is all you need!). Just because the numbers tell you home runs are the most efficient way to score doesn't mean you should ignore all other baseball skills (defense, contact, baserunning) and only focus on power. Just because double plays are unfortunate doesn't mean that strikeouts are totally fine. Just because process is important doesn't make process more important than results. It's just so frustrating to watch game after game of "it aint working" and seeing literally nothing change.

    Is this for real? If so, why is Kepler still on this team? Players deciding where they want to play. One player anointing himself GM and deciding Buxton's a full time DH now. This organization is broken. I continue to be extremely concerned that the longer we hang on to this FO and manager, the longer it is going to take to repair the damage done.

    Fair enough I guess. Though is the distinction all that meaningful? St Peter is the CEO, which I'm guessing makes him Falvine's boss.

    It's what happens with extreme analytics - process is more important than results. Look at their moves after the last 2 years. After the 2021 debacle they extend Baldelli - results don't matter. After the 2022 debacle they resign Pagan and fire the trainer - results don't matter, and anyways it was all the injuries' fault. Oh and the fans' fault - never forget that the FO blamed the fans for last September's meltdown. It's going to take the organization years to dig out of this mess.

    Someone in the local media should ask Falvey about this. Haven't heard much from Falvey lately though - I wonder why.
