I think what’s inexcusable is when Baldelli pinch hit Lewis late in the game and then Lewis had the audacity to strike out - what terrible managing!

In what world does anyone on TD support bringing in Richards for Alcala in the midst of a jam? You “don’t care how many pitches were thrown….” - then you’re not watching in reality. 4 pitches to 3 batters (impossible to replace him at that point, unless you have a Genie in a Bottle) - nice to say after the guy gives up 2 HR & 3 more runs from a couch. He got an out with Seager on 2nd ……..apparently gaining some composure and able to pitch to his capabilities……no reason to think otherwise. The guy has been lights out nearly all year! Players screw up - it happens.

It’s got nothing to do with needing a fresh inning……when the 7th started the Team needed 9 more outs. Also, Alcala had a 2.15 ERA. He threw 4 pitches and there were 2 runs in, and a guy standing on 2nd. 4 pitches. Things couldn’t get any worse……he got the next guy & then HE, not Baldelli, gave up a middle-middle pitch to guy for a HR. Now there’s one out and nobody on…..he’s thrown maybe 10 pitches……should be able to get 2 outs! He gets one and then HE serves up another HR. The professional athletes need to get it done…..it’s difficult to achieve what Alcala did - hard to be that bad. 2.15 ERA entering the inning.

Can’t believe that anybody would try to put ALCALA’s complete failure to do his job on Baldelli. After 4 pitches there were 2 runs in and a guy standing on 2nd. The 20/20 hindsight is out of control. What did your crystal ball tell you was to happen in the 8th & 9th after Jax pitched a perfect 7th? Just because there’s 6 other ways to approach a situation it doesn’t mean that what was done was in any way a mistake! The Manager did exactly what has been a formula for numerous wins……..Alcala was not focused, period.

The guy threw 4 pitches to his required 3 batters and two runs were in with a guy on 2nd. His ERA is/was 2.15 entering the 7th inning. What’s the Manager supposed to do? Is he supposed to show zero composure? Is he supposed to get somebody loose when Alcala takes the mound with a 4 run lead? ALCALA is 110% at fault - Baldelli isn’t throwing letter high change-ups to Cory Seager nor center cut fastballs to other guys………,should Baldelli throw his hat and start swearing? He’s the Manager of 26 grown men and he’s not a fan. Not really sure what your expectations are of what his behavior should be? Other than a complete lack of offense after the 3rd inning, Alcala blew the game all on his own!

Can’t be too cocky - pretty sure that after 2 deep starts his ERA is sub 2.00? Just hoping for a W.

The reasoning with Varland having remained a starter through the year is due to necessity. Matthews has ONE MLB start. Varland has pitched, as a starter, in parts of 3 MLB seasons. There are 3 Rookies in our current rotation…..that was never the Plan. There’s nobody else that makes any sense as any sort of depth for the current rotation. One of them gets a blister, a sore shoulder, fatigue…….the games keep happening every day. Varland will remain in line and ready as a starter until September 15-20, at which point the Team will have to get him Pen ready and assume they will finish the last two weeks w/o any problems.

Kepler’s double to get Santana to 3B & then Farmer’s sac fly created a nice cushion. Bullpen came up big with Jax & Duran off for the night. Ronny Henriquez!! Castro keeps up his steady play - not always flashy but he helps the Team win games day in & day out. Last night it was the big play in the 9th from the hole at SS & tonight a 2 RBI single…….he’s really been a key piece. Didn’t get to see Festa pitch but it appears he was solid enough for 5 innings. A sweep would be a nice shot of momentum going into next week!

SWR is 23…….3.78 ERA after 100 innings and twenty starts. He’s currently the most valuable. Does he have the best stuff? No. He’s got experience and is gritty. Festa may have the best potential - not arguing that! Matthews is just too untested - he could be the best ultimately. His propensity to come into the zone with his fastball nearly always may become too predictable…….you do have to like his confidence and determination to make guys earn their way on base. I don’t think Varland has the mental composure to be an effective starter - at least not as much composure/effectiveness he may have as a guy trying to get 3-6 out from the Pen.

It’s easy to critique if the only thought is the game that day……they got the win, that’s great! Problem Baldelli (mgrs) has is he is responsible for the next game & the game after that, etc. Can’t always have your foot on the accelerator to win today and everything else be damned. Pen isn’t looking too good for today’s game relative to availability……hoping Festa can at least get 5 innings plus and then cross our fingers. Sands was a bit shaky and then missing 1B - that made things a bit more tense than needed. Overall, Pen was really good again.

Guys were making leaping catches in LF - 2 balls hit 400 ft that were outs. Sands stumbled past 1B to give them a free AB. Okert K’s Seager. Tying run gets to 2B in bottom of 9th. Castro comes in, in the 9th to play SS and he makes a fantastic play in the hole for 2nd out. Duran pitches on 3rd consecutive day. Very fortunate!

Somewhat agree - however, if he’s got 12 Wins now and 9 starts left …..8 more Wins would mean way more than any other associated stats!!

There was some buzz yesterday about Texas waiving a bunch of arms……I was excited about 1 guy (didn’t see it happening) for the Twins to try & jump upon. K. Yates….,,after 2 walks & a Wild Potch last night in the 9th….I think we’re good! Grass is always greener with the NEW guy.

Make sure you don’t cross SWR up with Richards, there will be an uprising. I think you are right about the fact that at this point, they have decent young depth, even after guys going down with injuries. Lopez will remain at the Top of the rotation until he stumbles in real meaningful Playoff game……IMO.

Jeffers isn’t a great option for long-term to me. I don’t dislike him by any means but over the last 3 months, other than he looks good in the uniform, he’s not done a lot on either side of the ball. His defense, outside of framing metrics isn’t great. The framing metric is a bit subjective and not a perfect way to evaluate - another data point. Blocking balls - throwing guys out….,,he’s not really good at any of these things. Framing was never analyzed the way it is today with databases …….however, getting your pitcher’s a call with subtlety has been around since I started watching baseball in late 60’s and probably well before. The pitchers being different than they were 2-3 years ago is silly - Vazquez is 7th & Jeffers somewhere around 75th in framing under same circumstances. Jeffers needs to pick up his game …..,IMO, he should got to the plate with a 2 strike mentality - choking up and trying to make contact. He’s string enough to hit HR’s without big swings - more along the Miranda approach and his offense would benefit, again IMO.

To me, that OF that can hit LH pitching and not look bad against RH pitching is Willi Castro……….Could be Royce Lewis as well. Gotta assume Lee will play on the dirt for the Twins on a regular basis in ‘25. 3B or 2B? Keaschall - Julien - Martin …..or somebody new at 2B? Margot, if he played less and was used more as a straight platoon guy he wouldn’t be so beat up here on TD. Problem is other circumstances have forced Team to use him a bunch. Buxton hurt early - Kepler hurt early - Larnach hurt early - Correa out 2 different times - Lewis hurt a bunch - Wallner couldn’t hit - Julien couldn’t hit……the infielder issues pulled Castro out of the Outfield. The Outfield issues forced Margot to play more & more. They didn’t sign him with the expectation he’d have 3rd most games played……,he was to be a depth bat and a platoon v. lefties.

Can’t really think there’s quality from the waiver wire in August……Winder - Henriquez - Blewett all seem to be prime candidates to displace them……Richards & Thielbar. Can’t imagine Caleb is going anywhere…….maybe a Varland/Paddack combination forces him off roster?

Winder should be back in a week as well - 4 appearances with a 3.00 ERA & .888 WHIP & 10/1 K’s to walks ratio.

Lewis fits in a lot better mixed amongst Miranda/Correa/Buxton …..guys (Managers) don’t want him to beat them and he’s getting pitched accordingly. Can’t hit 15 HR in 40 games and not have other Teams notice.

I know he can play 1B - don’t think anyone disagrees with that premise. He’s in the line-up either corner spot he plays - how is offense lost? Nobody gets points on the scoreboard because a certain defensive position has a better hitter than the opponents. That said, 1B is typically a spot for a power bat - (Royce) and a spot for a guy that you don’t want to risk at another spot, in Lewis’ case, not because he’s a poor player but because their trying to keep him as healthy as possible. Theoretically we don’t have enough offense at 1B now. Lee is a better 3B & will remain so even after Royce “works on his defense there”. Lee is supposed to be a regular on the club with great upside. There are 4 other guys that can play 2B in the organization, at a minimum. Some think they may sign Santana again - love what Carlos has done in ‘24 and have been behind him all year. Don’t want to see him playing 1B again at age 39.
-
Sorry - can’t read al 76 submissions….. got through page 1, maybe duplication here? I have been a proponent of him playing LF or 1B since Lee got to AAA. I didn’t know Julien was going to disappear though. 2B is too risky for Royce even with the protective rules now in place. His legs don’t need any unnecessary torque. 3B should be manned by LEE……he looks fantastic there. LF - Greg Luzinski played LF ……Killebrew played LF ……Royce can play LF and not get hurt - if he and his mgmt team are going to push back big time, he should go to 1B. Why are people here dismayed by him playing there? Lee at 3B - Julien/Martin /Castro/Keaschall are all possibilities at 2B …..Lee doesn’t NEED to play 2B! Power hitting Royce Lewis at 1B for the next 13-15 years ……solid defender. What’s the rub? He’s a more athletic & way better hitter than Rhys Hoskins…..and everyone here was upset Twins didn’t sign him. He has 20HR and a WAR of zero in mid-August because he doesn’t play defense much and hits .230. Miranda can DH - spell Lee at 3B - spell Lewis at 1B. Castro and Larnach (DH) can play LF - Wallner in RF. Castro is essentially the RH OF free agent we all keep pushing for …... Lewis is the solution at 1B.

Varland & Festa are #5 & #4 respectively. That’s our rotation …… gotta get used to it……Matthews didn’t get sent down this morning so he’s going to factor in again very soon……if Louie slips up Matthews may immediately be positioned at #5? They may go piggyback in another 5 days? Varland to the Pen after today, with a decent start, is a big stretch!! Louie has 3 separate years in MLB with 20 plus starts…….seems he’ll get the benefit of the doubt, IMO.
