    Kingman's career OPS was 780. Carew's was 822. Carew was definitely better. Fielding and base running also factor in to a player's value. Nobody would pick Kingman over Carew in either of those categories, either.

    Lately, I have been seeing lineups posted with OPS instead of BA. I like that along with RISP to get an idea of how effective a batter is at the plate.

    Until RF becomes a position that values defense (C, CF, SS) over offense, I believe Kepler is, at best, limited in his value. The Twins seem to have a problem producing runs which is usually the job of the guys on the corners (infield and outfield).

    At one point the Twins had Encarcion-Strand, Steer, Miranda, and Julien in the minors. There's no room for that much fumble-handedness on a ball field. Something had to give.

    I know I'm in the minority, but it's better to trade a guy too early than it is to trade him too late. I think they have 2 or 3 young prospects to hold down 2nd base. Therefore I think trading Polanco now for a good haul would be a smart move (before his leg and ankle problems resurface). I am a huge Miranda fan, but, yes, they have to figure out how to get his bat going or he has little value. Has anyone else questioned whether they need to get his vision checked? I am probably wrong, but sometimes he looks like people I know with ill fitting contacts.

    I'm all for robo-umping, but, you know how inconvenient it gets when a simple computer develops a "glitch"? What could possibly go wrong with a database that size?

    I read (or heard) the lower limit will be set at 27% of a batters height. It made me wonder if they'll have to work up a bio on every player. Talk about an unwieldy database. I can see guys trying to get measured with "elevator" shoes, etc.

    It'll feel strange seeing Arreaz on the National League All Star team.

    With Larnach finally healthy (and hitting like we all hoped he would), and CF manned by Buxton and Taylor, Kepler only has until Kiriloff is ready (if it ever happens. Knowing Kirk Gibson had the same procedure give me faith) before he becomes the odd man out. Gallo is a better choice in RF, having actually won a Gold Glove there and posting a career OPS a full 50 points higher than Kepler. I believe Max will soon become someone else's problem.

    "I think the Twins will be out of it at the deadline" What!? You know Spring is the season of hope, right?

    If you're doubting that Kiriloff can come back after that "bone shortening" surgery, check out Kirk Gibson's history. I can't remember the exact number, but he smacked a lot of baseballs out of the park after the same surgery. I choose to be optimistic. Man, I am glad baseball is back. Oh, and I love the pitch clock.

    Any season that they don't have to rely on someone like Jake Cave should be good fun. I'm happy about all the depth on the 40 man, but I think their catching in the minors could be stronger. They have a couple of years to work on that. My hope rises every Spring. I'm getting excited!

    I like your thinking, but, as far as a trade, couldn't it be a package of both?

    The way Rocco burned through his relievers last season, says, to me anyway, that they will take 13 pitchers north. I still think a trade for Kepler is coming. In fact, I think it might be that they are looking at the glut of infielders (Lewis, Lee, Julien, and Martin) who are close, and are talking to teams about Polanco thinking to get something good for him before his knee/ankle finally gives out. Now, I'm like most of you and would hate to see him go, but I wonder what they could get for a package of Kepler and Polanco. I'm thinking Polanco instead of Miranda because of the youth factor.

    I'm not a died-in-the-wool analytics type, but one stat I like is RISP. I hope my impression is wrong, but it didn't "feel" like many of the Twins did real well in those situations

    When we have to depend on a "Jake Cave type", the season is lost.

    "The Twin's Way" is a good way to maximize the contributions of guys like Celestino, but it shouldn't have to be taught in the Majors. If a guy comes up without knowing how to bunt, which base to throw to, etc., the minor league coaches and managers (The ones who should be teaching) need to be held accountable. That being said, I don't ever want to see guys like Nelson Cruz concentrating on hitting behind the runner, or bunting, for that matter.
