  1. Nor the extra years of control.
  2. He better get enough time to actually get better at first (or not and we find out). Santana will not be here next year so we need to consider that. I have no interest is seeing AK in the outfield. He is not good out there.
  3. I was thinking the same thing. It will also be one of the more interesting story lines this year. No clue what to predict for Max in 2024.
  4. I would wait on DeSclafini for about 2 seconds. Start the season with Varland and deal with DeSclafani when he is healthy and pitching effectively.
  5. I did a back of the napkin calculation a while back and posted it. Came out about the same. 6-7% of any group of minor leaguers will make it. The number is much smaller than most people realize which is evidenced by people posting unrealistic prospect outcomes which I have snarkily named prospect puppy love. Anyway very interesting info and topic. Thanks for doing it.
  6. I was going to post on this topic as well when I saw the Giolito news. It used to frustrate me that the Twins refuse to spend bigger money on starters. I was wrong and they are right. They take it one more level which is rarely using higher draft picks on pitchers. This concept I’m not so sure about. Their track record on drafting pitchers and getting them to the big leagues isn’t good yet they have put together really good starting staffs recently by trading prospects. I guess you could say a higher drafted position player used to get a pitcher may be the same as drafting that pitcher but with better info?
  7. Agreed mostly. My view is when you have someone that has a chance to be great at a position you put them there and work around the others. For example Julien: if I’m the FO he is going to fit wherever he can or DH. His defensive profile is such that to have anyone play at a lesser position to keep him at second doesn’t make sense to me. Royce has such a good attitude that I’m sure he will play where they need him and he is one of the few players that could be good in a couple different spots. You are spot on that by the time Lee is ready the question might already be answered.
  8. I think he will break camp with the Twins………in 2025. We don’t need him right now so let him get good and ready before we start the service time.
  9. I just want the Twins to put players at their best position so we can be the best fielding club out there. Early scouting reports on Lee indicated he didn’t have the lateral quickness to stay at SS. However they felt that due to his soft hands and strong arm he could be an elite 3rd baseman. So let him play 3rd and move Lewis to second. He is so athletic he will be great there. As referenced above by Bean too often defensive flexibility is another way of saying I can be sub par at three different positions. I want defense to be a bigger priority but I don’t think the FO agrees with me on that one based on the type of player they draft / acquire.
  10. This is my view as well. Alcala has gotten a lot of love from TD for a guy that has never really performed. He had a good two month stretch a few years ago but hasn’t been good the rest of the time. And you are correct - lefties eat him up. But hope springs eternal - would surely be nice to get something from the Pressly deal.
  11. I know it’s not what we like to hear as fans but TK had it right. You don’t know what you have until they have 1000-1500 at bats. The spectrum of possible results for Wallner is really wide - literally all star to bust and everything in between. I will predict that if he gets regular playing time in right fielder he will be a more than adequate fielder.
  12. Huge hat tip to Jax. When he came up as a starter I thought there was no hope he could ever stick in the show much less end up damn good. I really give him credit because his first taste of success in the pen was almost completely based on his excellent slider. He knew that wouldn’t last long term and turned a very mediocre fastball into a weapon. Don’t let a failed starter go without giving them a shot in the bullpen.
  13. I think all of the stated opinions are plausible. AK has shown signs of being an elite hitter and then not. Due to his injuries it’s really difficult to get a read on that. It’s an important factor because he is showing to be a player without much defensive value. I’m holding out hope he will get better at first - many scouts thought he had the tools to be a fine first baseman. He is not an outfielder: slow, poor arm and bad routes. The other factor is that we might need a new home for Julien next year. All in all AK has to hit and hit well if he wants to be a first baseman / DH in this league and the clock is ticking.
  14. I think Kiriloff is done as an outfielder. Hes not particularly fast, has a mediocre arm and takes bad routes to balls.
  15. Can’t wait to see Royce develop and perform this year. I don’t usually pay much attention to “leadership qualities” as it’s really not possible for fans to really have any insight. Having said that Royce seems special in this regard.
  16. I’m sure that’s what they wanted to do but couldn’t find any takers. That’s why they ended up with the deal they did. Ok deal but didn’t address their highest need. As soon as the payroll budget was decided Polanco was gone.
  17. No not sure. Wrong words. Let me rephrase. The concept I liked better was trading Julien plus prospects to get a playoff caliber starter. That was never in play because Polanco had to be moved as a salary dump.
  18. Especially for a team that has legit playoff aspirations. It’s one thing to roll the dice on a young player if you know you aren’t going anywhere. Different story when you are win now team.
  19. Interesting hypothetical question. My view is that for sure there isn’t any surplus value in his contract but I bet he would get claimed. Catching is so scarce. I actually had the same hypothetical thought about Correa. If the Twins are going to run with a lower payroll going forward would getting out of his contract be worth it? For example go to him and say Carlos do you want another shot at free agency? If he has a good year this year would he get a better deal than what he has? I know it’s not happening but an interesting thought exercise (for me anyway).
  20. Understood. Or they just aren’t that accurate.
  21. This is a good summation in my opinion. I like Julien and credit him for the hard work involved in improving his fielding. However I’m not nearly as high on him as most here. His babip was really high last year so some regression is likely. How much will determine his effectiveness going forward. I disagree with the comparisons to Koskie as he was a really good athlete. Juliens ceiling as a defender is mediocre - his hands are not soft and he is stiff in movement. These factors combined with him not hitting leftys at all tells me he can be a useful but not great player. Having said that I admire his competitiveness when he steps in the box.
  22. This sums my feelings about defensive metrics quite nicely. The tip off for me is how much volatility there is in the rankings from year to year. Fielding in baseball would be something that gradually improves or declines. A good fielder doesnt become below average in one year and vice versa.
  23. No doubt Carl was a uber successful businessman and civic leader. However what i stated is true. It’s part of his legacy along with many positives
  24. Yes he does. Of course the master was Greg Maddux. He had so much run on the two seamer that it fooled everyone including the umpires.
  25. I think this is a good observation. I have been generally meh on Falvine but he has grown in his job. This off-season is really a feather in his cap as he has made adjustments to the team with no money. It’s really the bright spot to this payroll cutting mess.
