  1. Let the guy prove himself at AAA first. If he is hitting there he will certainly get a chance with the Twins due to injury. He has the potential to be a difference maker for the Twins because he would inject some speed and plus defense which they badly need. However the hitting profile has me a bit nervous. Uber patient with a lot of swing and miss. Does that remind you of anyone?
  2. Good example of little things that make a big difference in the middle infield. High feed forces the SS to catch the ball and bring back to his throwing hand. Freeman would have been out. With a normal feed.
  3. That’s referred to as a Martin as in Austin Martin. Did it at least twice last season.
  4. Correct.
  5. I would tender him. I’m not over the moon about his chances but it’s like making a small call in poker so you can see the flop. I believe he has one option remaining so you don’t have to put him on the team right away. This gives a chance to catch lightning in a bottle.
  6. I like that he throws all of his pitches with conviction. Certainly he will continue to improve as he gets more comfortable in the big leagues. What I am concerned about is the league just started to see him. If they stop chasing outside the zone things could get ugly.
  7. Never heard Herbies glove described as a liability. You may want to re-consider that observation. And like above Knoblauchs rookie season was pretty amazing
  8. I have no heartburn about his contract. It’s not much in MLB terms and was done in good faith. He got hurt - it happens. Considering the guys that they have run through the back of the pen it’s not out of the question we see him again. Anyway good for him - I hope he put a couple million in the stock market when he got paid. He will be just fine.
  9. Pretty much this. As long as pitchers don’t fear him he is never going to walk that much. If he could hit some doubles and become passable in LF / CF he might be a bench player. Even if he starts in St Paul I’m sure he will get a chance due to injuries but if I recall he wasn’t lighting it up AAA either. At the time of the trade I was disappointed because I really dislike players that don’t have at least one position where they are above average. Otherwise they really have to hit to be a contributor. The Twins seem to collect guys like this like coffee mugs.
  10. 100% the off-season. Other than the Santana signing it was a complete failure starting with the slashing of payroll continued by a series of bad decisions by Falvine. I kept waiting for one of our top three starters to get hurt as that was surely going to be a big problem.
  11. We have a team of oft injured players. We have a team with questions marks at first second third left and maybe right. Castro is hugely valuable to this team.
  12. So let’s see - we have a below average hitter with no power. We have a well below average fielder with a poor arm. He has speed but makes mistakes on the base paths. So to answer the question I’m not encouraged by his rookie season. Doesn’t mean I’m going to give up on him but if I’m running the team he would start in St Paul with a chance to earn his way up to the bigs. To me he looks like a guy that is going to have to improve quite a bit to even be a fourth outfielder.
  13. Normally I would be against a move like this. In this case I am not. Jax is a completely different pitcher now than when he started previously. I don’t see the “risk” others do other than a possible increase in injury risk. If he isn’t good as a starter he can go back to the pen easily. With payroll constraints this might be the only way the Twins add a playoff caliber starter. I think it is possible that he could end up being better than Ober and Ryan.
  14. Let’s put it this way. If he pitches well in St Paul (better than last year) he will get a chance at some point. Teams need upwards of 8 starters and 10-12 relievers.
  15. This. One of the first steps in assessing data is a simple test for reasonableness. By looking at the Twins offense one would surmise that there is noise in the data. For example: the Twins seem to try and pull everything. In your scenario any thing in the air to left is being counted as a good outcome. Maybe there are a bunch of sliders on the outside corner that get pulled to left and have no chance of doing damage?
  16. I should have written my post differently. I’m not saying Martin can’t be a contributor but the premise was he could replace Martin this year which is the part I described as laughable. To answer your question I’m not sure he has a “best” position. With a bunch of reps he could be average in LF and a stop gap in CF.
  17. I fully believe the Pohlads intend to sell. However I also believe they will not accept an offer they don’t deem to be to their liking. So yea I won’t be surprised if they don’t sell.
  18. The biggest difference in the field which is important for a utility guy IMO. Castro is plus at 3 positions and passable at SS and CF. Martin is pretty bad anywhere you play him.
  19. The “depth” you cite behind Jax consists of one guy - Cole Sands. Counting on the rest of that injured inconsistent bunch is how you end up with crappy bullpens.
  20. The notion that Martin can take Castros place is laughable.
  21. With this lineup we aren’t going to be a basestealing team. I just want the mistakes to be reduced. We gave away far too many outs by making fundamental mistakes on the bases.
  22. For me the most important point is whether the orgs hitting philosophy will change. If not I am not sure it matters who the coach is. I will say that Falvey has generally done really well with his coaching hires.
  23. The ages on this list are 22-25. None of these guys will be big leaguers.
