  1. It seems that the management team is too worried about pitch counts and times thru lineups instead of how the starters are pitching. There have been more than a few times that I just can't understand why Rocco is pulling the starter. If the guy is still looking strong let him go! If your spread sheet says its time to change then get your pen warming so if the starter falters you can go get him right away instead of waiting 3 or 4 batters. ! or 2 innings means at least 1 less bullpen arm has to come in. If you lose a long or mid reliever to warmups it seems better to me than taking a chance at having him come in and get blown up in the game.
  2. I am trying to understand the "plan" I keep hearing about. They pulled Smeltzer in Toronto supposedly because they didn't want him to face the top top of the order for the 3rd time, yet he had been pitching fairly well after settling in and had a low pitch count. Last night they leave Sands in (which I completely agree with) in basically the same situation even though he wasn't pitching that well, and it didn't appear on TV they had anyone getting ready in the pen in case of a meltdown. So was the plan to just throw him under the bus and let the team lose or what?
  3. You hit an important point. The fact that pretty much all the teams have quit letting their starters pitch until they are actually getting tired. IMO most teams including the Twins could average at least 1 reliever less a game if they let their starters go longer. Sure sometimes they have to get pulled early due to getting knocked around, but to pull a guy that is doing fine, with a decent pitch count, just because he's about to face the lineup for the 3rd time is ridiculous IMO. If you are worried get a guy loosening up in the pen but maybe, just maybe, the starter can give another inning or 2 and save a reliever or 2. But so many teams now want to go with some sort of plan.
  4. As I said, we got lucky to add on those runs late. Or do you think that was part of the plan too?
  5. Smeltzer should have come back out for another inning. This crap of having a plan is only as good as the players that are trying to play it out and the guys they are playing against. NO plan is going to work out all the time and you have to have a reasonable plan B and C etc.. With the guys we had available yesterday where would we have turned to if the game had gone into extra innings? Did "the plan" take that into account? Who drew up the plan? Yesterday the Twins got lucky they added on some runs late. Otherwise it would just be another in a long list of blown bullpen decisions based on some stupid "plan".
  6. I really wonder how many decisions Rocco makes on his own. How many things are coming down from the FO? How many times does he just go with his "gut", or does he just look at the computer printouts and play it the safe way. The Twins have had some really good managers over the years, some that have had a lot less talent yet have managed to get the most out of what they had. Rocco has had fairly talented teams to work with, but IMO, he hasn't really been able to get the most out of what he's been given, yet. With that being said, I will also say other than the way he handles the pitching staff, it seems like he is improving. Now he just needs to figure out the handling of pitchers.
  7. Bundy=Shoemaker. When will this FO learn to quit buying washed up retreads and hope to transform them.
  8. I believe the team can stay competitive with good defense and good pitching. However, after you get through Ryan, Gray, and Ober the good gets to "lets hope its a lucky day. Bundy is very hittable, the geniuses in management are convinced we need to save Archers arm, and Winder (who I think is the best option) has been deemed "long reliever" by those same geniuses. In the pen we have a guy that should be our closer that the Swammi prefers in a setup role, a "closer" (Pagan) that should be middle reliever, and other than Smith either has been or re-treads or minor league starters trying to relieve in the majors. Yes, I think this team has the ability to win a weak division but without some real help especially in the pen, I would say advancing in the playoffs would be an extremely long shot.
  9. I don't know what it is, but it sure aint baseball!
  10. I'm glad to see someone else feels the same as I do about our Management. I'll add to what you said. He used both Duran and Pagan up so who's going to pitch if by chance we get a lead to protect tonight? We can pretty much bet it wont be Duran for at least a couple days after throwing 2 innings and back to backs seem to be too much stress on the arms of todays bullpen arms according to the Swami Balldelli. After all we need to save those arms for later in the season when it may just be too late unless they make some changes in a big way and in a hurry!
  11. Is it time to make room on the 40 for Hamilton? Seems like they have tried just about all the starters out, maybe time to check out a reliever. He didn't do bad when with Chicago as I remember, though I could be wrong he seems to be doing well in AAA.
  12. I like Archer but unless he can stretch out to at least 5+ innings he doesn't belong in the starting rotation. I've been saying since the start of ST we need at least 1 more starter either through trade or promotion. AS the article points out promotions are looking thin right now. Sounds like time for the FO to work the phones!
  13. I'd call up Lewis. Celestino should be off the covid list soon and to make room for him then they can send down Miranda. According to TV Gordon has been getting practice reps at 1B in case Arraez needs a break and in ST both catchers got some practice reps at 1B. If I was running the Twins I would also give both Lewis and Urshala some practice time there as well.
  14. I'm thinking it might be time to move Archer into a middle relief role. Let him go out an let it loose for 1 or 2 innings every 3 or 4 days. The plan they have him on now is hurting taxing the pen and thus hurting the team. Its one thing to nurse a guy along for the 1st few weeks but we're almost 2 months in now. If he isn't stretched out yet, it should either be getting done in the pen or in the minors IMO.
  15. I don't like the idea of bringing him up with the idea of being an opener. Burns a spot in the pen and we should have enough conventional starters with Ryan, Ober, Gray, Winder, Archer, Smeltzer, & Bundy to come up with a group of 5. I would favor stretching him out in AA for the 1st half and then maybe move him up to AAA in the 2nd half. If he can't handle the work load then convert him to the bullpen.
  16. Are the true colors showing through in the bullpen? Like so many others on this site I'll say it again, this team needs more help with their pitching. If Archer can't get stretched out to go more than 4 then he could/should be pen material. That would maybe help a little. Need more help down there sooner rather than later.
  17. You are correct about the crime or what I call civil disobedience. I quit going to night games after all the rioting down there last year.
  18. I can't speak for anyone else but I made the decision to quit going to the games based on a few things. 1- Money. Being on Social Security my income just isn't keeping up with inflation and between cost for gas and parking and tickets not to mention concessions it is a big expense. I have made it a point in past years to get to 1 game a month but.... 2-The last 4 games I've gone too have had the "B' lineups playing and I just wont pay the above money to watch. 3-As an older person its getting more difficult to navigate downtown. Have to drive almost an hour to get there, then find a lot to park, then walk a few blocks to the stadium. Tough for a partially handicapped old guy to do. 4-Still upset over the way the whole labor situation was handled by BOTH sides. But thats a story thats been argued over in other places at other times.
  19. So far the Twins have beaten the teams they should beat which is the sign of a contender, The true test will be as they get into the tougher part of their schedule. If they can continue to win or at least play slightly above .500 against the tough teams then we can say they are for real. I have concerns about the pitching. After Ryan, Gray, and Ober things look shaky. I have very little confidence in Bundy and it seems Rocco and Wes are leery about stretching out Archer. The pen looks iffy after Smith, Duran, Pagan, & Thielbar. Iffy on Jax & Duffy & Stashak. IMO a trade or a promotion for a starter is necessary. I would like to see Winder replace Bundy and a new starter replace Archer (if they're not going to stretch him out) and move Archer into long relief. I don't really know what to do with Bundy.
  20. In a pregame interview Archer sure sounded like he wanted to pitch longer. Pulled last night under 80 pitches. Perhaps Rocco or Wes noticed something that I didn't see (after all that's why they get paid) but it sure seemed like he could have gone another inning.
  21. A few of my own takes; 1-Our hitters have figured out they don't always have to swing for the fences. 2-Our hitters have learned they don't have to pull the ball to get on base. 3-Arraez has found a home on defense 4-We need at least 1 more quality starter, either from a trade or promotion 5-Rocco still can't manage a bullpen 6-Duran is for real 7-We have some pretty darn good players knocking on the door in the minors 8-What a difference a year makes!
  22. I agree. Arraez has found a home. Keep hearing about how short he is at 1st base but he gets what he can reach. Never had a doubt about his ability to get on base. With the "new" ball it is almost a perfect fit for his hitting style!
  23. Just another case of Rocco mismanaging the pen. Leaving Cano in there that long hanging out there to dry when he obviously didn't have it was just wrong.
