    Career ERA first time through order 4.13. Career second time 4.17. If you were going by the small sample size of lust his last year's statistics ast year then his 2.45 ERA as a reliever would say that he could be a very effective pitcher.

    boston Sandy Leon was a purchase, Moreland and Nunez were bargain free agents . JD Martinez and Hanly Ramirez were not a bargain free agent. They traded for Kinsler and Pearce, not giving up much. , The rest of their lineup was their own drafted, or international players. Their starting pitching pretty much traded for except for Price. In 2017 Logan Forsythe OPS .786 for the playoffs. Can't blame him.

    if their foresight was the core of the team was marginally better with a year more of experience the adding a pitcher with a career fip of 3.5, a solid workhorse reliever and a player that hit 38hr the year before does show effort.. To think that the 85 win team from 17 could become a ws contender shows neither foresight nor hindsight, merely wishful thinking

    Any realistic scenario that you could come up with that the Twins would be 'going for it" and staying under a 150 million payroll would have still produced a finish outside of the playoffs.

    Free agents are paid what they are worth is your statement. How was Logan Morrison worth 5.5 million plus the option?

    If Betts thought he could get more then he should have went to arbitration. He set his value by agreeing to the contract Except for one year Harper has been in the 4 range for WAR except for the one year. People remember the one year and forget the rest. Before Heyward signed the contract he had been a 5 WAR player. Heyward at the same age was a consistently better overall player. The point on Heyward that you missed completely is that he got the money then tanked. Sandoval got the money and tanked. They both were still in their under 30 years old prime age.

    Rodney blew six saves and was shipped out to blow more. Ryan Pressly blew 4 and was shipped out and blew 2 more. Duke blew 3 and was shipped out. Busenitz blew 2 and was demoted. The people responsible for half the blown saves are gone.

    Betts 20 million, Castellanos almost 10 million. Whatever Odorizzi is getting paid. The tired refrain of players being grossly underpaid before free agency is falling apart. The AAV of contracts seems to be doing OK for the players. It is the length that is not there. Why are teams reluctant on Harper and Machado despite their age? Jason Heyward would be exhibit A. To some extent Sandoval and Hosmer who were also young would give one pause to say youth alone isn't a surefire thing.

    Cron hit 30 hr last year. LoMo II or reached his potential? Gordon Below average fielder an hitter or slow developing. Cron has been a replacement level 1b/dh with one good season. For 2019 that has value. On the other side of the debate is all about potential and a failure at AAA. You could probably get a plyer that has put up Gordon like numbers for Cron, just not the pedigree

    Orioles, Rangers, and Royals are the race for the bottom. Lat year 8 teams had better records. The climb over the Indians is just as steep as the climb over any other team to get to the wild card.

    A player earned the number being retired. The teams waiting years to retire the number are waiting for what? If the player earned it they shouldn't have to wait.

    Pomeranze had a great 2017, a good 2016. Injuries seem to derail him. Guessing which of Buchholz or Pmeranz would hold up for a season is a poor bet. As minimal wage fliers that would be fine. Counting on them for a season would not be a building sort of move.

    The front office was still adding multi million dollar contracts in spring training to get to last years high payroll. In terms of trusted sources I do remember a deal a few years ago was going to be done in 24 hours bringing back multiple prospects for Dozier. Mud repeated.

    After Harper there would be hoping Brantley could stay healthy or players that hope they can overcome old age.

    From the where are we now thread there was the report they were looking at the medicals and dollars of 3-4 players. To those curious as to who those players were, they found out 2 of them. The aged and aging veteran MI available and preferred by many here would be more likely to be looking for security in a contract. Length is security. With Gordon and Lewis coming it is not unreasonable for the front office to look at one year players. A one year player in free agency is going to have a few warts. For Schoop it is a slightly lower than average OBP but he has a higher woba for is career. Woba, if the stat guys are correct, is a little more indicative of runs scoring than OBP Schoop having a bounce back year or better will be adequate at 2b. He likely will not be as good as Murphy or Lowrie, but his contract reflects that. If they use the money to sign back end RP rather than 5th inning players hoping to be back end pitchers the club will be ahead. That was IF.

    Live long and prosper. You will need to waiting for Portland to get an MLB team. Portland did not support the PCL team. Considering there wasn't that big of drop in attendance for a northwest league team located in the remote suburb, the chances of getting a team with a fan base of 3-4 thousand people is remote. About as remote as the Twins signing Harper and Machado.
