  1. Depends if the Twins are in the hunt this year. If we are not and they are doing well, we probably turn at least one of them into other assets. If the Twins do well the chances are good we QO them for one year.
  2. You seem to have several misconceptions. I just went to a single A ballgame this year and tickets were like $12 with all above 7. I also believe that your 3500 being a good crowd would not be true when you get to AA and above. Second point, no matter which career you pursue, the same thing happens that happens to ballplayers. Most companies can always find someone cheaper to do your job. And if they can only do 90% of what you do, they are fine with it. That is why many of us that worked in computers spent the last part of our career consulting, because no company wants to pay high salaries when they do not need to. That is what the players are fighting for. If you have looked their are still a number of FA's out there to be signed. Now some may have too high expectations, but a lot of productive mid level players can be replaced cheaply. Twins have 3 pitchers that this is the last year of their contracts. If some of the AAAA type player (Stewart, Gonsalves, Littell) show they can do the job, do you expect the Twins to retain more than one of the three. And because of the prices the Twins payroll will probably fall in this case next year.
  3. Next CBA will be interesting to see if the players can force a minimum spend on major league owners (say $100 million). Otherwise you will see wage deflation for anyone not better than the middle class of ballplayers. Stars will get paid, the rest will become replaceable parts based on the economic sight of the owner of any given franchise. Why pay a decent player between $5 - $10 million a year, when you can pay a player $600,000 to do 90% of what the other player was doing, if you know you are not going to be competitive in the current year. This would also come coupled with a hard salary cap. Only other thing that might happen is that teams are given a fixed number of years of control based on when a player signs. At the current time this is 13 years, 4 years before having to be put on a 40 man, 3 option years, and 6 years before FA. For most players that will hit FA (being a productive MLB ballplayer) it is probably closer to 11 with the difference being put on the 40 man until you are in the major leagues. To make changes you will have to cut this to about 9, so the bulk of the players can hit FA while still in their prime. This would have a massive affect not only on the major league, but also the minor leagues as why spend money on longer shots, since their is little payback even now only 2 - 3 max make the majors from each teams 30 draft picks.
  4. stuff, the rest of those pitchers have much better natural stuff than Gonsalves. If they all have the same ability to command those pitchers all of those listed above will be better than Gonsalves. That is a very big if.
  5. Gordon has to take a big step forward this year. Otherwise he will be trade bait or worse a bust. He also has to learn to take a walk and use his speed. Schoop was a great one year signing, now we will see if he can bounce back.
  6. It is more of a pitchers question. Maddux and Glavine lived on hitting the catchers mitt. It would start on the corner and keep moving outside to see how much a ump would give them. Some umps gave 3 inches on the outer edge. That made them on those days almost unhittable. Good catchers and framers can get an inch or a little more on the corner. Those are worth their weight in gold.
  7. I agree with raising the minor league players salaries and maybe going to 4 years of arbitration for everyone. There are ways to game every change, so I feel we need a minimum spend floor for major league talent, somewhere at the current time around $90 million a year. That would prop up the floor, no way to fix the ceiling. Analytics are starting to fix it, but older players just will not get good contracts any more.
  8. If he does you have other options here. I am more optimistic here.
  9. Garver is the question mark. If he can handle the workload behind the plate and produce the offense he showed last year, he is the starting catcher. If the concussion issue comes back, he is a firstbaseman, and do not know if he will hit well enough for that position. Astudillo, I would like to have with the club, but Castro will be here to start and it is hard to see him being released unless he is horrible. Maybe the Twins have a better idea what Astudillo is, because he seems to be a hit machine, and Twins could use that. Still believe Twins will not fairly store Astudillo in Rochester until he is needed (either catcher issue or total Sano failure). Would like to see him get the chance as I feel he can help this club.
  10. Lot's of baseball before the draft, so the lists will change a lot. I also noted there seems to be a lot of players in the same range from around where the Twins first pick falls to the thirties. Twins should get some decent players and the new FO seems to be doing very good things in this area. I agree with the posters who want high school players, higher gain/risk factors. Twins seem to have talent in the pipeline for around 5 years and I would like to see if they can get over the top by drafting some higher talent high school players, though the college route last year worked out well.
  11. I might be down there for part of a day between March 6 and about March 11. Wife is making details as we have been invited by friends. Hoping to see one or two of you there as last time went down to the minor league fields and saw a lot. We winter in Clearwater, so can see the Twins if they come up this way. I think this year most of the visits are early which makes them less interesting, since few of the regulars come up to the early games and most depart between inning 3 and 6. Phillies stadium is about 3 miles away, have not found the Blue Jays stadium yet, but guess it is about 7 - 8 miles. Yankees are more like about 15.
  12. I saw an article earlier this week where Adam Wainwright thought the players might go on strike at the all star game this year in an effort to change what many players are feeling unfair labor practices and collusion by the owners.
  13. If Kirloff comes near his maximum top of his ceiling, it could mean that the Twins will view Rosario as the expendable piece (depending on his production) in the next few years. I believe even with the Twins Daily staff Kirloff will be here (given a good season in Pensacola) either late 2019 or late April in 2020. His top end is well above either of the Twins two corner outfielder or any first baseman now in the system.
  14. I think Cave gets exposed by the pitcher's union either in spring training or at the start of the year. This should open the door for Wade to come up and take over, at least short term as the 4th outfielder.
  15. I am hoping they sign Berrios, but that may be difficult, due to valuation problems. Rosario, I think if they want him, they will be able to sign him. He is the most large variation player we have and may want to bet on himself. Signing him at a price, even a slight overpay, will send a message the Twins are serious about contending on a regular basis, not like some of the other small market clubs, that are always in a state of flux.
  16. Great article. I am concerned about the lack of OBP on the Twins. Other concern not mentioned here is how Cleveland right handers stack up against same sided hitters. I would be much more concerned if most of the righty starters had Whale like statistics. The Whale for those of you who do not reconize the term was Rich Reshuel who was death on righties and very hittable by lefties. (pardon the spelling). There are two sides to this, but give what MLB is trying to do to speed up the game, balanced hitters seem to be the way to go (due to 13 man pitching staffs, 3 bench players is all you can carry at this time).
  17. Kaat is supposed to be very good so will welcome him. Will have to see how the rest of the group shakes out. Expect Byleven will retire in a year or two, so hoping the replacements are better than Burt (for some of you this is a very small bar to cross). Remember Hunter as being one of the better ones so he will be missed, but we shall see on the rest.
  18. I was more impressed by the comment on Fangraphs that gave Kirloff a 15 - 20% chance to be the next Joey Votto. That is very high praise, now we shall see. I could see him being here if he starts in Pensacola between late 2019 and May 2020. One publication had him moving Kepler to first base or 4th outfielder or trade bait. Can't wait to see how he turns out.
  19. We shall see how this plays out. If the Twins sign 2 - 3 of their core to longer term contracts, some of the angst will die down. However if they do not sign some of the core and then sign no more free agents, I feel this board will explode by the end of spring training. I can understand why they have not been in on many free agents, needing to know what the core timeline is (plan A). But there seems to be no plan B, having enough vets in place if some of the youngsters fail.
  20. I think they should start him at least in Penscola or maybe even like some here, in the Twins bullpen like St. Louis does with a lot of young pitchers. Would like to give him part of the year in the minors to see if he can develop the third pitch. Most pitchers do a at least one bullpen session inbetween starts, so to me it is possible they could use him every other day in the bullpen, or use him to start in less stressful roles where he could work the third pitch in (changeup) without worring too much about the results. Then move him to higher leverage situations depending on his results with 2 - 3 pitches. Just do not know how much time one pitching coach can spend in the minors with an elite prospect vs in Minnesota where you have 2 - 3 coaches that can work with pitchers.
  21. I might have Javier ahead of him, just because of position and having more experience (that might change after this year). Starting him at Ft. Myers seems right to me. If he can move through Ft. Myers and do well in AA, then Twins are looking at the great position of being able to move a controlable starting outfielder with a prospect or two for a front line starter, or maybe a catcher if needed.
  22. Would prefer as a starter, but think it is more important to have him develop at the major league level and help the Twins win this year. He could move back to starting, but sending him to Rochester to me does little good. If he dominates there, what will the Twins do?. So use him in long relief to start and move to starting if one of the starters fails or you can trade one.
  23. He has a very high ceiling, so here's hoping he can get off to a good start in Cedar Rapids and push his way to Ft. Myers this year.
  24. The writing is now officially on the wall. Not to say that more competition is better. Was not stated he has a opt out, so he could be stashed in Rochester if needed.
  25. At some point in time we will all be in an al carte type of system. Most users are going to be able to get their local channels one way or another fairly cheap. Then it's a question of do you add on a DVR type system and/or buy whatever packages you want for streaming. Buying the individual packages for each channel will be too expensive, so it will be mix and match. But if you are not interested in buying a lot of the secondary channel of TV content, sports packages might be the way to go. I know their are other semi - legal ways to do this, but the future in murky and this is probably the Pohlad's best chance to control their future.
