  1. The top tier of players will be paid this offseason, but it will neither be deep or many players per club as the luxury tax issues will start to reign in spending way over the cap. I agree with ND-fan that the players are already unhappy and a few big contracts with the rest of the over 30 crowd getting a max of 3 year contracts. The main reason the top players will get paid is the bulk of them are 30 and under. Teams are learning that steroids had a big effect in players performing well into their late thirties and we are back to the older models of most major league players being done between 32 and 35. I also wrote a piece a while back expecting a strike or a very difficult discussion after the 2021 season. Enjoy the next few seasons as I expect a strike in 2022. Players have 4 years to prepare for this, so the smart ones will have more than enough money to last through this. The players hurt will be the 0 - 3 year players who will not have time to put money away. I do not know if I would even offer a QO depending on what I think of Gordon. Too much a chance that an FA like Dozier may take it.
  2. Depends how things work out. I will reserve judgement until then. Just was concerned these where not the new front offices guys, so where looked at differently.
  3. Kinley had better be good, we lost Bard over him and Bard at the last I looked was probably going to make the Angels. Whether or not Kinley is better the Busenitz, we still have Curtiss down in Rochester also. Twins have arms, just a question of control of their pitches and how many have a very good to great second pitch. I am just worried how many games this pen will blow in April and May before things are figured out (also the 5th starter), and how big a hole the Twins will dig themselves because of it.
  4. Problem with some of this approach is that you are punishing players who have been in the majors before, for working on something new (especially pitchers). Some may not even realize their job is on the line. Have no big problem with this if it is communicated to the players involved. Do not know if Busenitz was working on some different things and then got optioned, rather than using what he had and looking good.
  5. Duffey to me is marginal, so no big deal. Busenitz did not deserve this, but it is the game that all teams play. He will be back, just hope it does not cost too many games to find this out. Hard to believe the Twins are going to carry two blowout game type relievers to start the year, one would be plenty. I guess after Bard looks to make the Angels, it would look very bad for Kinley to fail.
  6. No to Aybar, would rather carry a 5th outfielder if Sano is not suspended. If Sano is suspended would rather have the Twins give Gordon a 15 - 30 game shot as a learning experience. Do not waste time on an over the hill player. Maybe Aybar would take the money and a minor league assignment for the Twins. That would be ideal if Gordon proves early on to not be ready. Depending on temperament I feel it would be in the Twins interest to let people play up and see if they can improve on the fly. I know that type of challenge worked for me in a couple of different places, why not give it a try.
  7. He is about out of time, that is the problem. Too many hanging curves and too many straight fastballs. Do not see how he can make the team without great outings the rest of the way.
  8. At this point I would say it is unlikely he can figure things out. Unfortunately he may need to bounce around a bit before he will listen and learn.
  9. I also think outside of maybe Lewis, most of these players start at Cedar Rapids. A few of them will make Fort Myers at midseason. If Lewis starts at Fort Myers, I believe he will do well enough to move to Chattanooga in midseason.
  10. The issue here is can Gordon produce for a full season. He has to get stronger. His first halves have been extremely good, so if Sano is suspended, give him a chance up here and let him run with it.
  11. There is the other side of this discussion, that Polanco felt his career slipping away last year and chose to use the stuff. As I understand it, this drug will make you bigger and stronger. Twins will have to evaluate this going forward, it seems like too easy to just be a mistake.
  12. At this stage in his career, I view Aybar as a below replacement level player. Do not keep him, he will find another club, who wants a stopgap because they are rebuilding.
  13. I think what happens now depends on how Sano is dealt with. If he is suspended (and I think he will be, no proof, just gut), then I would roll with Gordon for the short while. If Gordon makes it you have a pleasant problem, if he does not, he is optioned when Sano returns and all is good. Then the only issue is who is the extra outfielder you carry.
  14. That may be, but depending on what you think of Gordon, he may only be a two or three year stopgap (not saying he won't be a productive major league player). We need to see what he can do, and will not be much worse off if he is not ready. You are only talking probably at most 15 - 20 games here. I am willing to take that risk. Only downside would be if you already know Sano is getting a 30 game suspension. That changes the outlook.
  15. I am of the opinion to let Gordon fly with the opportunity. He may or may not fail, but I consider him the best option and the least downside of the other options. This may well be the best line if Sano is suspended a short while at the beginning of the season and Escobar has to play third. Do not keep Aybar, we do not need 2 rally killers in the lineup.
  16. Pressly will make the team, but hopefully will be on a short leash. Without the control, he is a AAAA pitcher, but at this time would hate to give up on him and have another team fix him.
  17. Do not know, if I do not like my options, maybe this is the time to give Gordon a shot and ride with him. If he fails option him and bring up one of the outfielders. Escobar and Adrianza should be good as infield backups. Only issue is if Sano is also suspended, then the Twins depth could be tested. Maybe Twins need to start Lewis in Chattanooga as a backup line and see if Lewis can handle it to accelerate his timeline.
  18. None of these surprise me or move the needle. Most of these players are depth or future Twins, none of them were expected to make the club. Reed, Gordon, and Wade will be here probably later this year or early next. Looks like biggest question is whether Twins trade or DFA Grossman, if they decide to care more about defense or send Granite and Cave down to keep Grossman. Expect another round of cuts just before next weekend or may have more clarity then.
  19. Twins probably see as much or more upside than Granite in Cave. Will see how it shakes out.
  20. Cave is AAA protection against an injury longer than a few days in the outfield. If he preforms he may enable one of the corner outfielders to headline a front end starter trade. If not probably a better depth piece than Grossman, long term. Not a bad get.
  21. Looks like Bard has a decent chance of making the Angels bullpen based on an article posted in mlbtraderumors this morning. Could be a fail (1 item) for this front office. Never liked losing Bard, but he was never healthily and now seems to be coming into his potential.
  22. I think this is more serious than most of you think. I have seen the statements that Sano was being keep away from female Lookout employees to be telling. They could be a fire under the smoke. My guess if from a low of 15 days to a high of 30 days. I hope he grows up, if it occurs again here, it will become a major issue.
