  1. I am not as worried about who starts in Minnesota, want to know the progression, because I am all for letting some of the young ones pitch here and get their feet wet. Not have to perform when an injury hits and the Twins are in a tight race.
  2. He will learn little in AA. He needs to pitch somewhere his mistakes will be punished. Doubt there is room for him in the majors, so hope he can start in Rochester.
  3. Right now Romero is pitching later on games. Will see if he pitches earlier, that would mean Twins are interested in seeing if he can come north
  4. Only way I can see for Mauer to return is Rooker not being ready
  5. Still would like to see one more righthanded bat. With the current rules wonder how many times the Twins will see a lefty starter from AAA to face them.
  6. KC might be a little better. Doubt Detroit will get much over 60. We should have a chance. Without a better starting staff, doubt we will go far in the playoffs. Maybe one of the kids steps up.
  7. Still do not like Pressly. Do like the hitters we finished last year with, no Aybar or Vargas. Probably will be Grossman though I prefer Granite. We shall see.
  8. Lynn had bad metrics to go with reasonable stats. He could well be better the second year back from TJ surgery. Knock from me is that he is a basic fastball pitcher. He can pitch around guys and has the pitcher in the national league, he gets none of those advantages.
  9. I heard they made an offer to Lynn, but it was a buy low offer (from what I saw). Maybe the Twins could eventually get it done for 2/$24, but do not see it happening yet. Twins would have to be convinced that all other options were not working out.
  10. Problem for the mid market teams is staying on top. The coast teams can buy players they need to fill in, mid market teams seem have a period where they are good and then a 4-5 year reload. I think if a player wants to be here and work it out, that can probably happen. Most of those will be youngsters who sign a contract to take away the first few years of FA. Once a player gets over 30, chances of an extension drop away a lot. This seems to mirror my thoughts on this era, where most of your average to average plus players are done fulltime in their early 30's. Unless Pohlad steps in to keep a popular player, I can see this group trying to sign players to one extension and then in most cases letting the player walk. It's a harder approach, but this is where the market is heading. We shall see if it bounces back, but it is going toward the era where only the great players get paid, and most of the rest will be interchangeable parts. Only the clubs with lots of money will have the luxury of having a huge payroll.
  11. My guess for Varges, is that they hold onto him until the last week of spring training and hope he hits well, if he does not maybe they can get a C+ or B- prospect for him who is a long ways away. If he does not hit well the last week to 10 days, he will probably be cut and have to go back to AAA or overseas for his next opportunity (maybe AAA this year and overseas starting next year). To me he is your classic AAAA player.
  12. It looks like Gordon and Polonco will be the Twins middle infield for at least 2019 and possibly 2020. Do not see Dozier resigning here (maybe he takes the QO). Hopefully Twins will use some of the money and buy a front line pitcher. Gordon has the upside of an above average major league player (no longer see him as an elite player), but that still is very good.
  13. Most clubs are making money(if not all). I can understand that you are looking at a salary floor being a major point in the next CBA. Between the national TV money, revenue sharing, and the local TV and radio contract I would guess(without knowing) that all clubs start at about $100 million in income (even the worst ones should have about that if not more). Add ticket sales and concessions and you probably have a floor of about $140 million. using the twins model of 48 - 52% of revenue, you could make a case for a minimum payroll of at least $70 million if not more. So many of these clubs are at bottom end (this was based on an Attendance guess of at least 1 million, so most numbers should be a lot higher). I can see where Pittsburg and Tampa Bay and Oakland were on the list. I think Miami is in the 80 - 90 million range so there is a weaker case there. (though the majority owner is known for making money and moving on).
  14. Twins have other players who can play LF against lefties and everyone needs a day off. Grossman will not start against a righty (maybe if Buxton sits). That is the reason I am against Grossman(he has value), but against lefties Morrison could play LF or RF, Sano at first, Escobar at 3rd and either Mauer or another bench piece at DH. That would be a better use for me than carrying Grossman for the few times he would play. Also you would have Granite (or Wade) as your 4th outfielder and they can play all the outfield positions. Wade is not that far away and he could be up this year.
  15. All this being said, I am betting the Dodgers are regretting not raising their offer and getting Brian last offseason, second base was one of their weakest positions last year(if not the weakest).
  16. Count me in on the bandwagon that would like to have him stay here. If he wants a big contract, just do not see that working out here. Clubs are getting smarter and this is not the steroid era where older players held their value to the mid 30's. If he has a decent year extend the QO, but I do not see many clubs paying him more than $15 million a year if he wants more than 3 years. Players just do not age well any more and if you have to move him off of second base he loses a fair part of his value.
  17. According to the Tampa Bay Times the Baseball players union has filed a grievance against teams for not spending their revenue sharing money. According to the rules, revenue sharing is supposed to be used to help clubs spend money on making their product better. This can be either major or minor leagues or other costs related to putting a better product on the field long term http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/rays/2018/02/27/players-union-files-grievance-vs-rays-3-other-teams-over-revenue-sharing-spending/
  18. Sorry, do not see Aybar making this club. He probably would have to do more than he is capable of to make it. I see Adrianza a better shot than Aybar, defends as well and is cheaper. I also see Grossman gone as do not see a role for him here with the Morrison signing. Would like to see Granite or Wade be the 4th outfielder, they both can field and run. I guess Grossman could make it as a platoon partner for either Rosario or Kepler, but think it is early in their careers to call them platoon players.
  19. I like the thought of bring Romero north(if it looks like he is ready) in a long relief role. Just get his feet wet up here, you can then stretch him out here or send him to Rochester to be stretched out after Santana comes back. Or if he is really good, you get rid or option another player. You can never have too much pitching.
  20. I agree on Hughes(at least he will get a long look). If his FB can hold up in the low 90's, he should be able to pitch in this league. Otherwise be becomes a long man, spot starter(that may be his best role), if the Twins add another rotation option or Gonsalves or Romero forces their way onto the staff in spring training (and they may have no shot at this, I do not know).
  21. Pressly is the other guy who I think might be out in the final end. Busenitz is the player I expect to make it. Pressly has never put it all together and with this club, potential is going to mean less than results. (At least I hope so). Would almost like them to deal him early, because late teams become more aware of who might be picked up at no cost (except for salary) and will not offer anything. Maybe he can be fixed, just do not think Twins can afford and try to figure that out.
  22. This will play out this spring. I think there is a chance the Twins will use a major league player to headline a deal for a front line starter. Still it is nice to have a lineup with 3 players that could well hit 30+ HR's. Puts a lot more pressure on the lower end starters of other teams.
  23. I have seen on the internet the Twins offered Sano straight up for Archer and were turned down. It is stuff like this that I am referencing. Sano has no plans to stay here after 6 years, Archer has 4 years on a team friendly contract. I am not only saying Sano, but if we have to include a very good Twins major leaguer to get a front line starter, we need to at least examine it and if it make sense go for it. It is harder to find front line starters than any other position.
  24. Doubt Vargas is worth any more than a throwin on a trade, more likely a release candidate. More likely Grossman is traded, since do not see a role for him here. Twins still need one more bench type.
  25. My guess is you could play Sano at DH against lefties with Escobar at 3rd. On the days Mauer needs a day off now Morrison plays first. This is a great move. It also leaves room for one more since I would guess that Twins will no longer have a need for Grossman after this move. Granite or Wade will be your 4th outfielder. This move also gives the Twins a player to trade for a front line pitcher using either Kepler or Sano as the headliner, that will be even a better use of assets.
