  1. Any of the guys would have high risk. But maybe it is time we took some. Prefer Donaldson, but either (and not both) would be a good start. Twins have the ability to take on Santana's salary, and give only a low level prospect in return. This is more a salary relief(clear a spot) play for Philly. Think he could be gotten cheaply. By the time it will make a payroll deference he will be gone.
  2. It is not known how good Tulo would be given his injuries, so I would pass. Donaldson, I could see, even 3/75 would not break the bank. I do like that he is not a big strikeout guy, Twins have a number of those.
  3. Pitching, Pitching, Pitching. Along with a big bat for either 1B or DH. Twins need to move fast on this front. Waiting has 2 bad sides: 1. They will not get players near the top of the pile. 2. It will encourage the White Sox to move up their plans as both the Twins and the Indians may look beatable. White Sox have a top 5 farm system, with plenty of money to spend. Not a good combination if you wait to let the market come to you.
  4. Agree, need at least 2 from the better relievers pile to have a chance to greatly improve this season.
  5. I know this was a semi joke. I do agree Twins need to spend major money on pitching to get to the next level.
  6. Think Stewart and Arraez are too low and Gonsalves is way too high. Great list.
  7. Prospects still have high value if you are not a club with almost unlimited funds. Twins issue seems to be moving the needle from prospect to (superstar or very good player). Look at the Red Sox. THey have a high payroll, but still have plenty of home grown talent there. That is what the Twins are lacking is getting the players to the next level. It may take a complete overhaul of the Twins minor league system and coaching to do that. Moving a player like Kepler would hurt, but you do not get very good talent in return without giving something that hurts up. The FO just has to be right. What I am seeing now is players doing better after leaving the Twins then they did here. That did not happen much in the Terry Ryan era. Do not know how the Twins position players will work out, but they have a chance to have a very good to great lineup, however I do know you will not win without a considerly better pitching staff, and I see good, but not great pitchers coming (maybe with the exception of Gastrol). Twins also have an almost blank payroll sheet after 2019, they can afford to make trades and signings to greatly improve this area (and not all will work, but Twins will fail if they do not try). I am hoping they stretch a little and go for the upper parts of the pitching Free Agents, not the middle and lower tier. If they do not I am afraid we are back to the Terry Ryan era of being competitive, but not being a real threat to win the World Series.
  8. I am more on addressing the bullpen and adding a free agent SP or 2. Do not think the position players need a lot more, and many of them will be overvalued. Maybe at the end of FA if someone (like Morrison) has fallen in the middle infield, by all means go for it.
  9. I would keep Vasquez over Moya (Moya is more like an AAAA pitcher to me). May not sign the couple of players you selected, Adams is sort of meh. Might prefer Solarte to Descalso just because our lineup was so lefthanded last year. I would give Austin a change to sink or swim to start the year, with either Rooker or Sano able to play there if he fails. Granite could well be released if he does not have options left and I feel that Wade is better than him and Kirloff will probably be here sometime in 2020.
  10. Moya to me is a AAAA type player, and I could see Vasquez up and signing one of the very good LH relievers. Twins need 2 very good relievers to get to the next level, plus a SP and maybe a 2B, 1B among others.
  11. I feel this is the wrong approach. Cleveland is far from a super team. There is no fall back plan if Buxton struggles or fails. A couple of upper level bullpen pieces and a short term FA at 2nd base or maybe Arraenz should be close without breaking the bank for the future.
  12. Arraez can flat out hit, I believe he is average to average plus on defense. Major leagues can always use players like that. I would like to give him a chance.
  13. I would keep Grossman, without Mauer Twins need OB type, but a non-tender could be reasonable. Would prefer Herrera (younger), and maybe Miller or Britton. Bullpen needs major work and I do not see the Twins signing a starter (though Corbin or Ryu would be nice). Second base or SS I would look to trading some of our depth pieces for a better and maybe cheaper player. Lowrie is too likely to stay in Oakland, but other pieces might help (maybe Castro from the Marlins).
  14. Again depends, I might try to trade a couple of the upper level players who would probably be lost for a couple of equal types who do not have to be protected. Who I would add after the givins: Arranz - he may be more ready than Gordon and could give us a year or two, sometime these guys work out. Jay would depend on if he could recover his stuff, if not he is a lost cause or just a LOOGY. Anderson - too good a chance he will be taken Davis and Lujan I do not know enough about or have a feel for if they would be taken. Would not suprise me either way and the Twins should have enough open slots to add 5 - 6 players, but some may well be left vacant for free agent signings. This is what will make this offseason so interesting. Rooker will probably be better than Weil so would not add him. Wade will be added, but hope he will be traded, how many outfielders do we need, and do not rate him likely to make the club next year.
  15. Good hire, FO now owns this, so will see if he is the manager who gets the most out of his talent.
  16. Players develop at their own rate, and some fail. To those of you who are impatient, I would love to be an opposing GM (like in a fantasy league) who could get a decent player for very little by waiting out the impatient GM. Aaron Hicks is the poster child for this type of player. He played his way into the doghouse and was traded for a player of much less upside and value. I put much of this on the coaches the Twins have had and the inability to bring out the best in players. It can be done, we just have to find the correct coaches to help. Buxton and Sano have to be given every opportunity to succeed, if they fail then he have the problem of what to do with them. The biggest difference I have seen in the playoffs, is the pitching is much better, whether it be starting for some clubs or the bullpen for others, or in the case of Houston some of both.
  17. I feel the Twins should sign one of the pitchers you feel are out of reach, Britton, Miller, Kimbell, Familia, Herrera. Also monitor the trade market for relievers from teams that do not expect to content in 2019.
  18. Issue with the Angels is not the bad contract, it is the lack of starting pitching. They will be in the same market as the Twins and Yankees, and much closer to the luxury threshold.
  19. Also Dodgers have multiple starting pitching options, unlikely they will get into a bidding war for Ryu. They also have extra outfielders and may need or want to clear payroll space for a Kershaw extension and Manny. In the current marketplace making and executing a game play is important. Many teams are just starting or in the middle of rebuilds, Twins should be able to acquire nice assets without breaking the bank. Only about 8 - 10 teams in the AL are even planning to compete next year, National league is about the same, with the upper end reachable only if every inbetween team decides to try. (this is clubs like Arizona, LAA, Seattle, SF). Do not know if the Twins will do this, but I feel it is doable, Twins can afford to take on an expensive contract if a club like Arizona decides to retool on the fly and looks for salary relief (Greinke) Angels with the number of bad contracts they have on the books may have to do the unthinkable and put Trout on the market in the next two years to avoid having him walk for nothing to a team that is able to win. This is about being able to indentify opportunities and going after them. Twins need a big splash to help sell tickets in the next two years. Hope they FO is given the goahead to do it.
  20. Cleveland is far from untouchable and has issues of their own to fix (bullpen, a couple of position issues, what to do with expensive aging players). White Sox could be 2 or more years away (they have money and starting pitching, but earliest is probably 2020). Twins need to strike now, this is our window and to not try could leave us a perpetual second place team. One reason I suggested Danny Duffy as a trade possibility was that we could send 2 - 3 of our AAAA types and KC would hope one or two played up. Duffy will be of little use to them by 2021 - 2022 when they are ready to contend. Kipnis would be another buy low candidate, but unlikely Cleveland would send him here. Twins need to get into the pitching market early (may not work as the Yankees also need several starters, have more money, and could blow by the penalty dollar point for a few years without thinking about it, as long as they are not way over). Severino has Big Don Newcome written all over him at this time. To get piching I feel the Twins are going to have move early and offer reasonable contracts to slight overpays. Do not forget the Twins have another estimated $31 million coming off the books at the end of 2019(Gibson, Oderizzi, Pineda, Addison Reed). core will not be that expensive in 2020 and you may find a couple of them do not make it. This should be sustainable for a few years. Let's go for it.
  21. Appreciate you taking time for the comments, just do not trust Gibson, and do not think at this juncture, Twins would be able to offer a contract that he would accept rather than try FA.
  22. Most of these players where from Arizona, which does not have money, in fact has a money crunch this fall. Other pitchers do not know, but Dodgers have many extra starters, and Boston has several players due raises.
  23. Outside of Pineda (if he has a good year) do not want a long term committment with any of Gibson or Oderizzi after next year.
  24. Corbin may have been a bit high, I was guessing as starting pitching is a hard commodity to get. If you have forgotten Gibson, Oderizzi and Pineda will all be free agents after 2019. Twins need some sure things in the rotation and not all kids in 2020. All kids may work, just do not like to bet on it.
