  1. I agree that if Hildenberger has an option he should be sent down and the bottom two spots be used on a rotating basis, but long term we need a deeper pen. In the playoffs we will probably have to at some point in time see the Yankees and they will have no problem with 6 inning bullpen games if ahead and starter struggles. Our pen has to be better to handle clubs like this.
  2. My guess is that Cave is optioned first. Then if the Twins staff is OK, Romero goes back to Rochester until a 13th pitcher is needed again. One other point, I thought from somewhere that position players had a 30 day rehab, so Sano would only have to be here at the end of the month. That gives more time to sort things out.
  3. Why was Knight put on the restricted list. Or is it not for publication.
  4. Should not feel bad for Baltimore, you have forgotten the season when the Oriles started with like 20 straight losses and got their manager fired. It did not get a lot better that year. Think of how Cal Ripen felt that year and the manager fired was his dad.
  5. Regression is possible, but this is a much deeper lineup than the Twins have had for years. Losing streaks will happen, just hopefully not too many or too long. This Offense can put up big numbers on a regular basis, so should be interesting. I believe if the Twins are playing well in midseason they will add some pitching help.
  6. I would have used Vasquez, but that is nitpicking. I also understand you cannot use the same pitchers all the time. It is one game, but I wonder why Mejia is still on this club as he does not seem to be a fit.
  7. I think Twins are trying to get Romaro used to his new role. Think he will be here soon enough. More worried about Perez and the other starters. Seem to have 14 outities..
  8. I can understand the idea of both the low strike and the high strike. Both are difficult to elevate well. If you elevate the high strike, most of the time you will have a popup or lazy fly ball. Low strike , you will be over the top and a ground ball or again if under it a lot of the time you have a fly ball. Glad to see the Twins are working on this. Anything that helps this staff do better is good.
  9. I see Astudillo is catching more, does this mean that he is in play, or that Twins are trying to find out if he can actually be a catcher, more than a utility player.
  10. Does Adrianza make this club, or have surgery on the shoulder that limits his hitting to one side. Does this mean that Torreyes makes the club. Are you worried about the lack of hitting (I was at the game Sunday), Seems like the Twins were having issues with minor league pitching.
  11. Would rather have Wade for his on base than Cave. We will see how he hits in Rochester. Rest where no surprises. Expect the bullpen picks to be difficult.
  12. I can see Pineda getting between 150 - 170 innings assuming he stays healthy. That means you occasionally need another pitcher to get 2 - 3 innings in games he pitches. I see where the Twins are going with this.
  13. Rosario will probably have a decent year. Would be nice to see him take a step forward. Would like to see him extended, as that would make the next few years clear with Kirloff coming. Otherwise could see him a major trade chip if Rooker is able to cement 1B or Cron is better than we think.
  14. Gonzalez is the backup plan for now. Schoop for this year is a second baseman, I suppose that could change, but would need a breakout from Gordon or Arrenz this year to change it (Gordon possible, Arrenz less possible) but either could happen. My feeling is if this was to happen the Twins season probably went into the toilet early. Sano does not have a lot of time left, and another bad year will bring lots of questions and a ton of pressure on him for next year. I hate to give up on him as I remember both Ortiz and Hicks who just took a few extra years to develop before getting to the next level.
  15. This should be Cleveland's last year of contention. One of their starters is going year to year and if he has a great year this year, he will break the Cleveland bank next year. Then Cleveland will have to decide to rebuild on the fly or trade off the rotation for top minor leaguers to try keep the line moving. The Cleveland farm system is not robust enough to fill in the blanks.
  16. I do think we will see 2 changes for 2020. 1. A pitch clock 2. A 26 or 27 man roster. This will be to get the players association to give on some other issues.
  17. You seem to have several misconceptions. I just went to a single A ballgame this year and tickets were like $12 with all above 7. I also believe that your 3500 being a good crowd would not be true when you get to AA and above. Second point, no matter which career you pursue, the same thing happens that happens to ballplayers. Most companies can always find someone cheaper to do your job. And if they can only do 90% of what you do, they are fine with it. That is why many of us that worked in computers spent the last part of our career consulting, because no company wants to pay high salaries when they do not need to. That is what the players are fighting for. If you have looked their are still a number of FA's out there to be signed. Now some may have too high expectations, but a lot of productive mid level players can be replaced cheaply. Twins have 3 pitchers that this is the last year of their contracts. If some of the AAAA type player (Stewart, Gonsalves, Littell) show they can do the job, do you expect the Twins to retain more than one of the three. And because of the prices the Twins payroll will probably fall in this case next year.
  18. Next CBA will be interesting to see if the players can force a minimum spend on major league owners (say $100 million). Otherwise you will see wage deflation for anyone not better than the middle class of ballplayers. Stars will get paid, the rest will become replaceable parts based on the economic sight of the owner of any given franchise. Why pay a decent player between $5 - $10 million a year, when you can pay a player $600,000 to do 90% of what the other player was doing, if you know you are not going to be competitive in the current year. This would also come coupled with a hard salary cap. Only other thing that might happen is that teams are given a fixed number of years of control based on when a player signs. At the current time this is 13 years, 4 years before having to be put on a 40 man, 3 option years, and 6 years before FA. For most players that will hit FA (being a productive MLB ballplayer) it is probably closer to 11 with the difference being put on the 40 man until you are in the major leagues. To make changes you will have to cut this to about 9, so the bulk of the players can hit FA while still in their prime. This would have a massive affect not only on the major league, but also the minor leagues as why spend money on longer shots, since their is little payback even now only 2 - 3 max make the majors from each teams 30 draft picks.
  19. Gordon has to take a big step forward this year. Otherwise he will be trade bait or worse a bust. He also has to learn to take a walk and use his speed. Schoop was a great one year signing, now we will see if he can bounce back.
  20. I agree with raising the minor league players salaries and maybe going to 4 years of arbitration for everyone. There are ways to game every change, so I feel we need a minimum spend floor for major league talent, somewhere at the current time around $90 million a year. That would prop up the floor, no way to fix the ceiling. Analytics are starting to fix it, but older players just will not get good contracts any more.
  21. If he does you have other options here. I am more optimistic here.
  22. Garver is the question mark. If he can handle the workload behind the plate and produce the offense he showed last year, he is the starting catcher. If the concussion issue comes back, he is a firstbaseman, and do not know if he will hit well enough for that position. Astudillo, I would like to have with the club, but Castro will be here to start and it is hard to see him being released unless he is horrible. Maybe the Twins have a better idea what Astudillo is, because he seems to be a hit machine, and Twins could use that. Still believe Twins will not fairly store Astudillo in Rochester until he is needed (either catcher issue or total Sano failure). Would like to see him get the chance as I feel he can help this club.
  23. I might be down there for part of a day between March 6 and about March 11. Wife is making details as we have been invited by friends. Hoping to see one or two of you there as last time went down to the minor league fields and saw a lot. We winter in Clearwater, so can see the Twins if they come up this way. I think this year most of the visits are early which makes them less interesting, since few of the regulars come up to the early games and most depart between inning 3 and 6. Phillies stadium is about 3 miles away, have not found the Blue Jays stadium yet, but guess it is about 7 - 8 miles. Yankees are more like about 15.
