Would Bringing Back Kyle Gibson Makes Sense?
Doctor Gast replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'd love to have Gibson back (I too, hated to see him go), he's a class act and he seems to have his condition under control. But I agree with 2win87, PHI isn't selling and I'd hate to give up a CF because we won't get enough for them and we need them.- 28 replies

I finally got to see Archer pitch live, it was awesome, Nothing can get me going like a Buxton triple. My impressions- Cotton looked like he was just warming up, like Thornburg who went 2 innings, IMO I think they could be more effective if they could pitch more than 1 inning, which could also help relieve short relief. - I was impressed that Sanchez called "change up" 2x for Thornburg's SO in the 8th. So many times change up hasn't been called while Archer was pitching when the situation cries out for "change up" for a SO. Maybe it's a Wes Johnson thing.

Really enjoyed Cody's article, so much that I was looking forward to see Marquez pitch tonight. Although I wasn't impressed by his lack of SOs, he seemed to keep MN hitters off balance. Great pitching all around and lack of small ball on MN part in a close game. There are some games where the offense don't show up, managering small ball is the game chnger. Not only blaming Baldelli because there are many in this boat. I'm just saying you need to be flexible to adapt to the game as it evolves and how it plays out. Of course if it hasn't been practiced, it's hard to execute. So maybe have a special session to do so. Marquez is a prolific pitcher with a great GB% who has been having a down year. Therefore his trade value is down. Marquez is a good fit with this defense and Bard would be a very good rental option for closer. With FO dragging their feet trying to low ball OAK for Montas, now they have to reverse their attention to Marquez. A Marquez & Bard trade would be reasonable, sooner FO finalize a trade the better.

Is Defense Part of the Twins’ Problem?
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree with you that defense wins you games & championships but I don't trust the stats that says Correa is bad or Miranda is better than Urshella or our team defense is bad. Donaldson is better than Urshella but you can't trust Donaldson to play that many games so overall our defense is better at 3B. Every position is about the same or better (except catching) than last year, especially when you look at depth. The depth at CF and SS is wonderful which gives us a chance to compete in every game. SS position took a hit when Lewis went on the IL, my main criticism is not having Palacios up to be ready to sub CC and Polanco. They need to keep Arraez at 1B or DH, 2B is where he played more often but is his worse position because he lacks the range. Catching is even harder to evaluate because of the different aspect of the position and this is where my other critique lies. Sanchez has made some improvement in basic catching but in general, pitchers do much better with Jeffers than Sanchez. Gray does not want Sanchez, Jeffers is Ryans preferred catcher, Archer's ERA with Jeffers is under 2.00 where with Sanchez is over 6.00. Bundy pitched well with Jeffers last night, Sanchez catching should be limited, Smeltzer pitched well with Sanchez so he could relieve Jeffers when Smeltzer's turn or when PHing. I think it strange that where the article states where we have a problem, I don't see and where it states where we have no problem, I see we do.- 67 replies

Jose Miranda Deserves a Shot
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like Miranda, he could have some time at 2B (his preference position), maybe DH, 1B platoon, some time at 3B to spell Urshella. But to say Miranda deserves to take time away time from proven veterans , I don't think so. Does Miranda need to play more? the answer is yes. But in a year where we have a good chance to go to the post season we can't give rookie experience just to do so. Miranda's extensive playing time should be in AAA. Sano will return sooner than we'd like, I'm afraid Miranda will be force down to AAA until FO figure out what to do wilh Sano. -

I wasn't surprized by the win, I was expecting a sweep. Funny thing when the offense didn't show up ( CC 3 for 5 to no avail) we win the game. With unexpected heroes like Smith, wiggled out of a nail biter; Gordon, hitting his 2nd HR and Smeltzer pitching 6 scoreless innings. Of course Duran pitched his usual good game and Thielbar didn't blow the game but these 3 stuck out. Defense also played into the game. It's a relief to have Gordon & Celestino available to cover CF when Buck is resting. The gap is no longer that big which gives us an opportunity to win w/o Buck in CF. Smeltzer came into the game strong only pitching 4 innings his prior game. Again I'll state, if Smeltzer was brought up from the start, together with Winder and used extensively at long relief & spot relief our pitching situation would be so much better.

A Lot of Mocks, A Lot of Directions

I like Neto better than the others mentioned. I'd still like a catcher especially if Parada could be available. Definitely not another bat 1st no glove type. -
Royce Lewis Had ACL Surgery With a Twist
Doctor Gast replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great job Lucas! That extra stability gives us added hope that he can come back better than ever. -
Great to see Jeffers bunt. Since 2019 we have been slow to adjust to the dead ball, Small ball (bunting, SBs, etc) mentality is needed. These last 2 games I expected the Twins to win. Our offense is much better than theirs which proved itself against an elite pitching SP & RPs by scoring a bunch of runs. The difference is our SPs and RPs are over used and we need an extra closer. I predicted this from the beginning of the year when they started to rely heavily on short relief and they traded away Rogers. It's easy to predict because it happens every year. Management ignoring long relief, over rely on short relief, thus run them down, to compensate they then over extend the rotation then running them down which produces ineffiency and injuries. Injuries isn't neccessarily bad luck, it's bad management. We have a great team and we have pretty good pitching if they are handled properly. We still need a closer and now we a long reliever to help relieve the rotation and short relief. And it doesn't hurt to get a front line pitcher to help us get to and advance in the post season. If we don't do something now and try to better this team don't ever think we'll ever do anything.

I'm for small ball too. Bunting, stealing bases, going the other way, hit & run are much more exciting than striking out, FOs and even the infrequent moon blast.
-
Well reported Jamie. Ryan isn't 100% that resulted in some early runs but it was great to see him go out there and SO the side in his final innning, This was a winnable game that should have been won, and hurt losing. Pagan has put in some good performances this year but he hasn't proven to us that he can come in a close and big game and w/o a doubt shut down the competion. I wish FO will stop showcasing Pagan to try to make him look good. I get it that we really don't have anyone beside Duran to come in and that is why I'm really missing Rogers. I was totally against the Rogers/ Paddack trade, FO told CC that we were in a competing mode. So why trade away our only dependable closer? it doesn't make sense. Maybe eventually Pagan will become that closer we need but we don't need him next year we need him right now. Rogers has helped SD to be competive, right now we are hurting and FO needs to find some one like Rogers to help us to get to and advance in the play offs. To end on a positive note. Arraez is producing like an all-star he should be voted in as one.

3 Impacts of the 13-Pitcher Roster Limit
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree reducing the # of short RPs shouldn't be a problem for the normal person but for a analyst freak it will drive them abosolutely crazy because they are so heavily reliant on short relief and with one less short RP they'll have to be even more reliant on the remanant short RPs. And with the recent problems of Duffy, Thielbar, Smith and Pagan, Baldelli would have to pitch them more often. One solution you mentioned was to extend the rotation. Even with 14 pitchers, Baldelli has been over reliance on the short RPs and he has been extending the rotation to compensate. This has resulted in our SPs and our only long RP to go on the IL or have tired arms which leads to ineffective outings. The best solution is to establish & rely on long relief especially now. Ignoring long relief causes a snow ball effect. Over use of short relief, to compensate you over use the rotation, then deplete your long relief (eliminating your solution) then you have tired arms which produces injuries which constantly shrink your quality pitching pool. With fewer quality pitchers, you further stretch them until you have almost no one. We need some long RPs right now to pitch long, Maybe extend Jax a little bit more to 3 innings and maybe trade for some one (Sands isn't ready yet). With SPs comiing off IL we can't think about extending them, we need to gradually work them in. We needed to have a well balance and rythm of rotation, long relief and short relief to keep all arms strong, fresh and effective. Ignoring long relief has produce this crises, continue to do so will be disasterous.- 23 replies

Twins Tidbit: Where have the Stolen Bases Gone?
Doctor Gast replied to TwinsData's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agree, injury is the top reason and 2nd is that it seems that maybe they aren't teaching them how to steal. I've seen too many times with runners on 3B & 1B with 0-1 outs and they don't send runner at 1B. In the past that was a given. To me that's really sad, we have fast runners. Why not teach & have our runners steal bases? IMO it makes the game more exciting and it shakes up the pitchers. -

The Truth About Catchers, Framing, and Deception
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Today we don't have robo umps so framing is a legit & positive quality for a catcher to evaluate them. If the catcher does a good job framing against a batter like Walker, the result is a SO. If a catcher does a bad job framing against a batter like Walker, the pitcher have to lay in a strike, the result is a HR. As I've been saying Jeffers handles our pitchers sooooo much better than Sanchez. Sanchez has improved defensively and he can hit better than Jeffers but I'd still like Jeffers have the lion's share of the catching duties and keep him out of DHing. Let Sanchez DH and come in to catch via PHing but limit his catching. -
4 Veteran Players the Twins Can Trade
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree with prior comments, we can't trade CC and get anyone close to him. We can't any of these in a trade with OAK because outlook is rebuild with prospects, But we can trade with a team that wants to compete and is strong in one area but weak in another, teams like MIA, TB or AR could be tarkets. MIA who's very strong in pitching IMO makes them very good targets. We can still trade w/ OAK and IMO makes the most sense but prospects and players with high availibity will come into play. Veterans are traded more in the off season.- 62 replies

Ryan Jeffers is Secretly Turning a Corner
Doctor Gast replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You are encouraged by the stats that Jeffers has a better feeling of the strike zone and is walking more often, the same thing could be said about Sano'. Like Sano', Jeffers has picked up some bad hitting mechanics which he strikes out too often, worse contact and has a lot of FOs. I'd still pick Jeffers to catch rather than Sanchez. Gray solely uses Jeffers, Jeffers is Ryan's main catcher and Archer's ERA is under 2.00 with Jeffers and over 6.00 with Sanchez. Jeffers although not perfect still handles the pitchers so much better than Sanchez. I'd like to see Jeffers to start every game at catching and not used at all at DH. And Sanchez brought in to catch only to PH in specific conditions. -
Kirilloff is back up; Polanco to IL as Twins go to Phoenix
Doctor Gast commented on BigJoeGun's blog entry in Twins Nation Podcast
With Polanco & Lewis down and their phylosophy of resting CC, IMO they need very much to bring up Palacios, Palacios played all over when Lewis was at AAA. We really need his glove and get his bat accustumed to MLB pitching now and in the future. -
Thanks Peter, great article. You give us a great selection of RPs to look at, any one of those would be a good choice. IMO we could use a RP or 2 right now, Cubs could be the most willing to trade so Robertson is a good choice. It's hard to say about MIA & CO, they never know what they want to do. They'd like to compete but they can't commit to it and yet they are hesitant to retool. I'd definitely like to get a proven closer and if our problem persists w/ injuries a long relief would be very nice for us to compete.

Did my heart well to see hitters hitting the ball all over the field and scoring runs. Last year I advocated that we needed to get out of the moonblast mentality and go for more solid contact and going the other way if need be to reduce our SOs & FOs, Stated that baseball is a game of of adjustments, that the pitchers and defenses have adjusted and the hitters needed to adjust to them and the live ball become dead. And I was lambasted saying that was old school & get with the program, that's how things are done. Another take away is Bundy does well with a fresh arm, 3 extra days off did wonders for his effeciency. This article stated that Wes goal is try to get his SPs to pitch as long as they can. Although it's the great majority concensus, again I think it's the wrong one. Bundy can be a pretty effecient pitcher but if he's stretched he'll be terrible, Bundy's arm doesn't bounce back that quicky if he's over-extended w/o extended rest. That said, I don't think it was a good idea to have Bundy to pitch 8 innings (eventhough he could) and come back to pitch on a normal rest.
