Kenta Maeda's Discouraging Spring
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Maeda's elbow is fine, that's not the problem. Maeda has always had the stuff but not the arm so he's limited in how many innings he can pitch & how fast he can throw. That's part of the reason why LAD put him in the pen to gain extra velo. For the Twins, '20 was the perfect storm for Maeda. For someone who doesn't have the velo, control has more importance. Pitchers coming back from TJ, control is their biggest hurdle. Plus 1 &1/2 years absence, there's a lot of rust. Also with control problems you get behind, then you slow down & serve a meatball over the plate. What's the best solution? Should he be put in the BP? Should he be sent down to AAA? One solution IMO isn't placing him in the rotation waiting for him to find himself, which could take quite awhile.- 36 replies

Edgar Quero- A Catching Prospect Target
Doctor Gast commented on Doctor Gast's blog entry in Doctor Gast's Blog
For a college catcher draftee to be MLB in 2 yrs., he needs to be elite. And there's no elite catchers available in this draft. And 2 yrs after the draft, Vazquez will be gone. That leaves one year of Jeffers and hopefully a rookie catcher flying blind makes for a highly inferior back-stop -
Willi Castro is by far my vote. He's a handy INF glove, a switch hitter who's bat is starting to click. Someone we really need if Polanco is held up.

2023 Prospect Previews: The Best of the Rest
Doctor Gast replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I was hoping you'd tell me. As I've stated before my main focus is catching. Since it'd be very unlikely to find an elite catcher the 1st round. Then I'd try to find the next best thing the next selection. There's a couple that we could find, Kyle Teal (Virginia) & Cole Carrigg (SD State). Getting any deeper waters, I have to admit I'm lost. The only possible name I could throw out there is Brandon Sproat RHP (Florida) maybe available 3rd round most likely 2nd. Gophers Klassen may be a surprise. 1st round note, some are disappointed with Chase Dollander's performance & his stock has fallen some to some. He could come available to the Twins if the Twins are interested. Also Wyatt Lanford is injured, IDK if that could dim his shine.- 13 replies

On Trading Caleb Thielbar and 70s Game Shows
Doctor Gast replied to Hans Birkeland's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What makes TB so good at this is that they have great player evaluations. When a players become over-hyped they know it & capitalize on it (and they're able to remove emotion from the equation). IMO KC doesn't have that great player evaluations, they just hope. We didn't trade Polanco because he's been vital to the team. He has always bounced back from all physical abuse he has suffered. This time it has taken longer, but hopefully he will be 100% & mash soon. Then being healthy, his value will be up there and the great prospects coming up he'll then be available for trade considerations. Now with Thielbar, is he someone who we'd go after to help us compete this year? My answer would be yes. So why would I want to trade him? At this point, we need him, so I'd not trade him unless we have a couple of rookies that can push him out. -
Twins 2023 Position Analysis: Relief Pitcher
Doctor Gast replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like our steady Duran, Jax and Thielbar. Our questionable J Lo & Alcala have looked pretty good lately. That group can do a great job anchoring the BP. The prove me RP, Pagan has yet proven anything except that maybe he's a lost cause. IMO SPs Maeda, Mahle & Ober should be limited pitches. Which should open up a long relief position. My definition of long relief is the extension of the rotation to where the past SP use to pitch. That the focus of a long RP is to win the game not to hold or to save the game. Therefore let's say Maeda or Ober could pitch in the long relief role. Any mop up games should be delegated to Pagan. Ober really wants to break with the team and he deserves to. With him or Maeda as long RP would open up that opportunity instead of another short RP on the active roster.- 47 replies

Ranking the Twins Top-5 Hit Tool Prospects: 2023
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Pretty tough to settle for 5. Projections are projections, that's all they are. Until they start establishing & putting up some numbers. Lee, Martin and Julien have done that plus are OB machines. It nice to dream about players like De Andrades & Acuna in what they are capable to do.- 14 replies

Royce Lewis is Ready to Rock
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great to have some good news. Royce Lewis is such a great asset to this team all the way around. Pray for a speedy healthy return. -
A good ball player who loves the game will want to play no matter what. Polanco is that type of player. If he's hobbling, he'll still go out there if he's sent. From a spectator's view, I could tell he was hurt & it affected his performance. Those who's responsible should have seen it right away & shut him down. Polanco has not had recurring tendonitis in his knee. This tendonitis is due to the injury he suffered last season. I'm not a professional but an injury like this needs rest along with treatment to limit the inflammation to the injured tendon & reoccurrence. If not rested or treated properly right away and constantly aggravated the damage will be greater which delays recovery and more risk of reoccurrence. I am shocked that Polanco's knee hasn't recovered 100% yet. Which makes me wonder if there's something worse might have occurred thru the added abuse.

Twins 2023 Position Analysis: Starting Pitcher
Doctor Gast replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Totally agree with you Nick, that we have a great rotation. Although we have a great rotation, IMO I had 3 question marks in how Ober, Mahle & Maeda were going to pan out. Ober because of his stamina as a rookie (which affected in injuries), Mahle because his shoulder side lined him and Maeda because of his absence from the game & effects from TJ (like control problems). Yet all 3 are very good pitchers. In ST, Ober has been great, but how much can his arm take? Mahle's velo has been up & down and Maeda lacked control & gave up some HRs. Looking ahead to start the '23 season, I see limiting all 3 SPs innings and ramping up all 3 slowly. Of the 3, Ober has pitched the best and it'd be a shame to send Ober back down to AAA. IMO a 6-man rotation is not the answer. So what's the answer? My solution is a 5-man rotation, having a long RP that pitches at least 3 innings on a regular basis. That SP will be stretching out as a long RP, ready to do some spot starting when the opportunity arises. Winder did that last year (with success), although he wasn't used very well there and when he entered the starting rotation he was over-stretched. So who should be that long RP? Ideally with less disturbance it should be Ober, but if he can't then the lot falls on Maeda because he has experience there. IMO the one that has this role as long RP, will be to his advantage. Because he'll be put in more opportunities to win games, thus more opportunities to accumulate wins. Which is still considered as important.- 42 replies

"Polanco had a compression sleeve on his left knee and a noticeable limp as he walked back to Hammond Stadium." A very bad picture When Polanco was hurt last season with his knee, we heard nothing. They kept on playing him, although to many of us he was playing hurt. All this could have been avoided if they used common sense and rested him (a must for tendonitis) while treating it. Now Polanco has to pay for their negligence. We have a lot of options but none that can really replace him right now. He's very valuable to us, if he delays coming back & shows some long term problems; the team will be out a lot money because of another management's folly.

Twins 2023 Position Analysis: Designated Hitter
Doctor Gast replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The one thing we have are a lot of bats. In response to Rogers challenge, with the focus on rest, I'm going to wager a guess of 12 or even 13 at DH. Buxton, Polanco & Kiriloff will see the most the most games to begin the season. If both Kiriloff & Polanco is missing then we'll see more of Larnach & Gordon at DH against RHPs.- 21 replies

It'd be a shame if Ober wasn't on the active roster when the team breaks camp. IMO Maeda & Mahle are questionable in how far they can go into a game in the beginning. So long relief is a must. Ideally Ober could fill the bill. but he hasn't been tried yet how he fares coming in after the start of the game. So until then, Maeda is the logical choice for long relief. I agree with Flying Finn that Gordon should get the RHPs Polanco's ABs at 2B if Polanco is held back (hope Polanco get's well & makes it in the opening line-up).

Edgar Quero- A Catching Prospect Target
Doctor Gast commented on Doctor Gast's blog entry in Doctor Gast's Blog
MLB ranking of the teams top prospects IMO is based mainly on potential, where where they were pick has a lot of sway. where we see Twin's Prielipp as #4 before he even threw a professional game. But as far as trade value IMO is concerned is based more on production, how established and hype (league chatter). So prospect ranking doesn't always equate to trade value, Our #4 Prielipp & #5 Wallner combined (13.2) would be less than Quero (14.9), according to BTV. While our #3 Rodriguez (22.7) #15 Julien (19.2) is considerably more. So I wouldn't trade either of them 1:1. I believe PIT always thought that Endy Rodriguez had potential. But their main focus has been Henry Davis whom they invested their #1 overall pick. Although of Rodriguez's talent the main idea has been he'd have him to play another position because of Davis. This time last year Rodriguez was low on PIT top prospect list. Throughout '22 he kept establishing himself from high A to AAA which increased the hype to where he's very expensive. I believe Quero will start at high A, so he hasn't really established himself yet and the hype has only begun. Last Feb. 3, I put in a trade for Quero, his value was 9.2 it has increased 33% since then. So that's why I'd like a trade as soon as possible. No doubt LAA think that Quero is special but he's blocked and he could be some time before he's MLB ready. Like the discussion here about LAA needs to be competitive now. So if we have any missing pieces for LAA to be so, we need to explore this avenue. -
The Night Luis Arraez Blew Up Baseball
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks Ted, wished I was there, it must 've been a tremendous experience. Latinos & Orientals love our great American sport. Too bad it's dying here. Hope Minnesotans could catch the fever when we enter the post season. Very happy that Arraez had a great night. And wish him well in MIA because he seems to like the stadium.- 41 replies

I believe so. Correa is a discipline hitter. Every hitter get out of sync & it's the hitter responsibility to get back in sync. He went to Popkins & he helped to clean up his swing. Same with Gallo, he cleaned up his swing but the league is trying to get around the shift ban which could hinder his comeback. That's what the game is all about, adjusting & perfecting your swing. Too bad Sano never took hold of that.

Edgar Quero- A Catching Prospect Target
Doctor Gast commented on Doctor Gast's blog entry in Doctor Gast's Blog
Good question terrydactyls. Like I said that they have O'Hoppe which makes Quero available. So we need to know what LAA's needs are to compensate them. LAA although they have O'Hoppe but he's basically a rookie this year and they don't have a very good catcher to tandem with him. So they might like Jeffers plus Henriquez. Or they could use a LH bat OF like Kepler (his stock is rising) with maybe Paddack. It seems like LAA always need pitching so we could trade maybe Mahle straight up (less likely) or Winder & Paddack. These are some example of trade that could be offered assuming they are planning to compete. -
I'm Drinking the Twins' Kool-Aid
Doctor Gast replied to Adam Neisen's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm excited about the transactions that have done this off season. And I like the slogan of "inspired by the past; built for the future,". We've never had a successful post season w/o the pinstripes. I'm not crazy about the uniforms but I don't care as long as they include pinstripes. Because you can't have a winning attitude & tradition w/o them, the others are a waste of time & $. They need to focus more on our winning past to establish a foundation of our future winning. Many young people have no ideas what a winning post season looks like. Living in Brazil, I don't go to many games anymore. The last game I went to was in '21, I was very disappointed. Not only that we lost to DET but also the people around me were disconnected to the game. The young people spent all their time on their cellphones. So I think Tik Tok does very little in sparking interest in the game (although it might support what's there.) Baseball is a family sport. I came to love baseball by watching the Twins with my Dad. Baseball tournaments were family events. I believe that's how many of us got involved. If you want to spark interest in the Twins with the young people you need to promote Family night, Big Brothers events and make watching Twins more assessible on TV. IMO the disinterest in baseball is due to the family break down that & less accessibility To many Americans the WBC is nothing. But to many Latin American & Oriental teams, they go crazy over these games. They aren't concerned about their cellphone when they're at the games. They are totally in the game, and it's refreshing to see. -
Is Jeff Hoffman an Opening Day Bullpen Option?
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was all in for putting him in AAA, until we need him. But with those early opt outs, IMO the Twins will not look at his record but look at his stuff and sign him. Much like Pagan.- 21 replies

Edgar Quero- A Catching Prospect Target
Doctor Gast commented on Doctor Gast's blog entry in Doctor Gast's Blog
It seems to me that there have been large group of pretty good catchers out there. Composed of starters, younger starters, MLB ready prospects & prospects; many have 2 or 3 in their system. Last year we had none. Now we got Vazquez with Jeffers and nobody in the wings. After Vazquez is gone, we have Jeffers (which I've not seen him as a starter) for 1 year. IMO we are wasting our time of Vazquez mentoring on Jeffers. My point we need someone who can step in & do great for years after Vazquez leaves, which isn't Jeffers. So we need a very good soon to be MLB catching prospect last year. The longer we wait to get someone, the worse we'll be sitting coming '26. -
I can see all 4 have a plus performance this year. I can also see Gallo, Gray & Mahle be offered QOs. If all 3 except fine if they reject also fine. I agree that Maeda won't be offered an QO, and if anyone would offer a good trade for him before the deadline they should take it.

It's good to see Kiriloff & Lewis getting in some good swings. It's trying of my patience to see Buxton & Polanco taken so slowly. But I guess we have to trust the "plan". I'm excited about the pitching, the BP as well the rotation. I imagine that Ryan is still working out his new pitches.
