    Kurt Suzuki - 16 years in the majors with 6 clubs. Not that he doesn't belong, but the fact that this guy can continue to find Major League work at 39 says something about the thinness of the player pool. A lot of guys (Jason Castro) on that list are pretty long in the tooth, particularly for the catching role. Hip and knee orthopedic specialists, take note!

    A few weeks ago, Gordon was hitting in the .270s vs LHP and also had some impressive RISP stats. These have tailed off somewhat since then, to the point where Garlick is 30 points above him in vs LHP slash line. So it was the right call, but can't blame Gordon for wanting the opportunity. Gordon is certainly farther inside the circle of trust than many Twins hitters right now, recent accomplishments notwithstanding.

    Loved the rally, late though it was. The rest? Meh... It's not Jake Cave's fault the lineup is so hurt we can't find an outfielder with a better plate approach (where's Rob Refsnyder when you need him?). The dogs in the street know he's not The Guy, and he probably also understands his career ends at AAA, but we still find ourselves silently pleading that he'll realize he needs to make fundamental changes against big league pitching. The whole of Twins Territory cringed after Urshela walked. What odds could you get in Vegas tonight that the Twins will score four or more tomorrow...?

    Abysmal at-bats. Boos from the stands on Kepler's strikeout in the bottom of the 8th. Poor hitting has lurked as an issue for over a season, and now that pitching issues are addressed, it is clear that this is the other major problem holding the team back. Upcoming matches with HOU and NYY will provide opportunities for these guys to learn a better plate approach by watching how real pennant contenders do it.

    The quality of the opponent has much to do with the quality of the outcome, but if the Twins can remember to do all of the little things they've done the past two nights against real contenders, they might be able to do some contending themselves.

    Well, it's 10 HR over 41 and a third, but it sure as hell feels like it. ? Twins fans should be glad he's here, and at 65 pitches, they should clamor for a sixth inning. This bullpen does not have enough talent in it to get 12 outs every damn day.

    Clear demonstration of the difference between a team that is a playoff contender and one that is not. To beat a club like that, it is essential to learn how to hit their pitching. Keeping those bats running around in the field to tire them out is the only way to keep them from feasting on our pitching. See you tomorrow.

    Not to say that there aren't pitching holes to fill if this club wants to win playoff games, but most teams can win a game in which their pitchers allow only three runs. That said, the current staff, and the manner in which their work is managed, simply will not do. Teams that regularly fail to score runs also will not win playoff games. Twins stats in the last five games against two contending National League clubs: 4/30 (.133) 7/33 (.212) 0-4 RISP, 5 LOB 9/34 (.264) 12/37 (.444) 3-8 RISP, 4 LOB 5/31 (.161) 6/32 (.187) 0-7 RISP, 4 LOB 7/35 (.200) 9/37 (.243) 2-7 RISP, 6 LOB 7/33 (.212) 13/39 (.333) 2-9 RISP, 6 LOB BA: .196 OBP: .264 20 total runs over this stretch (season average is 4.53/game). They could have gone home 3 - 5 with just two more hits. Even the dogs in the street know that this will not get it done, which is why the fan base is angry. In this sense, this year's improved squad is far more frustrating than last year's collection of losers. Oh, and yes, it really hurts to lose a series to a squad that regularly suits up in uniforms that look like they came from an ice cream shop. Pistachio caps!
