    Agreed. Looked much more like a playoff contending team tonight. Keep the bats warm, roll the videotape of all the missed chances for outs today, and set up tomorrow's pre-game drills. Lucky we weren't hurt worse by those misses.

    Here are the team's season-to-date platoon splits. What they tell us is that we need a RHB who eats LHP for lunch. Gleeman and the Geek address this topic regularly (including in their recent trade evaluation) if you would like more depth.

    Tough call there, as neither he, nor Clemens nor Lewis are outstanding at the position. The durability of Arraez' legs has apparently improved from where it was in his later years with the Twins. Here are his defensive stats (Baseball Reference, may not include tonight's numbers) compared to Clemens (OBP .292, SLG .474) and Lewis (OBP .308, SLG .418). To be clear, my pick for a righty addition would have been Randy Arozarena.

    Nobody said he's worthless. I love him as a pure hitter, but the reasons the team traded him away a few years ago are the same reasons they didn't trade for him now.

    Yeah, his OBP is back up, but just no pop, and no place for him on defense.

    It would be a shame if the acquisition of four quality pitchers is overshadowed by the failure to trade for a right-handed bat. Let's hope we see more manufactured runs like the one they created in the fourth inning. It won't be long before all the chances are spent...

    Stall warning light is on. Need to take the next two games at Kauffman or we are guaranteed to lose ground on the road trip. Likely a lot of ground as the next stop is Laverne & Shirley's hometown. Won't get any better coming home to face the Phillies and the Braves. First priority is hitting. A team that takes an early lead doesn't just put pressure on opponents' pitching and defense, it alters their game at the plate. Assuming the Twins have a pre-game plan for opposing pitchers, it is certainly not being executed well at present. "Hard hit" is not the only index for offensive success. On the pitching side, the most likely answer to Ryan's loss of command and velocity is rest. Give it to him whether he wants it or not. Rogers is showing that he now at the bottom of the left-handed pecking order. Defensively, it seems that the best we can hope for is incremental improvements. Let's hope the kids and the coaching staff keep taking those baby steps.
