    Most of the numbers say that this was not a bad offensive game, consistent with the "season beginning on 30 June." Two numbers, 2 R and 8 team LOB (all in scoring position, no less) deliver the sting of disappointment. It hurts to hit 5 (5!) two-baggers and still lose the game. Batting average, on base percentage and strikeout rate have all improved markedly today and for the eight days since the miserable 82-game first half. Under normal circumstances, we'd be pretty happy going 5-3 (extra-inning loss excepted), but the fact that the club had to climb out of a 2-game-under hole leaves most of us feeling... meh!

    Easily the worst game since the "season began." Fortunately, the K rate was relatively low in spite of the weak hitting. Gotta feel for Buck. The man is due in a big way.

    Because outfielders sprint on nearly every batted ball. Can we stop now? The club says he is not in shape to play outfield. Why should that statement be suspect?

    Please do not omit the 6 BB. Today's OBP was still .324 even though BA was .185. 9Ks not great, but K rate is decidedly down since 30 June. We shall see if this trend continues. This club amassed 838 strikeouts in the first 82 games (10.2).

    See what happens when pitchers get run support? Makes winning much less hard work. So far over six games, the promise has been kept.

    Easily the best offensive performance by the Twins since the 9 - 4 win over the Blue Jays on 10 June. Refreshing number of hard hit balls. Appears to renew the promise that the season has started.

    That might be one of the most profound and damning statements about the state of the Twins I've read on Twins Daily ever. In the same boat. If I were shopping today, I'd only be looking at pitchers' names. My 2019 vintage Kepler jersey no longer has any shine. I've been hoodwinked.

    Is something rotten in the state of Minnesota? By now most people are tired of conspiracy theories, but that doesn't mean the Black Sox were not real. Sports gambling is on the rise, and the consistently poor performance of a lineup that ought to do better is starting to look suspicious. Perhaps we need to prove that the Twins lame effort really is a combination of age, injury, overthinking, carelessness and/or lack of talent. They may just all be bad at the same time, and that certainly isn't the worst reason for so many batters to be watching pitches in the happy zone sail past them.

    As much as it is tempting to blame Pagan, the bottom of the 7th would have ended without another run scored if Gray had moved to cover first on Harris' hit into the 3 - 4 hole. No telling how things might have played out after that. It was bang-bang, but that defensive reaction needs to be instinctive.

    We can certainly hope! Yeah, but it certainly doesn't indicate any kind of positive direction or maturation. There is so much to be hopeful for in this squad, and it is maddening to see brilliance one day, mediocrity the next, and a train wreck the day after that.

    The Twins’ belief in Kepler continues to prove misguided after he returned from the injured list to go 3-for-26 with seven strikeouts and zero walks. With Wallner crushing at Triple-A and Trevor Larnach on the mend from pneumonia, it’s worth wondering just how long the Twins will let this ineptitude happen. Kepler is not under team control beyond this season with a $10M club option (and $1M buyout) left on his extension. He's a corner outfielder hitting .192 with a 76 wRC+ in 140 plate appearances. In any other circumstance, a DFA would seem likely. Given how the Twins have stuck by Kepler, though, that seems improbable. Repeating my comment from the Sunday game summary here:

    Could we re-wind the tapes on past seasons back to a point where Max Kepler still has options? Is it that he's reached the limit of his ability and he really can't put the barrel on the ball anymore, or does he not realize that not just the ball club, but the game is about to pass him by? It would be nice to learn that there is a better explanation for these kinds of performances than the two above, but right now it just looks like we're headed for a sad parting. ☹️

    Strongest case I've see lately for the softball-style first base on both sides of the foul line. I almost puke watching the replays of Lewis's neck bending in that horrifying somersault.

    Ummmm, because he wants to test the market? But seriously, if the Twins were trying to engage Gray in extension talks right now, they certainly wouldn't be talking about it, and _we_ would be the very last people to know.
