  1. Statistically, the Twins are hitting and getting on base at a much more frequent clip than before. With today's win against the Guardians in the books, BA (.257) over last 50 games is 26 bps higher than it was after 82 games on 29 June. Likewise, OBP (.321) is up 14 bps.
  2. That assessment might be a tad over-dramatic since the team has posted just a 28-21 record since that team meeting. They could easily be at 31 - 18 for that stretch had they not suffered some breakdowns along the way. Cross-posting from that forum thread, "there has been a significant incremental improvement in offensive output, with some latent weaknesses still unaddressed. Objectively, there has been a positive change that is reflected in the win-loss record, but it would be a stretch to say we've been in a new season since 30 June. "What we can say is that the Twins are holding their own, giving somewhat better than they get, and the possibility of at lease two post-season home games is increasing by the day."
  3. Twenty eight days and 25 games later, the numbers haven't changed all that much. Runs per game just over 5 Team batting average and on-base improvements at the same level as a month ago No improvement in strikeout rate In short, there has been a significant incremental improvement in offensive output, with some latent weaknesses still unaddressed. Objectively, there has been a positive change that is reflected in the win-loss record, but it would be a stretch to say we've been in a new season since 30 June. What we can say is that the Twins are holding their own, giving somewhat better than they get, and the possibility of at least two post-season home games is increasing by the day.
  4. Feels like we've been waiting for that sixth inning all season. My goodness. Are we done being (the wrong kind of) streaky?
  5. Yes. Yesterday's "single" illustrates why. The guy mashes every ball he connects with. All or nothing.
  6. His "single" was nearly a home run. Couldn't be a double because it reached the wall so fast and bounced back to the fielder.
  7. Would you rather Annie called your name on the double plays, or his name on the 2-RBI single?
  8. And yet he drives in the tying and go-ahead runs, and anchors the infield behind Keuchel, hovering up those ground ball outs.
  9. He _might_ also get a bigger offer to play in Japan again to close his career, a la Kikuchi and numerous others.
  10. The usage of -kun suffix for boys and young men is correct, but the nickname is indeed "Maeken," as in short for Maeda Kenta (前田 健太 -> マエケン). Japanese do this a lot - they take a few syllables out of a name for something and run words together. For example, one of my favorites is "promane" for "project management."
  11. It's easy to come up with a list of pitchers who successfully continued their careers past 35. They share many of the qualities Maeda has in spades.
  12. Nice to see the hitters run roughshod over the starter (inexperience notwithstanding) and roger the bullpen (save Sewald). Gallen will be a much bigger challenge tomorrow. At least he's a righty. Fortunately, the big arms in the 'pen got the day off - they may be needed tomorrow if Keuchel gets "snakebit." The late innings took some of the shine off the game. The league needs a mercy rule. Painful to watch poor Carson Kelly have to throw 60mph spitwads that just added two unneeded runs. Worse than 'garbage time' in the NBA. Watching Moran walk 3 batters in the 9th was even more painful. Surely he was coached to just throw strikes and let the fielders collect the outs, yet he literally 'could not hit water.' Perhaps Maeda could sit down with Moran for a few days and have a conversation about the importance of location. Tip: Minnesota fans will flatter Maeda if they start calling him, "Maeken (Mah-eh-ken)," for short. This was the pet name folks in Hiroshima gave him.
  13. Silver lining: If your bats are going to desert you, it might as well be the day your pitcher blows up, Or vice versa. 😐
  14. Don't forget - when another club signs a free agent who refuses a qualifying offer, the player's previous club gets a draft pick.
  15. Who knows how far the Twins could go in an FY23 postseason? Who knew (really!) in 1987? One thing we do know - post season chances are precious and one that is (nearly) in the hand ought not to be swapped for a potentially better chance in the bush. Too many things can happen along the way. Live - and play - for now. No doubt there are trades out there for these two pitchers that makes sense, but not many, and practically none for prospects. Those trades happen after the last out of the year.
  16. Good enough to likely win the Division. Stick around, see how they take it from here.
  17. True, But every club gets swept a few times a season, and sometimes very unexpectedly. We cannot judge a _whole_ season by three games, nor even by 25 games. Offensively, however, something is clearly different. There is much more fun to be had in the 55 remaining games before we know if we're playoff bound or a bust. Enjoy the ride.
