There is only one scenario where I would trade Lewis at this point. And that would be if we were to sign Story to a 4+ year contract. We would then have our good hit SS for the foreseeable future. If that were the case I would consider packaging Lewis for multi-year team control SP. But I would not trade both Lewis and Martin. These guys are still just 22 years old, and both have high up side major league talent. And even as young as they are, I believe they are both pretty close to ready. But if we were to sign Story and trade for top of the rotation SP, that would show we are serious about competing. And that's all I really ask for.

Ok, now let's sign a bunting coach and beat the shift back to regular defensive positions.

Former Twins Cooperstown Case: AJ Pierzynski
Heiny replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If Pierzynski gets more than a one and done, then Mauer is a shoe-in. I think Mauer will get in eventually, but he will have to wait a few years. Sorry A.J. I liked you as a player, just not HOF caliber. -
Tony Oliva, Jim Kaat Elected to the Hall of Fame
Heiny replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hallelujah. This was disgustingly long overdue. Congrats to two of my favorite all-time Twins. A little help from my historian friends out there: My first Twins game, I got to go with some family friends to Met Stadium. IIRC it was 1970. It was supposed to be a double-header against (I believe the Milwaukee Brewers). We drove 4 hours to get there. Twins were behind (I believe 5-4 after 5 innings in game one.) Then came the rain. Game was called. Second game cancelled. I was an extremely disappointed little boy. But it was an early part of a lifelong fandom. Can anyone tell me the date of that game and maybe where I can find the lineups and box score. I would be very grateful. Edit: Well, I have been searching all day, and can't find anything resembling my memory of this day. Granted, I was very young, but I'm starting to think I may have been lied to and we just left when the game got postponed due to rain. -
I agree with TopGun#22 1000%. I think that would be the perfect scenario. So, there is no way it could ever happen. LOL.

How Will the Twins use Dylan Bundy?
Heiny replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think maybe the FO is hesitant to trade prospects for one or two year contracts of proven pitchers due to past losses, for example Ryan Pressley. It seemed to be a pretty good trade at the time, but after the trade, Pressley really took off. And the FO was widely criticized. So, how do you know? I do believe that we have a plethora of good prospects that we could afford to deal a few and actually need to. Especially since we were not able to sign any top free agents. But hey, I guess there may be a reason they don't pay me to make decisions. (They probably should though.) -
Local Man Angrier at Millionaires than Billionaires
Heiny replied to RandBalls Stu's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks for the ridiculous article. I'm not sure if I should take this as a real story or something made up in jest. Personally, I'm disgusted by both sides. Millionaires vs. Billionaires who can't figure out how to divvy up multi-billions of dollars. There is no reason the new CBA should not have been hammered out before it gets to this point. The only people hurt by lockouts and strikes are the fans. Because you know when it's all said and done both sides will still be millionaires and billionaires. After the '94' cancellation of the WS, I was so disgusted, it took me over two years to get back to watching MLB. Eventually, I came back because I love the game. But as I get older, I can take more enjoyment from town ball. The disparity in the game is the real problem. Players making 600K/yr on the same field as players making 30 or 40M/yr? It's laughable. And teams like the Yankees and Dodgers able to spend double on players vs. the small market teams? To me this is grand stupidity. But even then, I can overlook it all when the umpire says: "Play Ball"! -
Baldelli: Pros/Cons and what I think about his future with the Twins
Heiny commented on cHawk's blog entry in cHawk’s Blog
I'm not a big fan of Baldelli. I believe he is a very smart baseball man, and that he is in tune with todays game, but I'm not a big fan of todays game either. I prefer more of a Tom Kelly style. Sound fundamentals, and more traditional style of play. Not a great interview, IMO, but great manager. Also liked Gardenhire. I like what CWS have done. Bringing back La Russa. Love baseball from my early days in the 60's and still do. Just don't like all the drastic changes in the game. Especially the extra runner in extra innings, and 7 inning double headers. Maybe a little too much analytics for my taste. Also I believe that bunting needs to be taught and practiced much more. To me, that is by far the best way of beating the infield shift. So, I could warm up to Baldelli, but please bring baseball back to baseball. -
So, correct me if I'm wrong, but if Buxton gets 625 PA every year and wins the MVP award every year, the Twins will pay him a total of 173.5 million dollars over the course of the contract. That would come to approximately 24.75M per year for a MVP winner 7 consecutive years. LOL. Team friendly you say. Oh yeah.

My Take On The Twins' Byron Buxton Conundrum
Heiny replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This whole topic has me wondering what the point is to MLB. Is it for the owners to make money? Is it for the players to make money? If the Twins have a payroll of $130M, how much money are they making? I doubt like hell that they are losing any money. What if they were to raise their payroll to $180M? Would they then be losing money? I doubt that too. How much have MLB team values increased over the last half dozen years? Money recouped. So, what is the point of MLB? I think it should be to win the world series. "Every year". That should be the goal. You try to sign the best players, which makes your product more desirable, which makes the fans want to spend more of their entertainment money on it. This is what the Yankees do. Yes, they have more money to spend due to market size, but they try to win the WS every year. Again, I doubt like heck that any MLB team is losing money. So, 'my point', sign Buxton, cuz he is a great player. The Yankees would sign him. Also spend some of those billions of dollars to sign some more of the top players. Try to win the World Series. Hey, if you try and it don't work out, well that should be the norm. At least you tried. But hey, I don't really believe that is the Twins goal. -
Twins roster for 2022. 1b - Kirilloff 2b - Gordon 3b- Miranda ss - Goodrum lf - Araez cf - Celstino rf - Larnach c - Jeffers backups, Cave, Rooker, Lewis, Rortvedt. SP - Ober, Ryan, Enlow, Balazovic, Winder. BP - doesn't really matter. Just throw some warm arms in there. That should save some money. And we can trade anybody that's left to rebuild our minor leagues.
-
MLB Trade Simulators is an imperfect tool but can give us a sniff of player values. Castillo’s is predictably hefty. According to the simulator, the Twins would need to part with Austin Martin, Royce Lewis, and Matt Canterino (or a package of similar value). If that is the cost, I would say "Hell No". I would rather start a complete rebuild. I want to see all three of these guys in Twins MLB uniforms someday soon. (Two years max?)
-
So, out of curiosity, what would a fair contract for Buxton be? (Throw out some opinions). I would say to offer 12 mil per/yr for 5 years guaranteed with $185,000 per game over 81 games to a max of 150 games played. Add a 1m bonus for making the all-star game (each year). This would give him 60m guaranteed over 5 years with games played at high production level to nearly double the total salary. Could that be turned down by any reasonably sane human being? Ok, blast away.

Sorry, I just have no faith in him. I cringe every time they show him warming up in the pen.

Would we rather have Gonzales back at the Utility/Everywhere role? No thanks. I like Arraez right where he is. Ok defense all over and much much better stick.

Twins 40-Man Roster Crunch? Perhaps Not
Heiny replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
However they have to work it, I don't want to risk losing Enlow at this point. And as far as Rooker goes, he seems to have good value as a DH, so if the Twins are going to lose him, I hope its through trade so that they at least get something for him. I still like his bat and think it will continue to get better and more consistent with more big league at bats. But through trade, I would think we would at least get a mid-level prospect in return.- 63 replies

Love the rankings and IMHO grading them is so speculative that I like reading everyone's opinions. I just wish that I could watch full minor league games occasionally(somewhere). Does anyone know of any online sites that stream full games either live or recorded?

If the Twins want to win???? I think it would take two of these pitchers. With our perceived strong minor league contingent as (much needed) depth, I would look at the Twins to be the far and away favorite in the Central. This would be extremely expensive, and I think a longshot to even get one, but, winning the division would sure ease some of the sting. Would also be more plausible if they could trade Donaldson in the off-season to lighten the load. The dreaming starts already in early Aug?

Agreed 100%. Why are players not taught to bunt anymore? To me, the game is not evolving, but instead regressing. Is it coaching, or has the approach to the game changed so much that it sometimes has me gagging? As a traditionalist growing up watching baseball in the 60's and 70's, I hate all the new and extreme rules changes, like 7 inning doubleheaders, and the baserunner to start extra innings. Getting as bad as Nascar. Getting back to Kepler, how about going back to the basics of hitting, bunting, walking. He will never be a Carew type, and he shouldn't. But he could be more of a Cuddyer type, which I think is reasonable.

How Much Can The Twins Spend This Offseason?
Heiny replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think most of us went into this season feeling real good about our roster. Well, that obviously didn't turn out as planned. But, I still like the looks of this roster, for the most part, on paper. I would like to see next years roster look something similar to this. C - Jeffers, Rortvedt with Garver being traded. 1b - Kirilloff/Sano with Sano possibly being traded. 2b - Polanco/Araez, 3b - Donaldson/Araez, SS - Simons/Gordon with hopes for Lewis. OF - Buxton, Larnach, Kirilloff, Kepler Sp - Berrios, Maeda, Pineda, (Ober/Balazovic/Duran/Canterino/Enlow), and a FA like a (Duffy/Strohman/ Gausman). Rp - Rogers, Duffy, Robles, Alcala, and go big on FA's with Hand, Rosenthal, Yates, Bradley. This is where we need to spend some money. I have no idea what this would bring the payroll to, but I'm thinking it could be do-able. (if we truly want to contend for a WS.) Am I delirious? -
