The Time for Alex Kirilloff is Now, or It's Never
Aerodeliria replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
His fielding is atrocious and this is really hurting his chances. I think his monstrous 'error' in the first inning against the Astros didn't sit well with anyone...despite the usual touting of the company line by the management. (Also, his response to his own fielding on that play was rather tepid, which probably didn't sit that well either.) His hitting will not matter much if he can't field because I doubt they are looking at him to become the DH.- 38 replies

We will see. Mark me as skeptical, but if his fastball has better movement, that will be the major step forward. I saw him pitch in the playoffs and was really not impressed by his fastball in particular. The Astros were sitting on his fastball and making very good contact. I would still rank him as a distanct 3rd in the rotation at this moment in time. (It sure would be nice to have Maeda in Twin Stripes, but those are just sour grapes I suppose.)

WAR! HAH! What is it good for?
Aerodeliria commented on Doctor Gast's blog entry in Doctor Gast's Blog
Defensive metrics are tough to calculate, so I think what you said has merit. Let's say for example, one catcher sees that a hitter is very anxious and aggressive at the plate, so he calls for a slider off the plate and the batter whiffs. Another catcher in the same situation does not realize this and so calls for a fastball and the hitter cranks a homerun to win the game. In a sense, the catcher has determined the outcome more than the pitcher, but that is almost impossible to measure. That is a simplistic example, but I think it demonstrates just one of the problems measuring defensive metrics. -
I also say thanks DG. It was a thoughtful post. I do not agree with everything, but I do believe that there is less emphasis on fundamental plays and players, which is troubling. Kirilloff's OLE at 1b in Game 3 against the Astros opened the floodgates--negating a sure double-play and put the Twins behind the 🎱.

Uhmm...gosh, more of nothing...or actually worse than that. Dodgers are smiling on this one. The potential for Miller is super high. If he can hit .230-.240 in the bigs, he's a SS for years. Hip-hip hurrah for the Twins management....At least they have been honest about gutting their own team. Detroit keeps looking better and better as the days pass. I wish I had been wrong about their direction, but they announced it, so you gotta believe.

Offseason Status Update: Polanco Out, Santana In
Aerodeliria replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I've held out on complaining about my disappointment in the Twins for several weeks, but it's getting late early. I'm still awaiting something even remotely significant to be done, Despite the grandiose announcements, so far, nothing has moved the needle. The Twins are treading water...at best.... DeSclafani...really? (With that said, Polanco had really nowhere to go, so I am not sure they could have done much better. Nevertheless. who is riskier considering cost versus potential, DeSclafani or Maeda?) Santana? I'm sorry, but it's hard not to expect significant regression... Staumont? It's a rescue case. It's hard to imagine him being better than Pagan (I'm not saying Pagan was worth the money, just that it's hard to believe Staumont is the answer.).... Duarte? He needs a strike zone as big as a barn door...(I confess that he could be fixed, but it is another hope upon hope project...) Securing one solid starter and someone who can man centerfield would cause me to do a mea culpa, but I'm not impressed to this point. (Of course, the probabilities that Buxton makes it a month without injuring himself (in CF or as a DH) are so low, they should not be counted on under any circumstances, so they have to get someone to play there.)- 21 replies

Nice back-door statement with excuses built in. This off-season has had a particularly irritating tone from upper management. Beleive me...I want to be wrong but it seems like they are going to sit pat....

I think he will have to go into the transmogrifier if he wants to cement his positiion in the rotation. (Hopefully, he won't come out of the box sporting Tommy John arms.) When he was pitching in the playoffs, I was not impressed at all. His fastball looked particularly hittable. He needs to get more movement from his pitches IMHO.

Twins Sitting Pretty in Early 2024 Betting Lines
Aerodeliria replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
1) If the Twins do nothing, I predict they will underperform and struggle to be .500. 2) If the Twins do nothing, Detroit will overtake them. The Tigers have a mindset on winning and have been making moves to solidify their team. The Twins have been looking in dumpsters to find a reclamation project and found one so far, but I wouldn't interrupt my afternoon nap to celebrate that pick-up. I normally don't put much faith in ESPN, but in this case they are right. Minnesota's off-season score? D- -
...the article does say he also has platoon issues....I think that was what Twins' world claimed before the trade. The Marlins obviously didn't think that and they were proved right. Arraez raked regardless of the pitcher....
-
I think that they need a starter and a healthy outfielder ('healthy Buxton' is an oxymoron) who is a contact hitter. These can be obtained in trades. Will the Twins do it? I doubt it. I suspect they will try to grab a reclaim project from the scrapheap for pitching 'unfortunately' and ride with the outfielders that we already have. I also think our pooh-poohing of Detroit as an actual threat is a mistake. They will be much better IMHO; they're taking steps to make themselves better while the Twins fiddle around with their calculators.

The title of this article make me snicker...implying that the Twins had considered throwing their hat in the ring for Ohtani...well-played.

Of course their plan was to let them walk, but it does not imply that their plans also include going after an upgrade in pitching. It could simply be a money dump. I'm skeptical that it is not that to be honest. I hope that my inclination is wrong, but I don't see clues pointing towards landing an upgrade at this point.

Why Didn’t the Twins Sign Sonny Gray or Kenta Maeda?
Aerodeliria replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
All of this wishful thinking.... -
When the Twins landed Lopez, I didn't like it, but I understood it. When the Twins lost Sonny Gray, I didn't like it but I knew it was a likely outcome. When the Twins lost Maeda, I didn't like it and I didn't understand it and it didn't have to be the outcome. This was the Twins being cheap. We now have two holes in the rotation. Depending on Ober and Paddack? You're lucky if one of the two makes it to September without being on the DL, and Ober hasn't really impressed me all that much, so I hope it would be Paddack surviving, but that's a much bigger 'if' than Maeda IMHO. Will we fill the void by landing a solid starter? I honestly don't think so. That direct announcement about losing media money seems like it is going to be used as a built-in excuse for going cheap on all fronts while crossing all fingers that someone breaks out in a big way or we happen to get someone on the cheap who suddenly turns the corner. I hope I am wrong, but this seems like upper management reverting back to old strategies of scooping up warm bodies from the ash-heap to fill any holes. (Three cheers for the Twins but this off-season has started out so negatively that it's hard to believe that the upper management is thinking much about the fans and that is depressing.)

Kenta Maeda Agrees to Deal with Tigers
Aerodeliria replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This off-season has begun with kind of a Grinch-like (Pohlad-like?) tone if you ask me. Securing Maeda would have been pretty easy and relatively inexpensive. Maybe the front office does know more about pitching than I do, but something they certainly know more about is cutting corners at the fans' expense. After last spring's moves (which were pretty dramatice by Twins standards) and our playoff win, I thought this would be a new era in MN, where the Twins considered winning as being king. I just don't get that sense anymore with recent announcements and moves. "Let's see if we can milk this playoff win by going cheap. Hey, we might find something in the dumpster that turns out to be edible or even delicious, and if it doesn't? Who cares. We tried...sort of." Sorry, but this has been a very disappointing off-season so far, and this most recent move brings that home. Saying that Maeda really wasn't worth $12? He was only one year recovered from TJ surgery and he still pitched fairly well. He'll probably be 100% recovered this year, so my guess is he'll pitch a lot of innings for Detroit. In the end, I hope Minnesota doesn't revert to being the team that no one wants to play for and our present budding stars hope to flee from, but it is not heading in the right direction IMHO.- 28 replies
