  1. Julien made two great plays, both for the third out. The first was (I think) in the 5th when Lopez was really laboring.
  2. Both things can be true. The deal for Mahle appeared to be decent (although some believe Mahle's overall health condition was not well researched: https://www.si.com/fannation/bringmethesports/twins/were-tyler-mahles-shoulder-issues-public-info-before-mn-twins-trade). On the other hand, Steer was consistently overlooked for possible playing time despite being a very consistent hitter in AAA ball.
  3. The biggest thing for me is that whatever was bothering Maeda seems to have vanished at least for this game. I still think he tweaked something--some kind of muscle strain or something--because he wasn't getting many swings and misses. Today he seemed to be back to 'normal,' which is a relief heading towards October.
  4. For a hitter who has a lot of upside, such as Julien, I would rather see him hit often against lefties--especially in this final month. The platooning thing has always bugged me. (This is exactly how Arraez was treated in MN--lest you have forgotten...he's just not that good hitting lefties--.328 against lefties this year. Miami's approach? Every day, no matter who is on the mound...). If Julien is going to become the hitter that everyone believes he can become, he needs to hit in those situations IMHO, and why not start now in the final month of the season when the stakes are a bit lower? It is especially difficult for rookie hitters to adjust to pitchers in the 'bigs'--even more difficult when a lefty is facing a lefty and a righty facing a righty (although the latter is probably a bit easier due to sheer numbers). You can say, let's fix it in BP or against the machine or in the fall league. It's just not the same. He will only get better with opportunities in the actual games. He may fail frequently but his upside is worth gambling on.
  5. That was a good win...perhaps the best of the season. I am not sure how Castro got the barrel on that ankle-high pitch, but he certainly did.
  6. ...and in the end, they had to pick up a couple of outfielders from the scrap heap instead. In other words, we ended up with bats, but particularly poor ones...and no relief help at all.
  7. Gallo...it's sad for me. I was big supporter of bringing him in. I thought that he just needed to get out of the Bronx Zoo. When he started so well, I thought it was true, but alas, after that fast start, he really has been an albatross. (I never expected him to hit .280 and blast 40 home runs, but I was kind of hoping for .220 and 30+ home runs, which I could live with.) Falvine is fuming? I'm not so sure. There is a lot of stubborn pride attached to these decisions.
  8. Jacoby Ellsbury....same position...same potential...same kind of contract...all of the problems...
  9. Sometimes, you just gotta tip your hat to the other guys...
  10. I've defended Rocco more this year than in the past couple of years, but pulling Gray in a game where he's dealing, and has only thrown 85 pitches, is meant to do what? Piss Gray off? I'm sure that was achieved.
  11. Thanks for clarifying. I knew about the five-inning minimum for a win for starters. I think that has been around for eons, but the other info is new to me.
  12. It was a nice comeback. Lewis is making it hard to justify keeping him out of the lineup. I'm a bit concerned by Maeda. I'm afraid he has tweaked something again--note the lack of strikeouts. I'd keep a close eye on him in the next start. I think I'm still living in the 1980s. I thought relievers got a save when the person in the hole represented the tying run......I guess you can get a save for simply making one pitch regardless of the score...even if the score is like 18-2? That's weird...if it's true...(too lazy to investigate...)
  13. I would hesitate to shut him down completely because he is a notoriously slow starter. Maybe DH him every other day if the foot is bothering him a little, but as was mentioned, how bad is the condition? I am much more concerned by Maeda's start against Cleveland--only three Ks. That makes me think he might have re-injured himself, but perhaps he just had an off night. Let's hope for the latter, but if he pitches this poorly the next time out, my guess is that he has re-injured himself and will need to be shut down again.
  14. I've yet to see him play, actually, but SoftBank will likely make the playoffs despite La Tortuga's .136 BA (I'll bet he hasn't seen a fastball in about a month), They have a mystique that arises from getting the most out of their players.
  15. The Twins played ugly baseball but the Rangers were uglier, and the bullpen was stellar. I want to criticize Donovan for the stupid base running in extra innings, but he did rescue the Twins with that basehit in the 9th, so it's a wash.
  16. I never understood picking up Luplow. There is a handful of Luplow's floating around--barely major league quality but with experience.
  17. I've said it before and I'll say it again, despite BB's love of the game, he is an injury waiting to happen ala Jacoby Ellsbury. I was concerned when we signed him to the big contract and nothing has unfolded to dissuade me from these feelings.
  18. The best teams also are good defensively.....................................fielding blunders again cost the Twins.
  19. Thank you! I never want to underestimate defensive metrics. In the first two months of the season, errors or blunders in the field cost the Twins seven games. I haven't tracked errors lately, but I doubt we've improved much. Some players make glaring errors at key moments in the game (Polanco, Miranda, Kepler (not recently, fortunately), and in playoff games, bad habits, developed over time, tend to rear their ugly heads. Of all of my beefs with how the team is managed, this is the biggest for me. Some players may not need reps (Correa, Taylor), but IMHO, they are still vitally important. Good defensive habits are developed through repetition, which is reflected in routine under stressful situations and trust in other players.
  20. I do like what I saw, which is plenty of tempting pitches just out of the strike zone and varying velocities, but, as others have mentioned, it is one game. If he can do that three or four times in a row, that would be a win-win.
  21. I'm impressed that Jenkins hit the homer off a slider/curve ball...and not one of those floaters that just stay in the hitting zone for like five seconds. That pitch had some downward bite and he just tracked it and crushed it.
  22. One thing that has dipped under the radar is that the Twins have been playing much cleaner baseball. I'm happy to keep Castro over at 3rd. He makes the left side solid. The right side is a bit shakier, but not horrifying, same with the OF. The catching has been fine.
