  1. If Keuchel gets hitters to swing at those pitches just off the strike zone and mixes his pitches and speeds ala Greg Maddux, he'll be just fine.
  2. Castro looked very comfortable over at third and proved it with that bullet throw from foul territory.
  3. I think the crucial question raised by Mr. Palmer, which gets lost in the weeds of hindsight analysis, is, "Are the Twins good evaluating their talent?" I think another question is "Are the Twins good at maximizing the potential of the players they have in the system?" It's hard to put a positive spin on the answer to either of those questions, so I would say that hindsight is not necessarily 20-20 if it might lead to positive re-evaluation and reflection. As it stands, however, the Twins don't have a great record in this matter IMHO.
  4. I just like the title. It's always my pet peeve when pitchers start walking guys. It cost the big boys again today (Balazovic's two BBs put the game out of reach after the three-run blast). A silly side story, I went to a game with my wife between the Yomiuri Giants and the Chuinich Dragons a couple of years back. The Dragon's starter walked the first three batters. My wife is not a particularly avid fan of baseball but Chuinichi Dragons is her hometown (Nagoya) team, so she wanted to take me to the game. I turned to her and said that the Giants are going to score a lot of runs this inning. I think she asked 'why' or something, and I said because now the pitcher is probably going to throw a fastball right down the middle of the plate (my wife now uses the term 'watermelon' to describe these kinds of ptiches). Sakamoto (I believe) was the hitter and he doubled. I think the Giants ended up scoring 8 runs in that inning and after a few more walks in inning number two, they tacked on another 5. By the 5th or 6th inning, I think they had walked about 10 Giants' hitters and had accumulated 21 runs. We left the game because we got cold. We still had fun, but 'walks really do haunt.'
  5. The Twins relievers walked three batters in the 8th and 9th...the most egregious was Moran walking the first two batters with a four-run lead. That's really inexecusable IMHO. I have no problem with Pagan's pitch. That's gonna happen, but the BBs are not winning baseball.
  6. As I always say, when Maeken is getting swings and misses, you know he is feeling fine.
  7. My question exactly...that was an ugly inning for him. He got beat by a .154 spray hitter with zero homeruns until today. Use the 98 mph fastball against those weak hitters!!
  8. The Twins have seemed surprisingly gutsy since the All-Star break. Hat tips all around....
  9. I Croncur. I wouldn't give up anyone with any potential upside to get him.
  10. Go for the Nootbar Express. He hits lefties better than righties...I think because of his swing. He plays excellent defense, and most importantly, we can have Noot Bar Night at Target Field (a new candy bar invented by Pearson Candy to welcome him to the Twins.)
  11. The Cubs will demand more than the Twins are willing to cough up IMHO, but someone will be willing. We should shoot for something a bit more reasonable like 'Nootbar,' who has a nice WAR and doesn't K every other at bat. (Besides, Pearson Candy can make a new candy bar with his name and photo on it. Noot Bar night at Target Field...imagine... ;-)
  12. How about Nootbar in center. He's a superior hitter to Taylor, and a very good fielder. I think the Cardinals would be willing to deal him.
  13. I like when Duran throws heat. It's when he dinks around with curves and sliders that hitters sit on the off speed pitches. Throw the heat-- splitters and four seamers and toss in a curve or a slider once in awhile.
  14. I like Julien and Kirilloff's approach at the plate. They both seem quite content to hit the ball wherever it is pitched. Kirilloff opposite field hitting has been a breath of fresh air.
  15. ...in that case, we should say 健太王 (Kenta-oh) and Le Roi Julien to be fair to everyone...
  16. Because of the mess in CF, why don't we shoot a little lower and try to get a guy like Nootbar? It would be a significant upgrade at the plate and one would almost lose nothing in the field. He's also kind of a spark plug player.
  17. The worst moment in the game was the bases-loaded, swing at the first pitch by Kepler, so no, the homerun only magnified the the bases-loaded failure and had little to no redemptive effect IMHO, which also agrees with MLB's Gameday, (MLB's Gameday elevated the Twins chances of winning after the homerun from 1% to a whopping 3.5%.)
  18. I agree with every word you have said, but I have very strong doubts that the words from Lewis have made any significant impact on the players or the philosophy--especially when listening to Rocco's post-game interviews. I'll believe it when I see it as a consistent approach as well as who gets penciled (or is it scanned now?) in on the lineup card.
  19. How about a better hitting coach, so we could at least change the approach. The homerun or strikeout approach really isn't working. The Twinkies scored four runs at home in the three-game set.
  20. The other point, which seems to be an unwarranted drumbeat, is that Max Kepler is some kind of defensive specialist...sorry, but that is 2018 talk. MK is mediocre fielder. He has had some very crushing misplays in the outfield (the incident in Boston comes to mind in the extras) this year and is sporting a sparkling -0.1 WAR regarding defensive metrics. I hope MK stays hot, so we can trade him away for something. I just don't see a massive upside with Kepler. I used to defend Kepler, but he is not the player I thought he was.
  21. Arraez has a job. It is to get on base. That is something the Twins sorely lack now. It is NOT his job to drive in runs. If the folks behind him cannot drive him in, that is a reflection on the hitters behind him. I would take Arraez over every other hitter on the Twins right now....
  22. We fans are stuck on oscillating mode or maybe we had set the timer at 79 games...
  23. It's nice to see co-stars if it is warranted. Thanks for that. It seems like when starters get demoted from the big club, they inevitably have a very rough time at the outset. This pattern held true again with Varland. Bechtold can really bring the heat, but the ball didn't seem to have much movement... it's still early days (as they say in the UK), so time will tell.
