jorgenswest pointed out Kirilloff’s mistake in the fifth inning. He would have gotten the out by committing to handling the play himself. The three-run home run would not have then occurred because the inning would have ended before it happened. It was a classic rookie mistake (that I hope is a lesson learned) that turned out to be the difference in the game. Floro deserved better. Even though the three runs show up on the stat sheet as earned runs it was a fielding mistake that allowed them to score.

Actually, because Cleveland holds the tiebreaker going 16-2 would win them the division in that scenario.- 30 replies

Week in Review: Mission Accomplished

Regarding the order in which Gray and Lopez pitch in the postseason, if one is historically better in individual matchups with opposing batters then that’s who goes first. Also, Gray being more experienced may make him slightly better suited for the first postseason game. But beyond that I don’t think it makes much difference. I myself am optimistic about this postseason. I think our starting pitching is flying under the radar of most of the national media and I think some eyes will be opened next month.- 30 replies

Whether it’s Stevenson or Gordon, when MAT comes back that player will be taken off the active roster. That will probably happen before Gordon is ready anyway.

As others have said, Castro has supplanted Gordon and it’s on merit, not by default. Given the current oversupply of left-handed bats in the organization Gordon doesn’t really have a place here any more. When the off-season rolls around there are other players who will be higher priorities for those valuable spots on the 40-man. My hope is to find a trading partner for him but that’s unlikely because everyone knows he’s probably destined to be DFA’d. I think he has a reasonable chance to become an important player somewhere else in 2024. Losing him with nothing in return would be unfortunate but that’s the business of baseball. We have to do what’s best for the organization.

I don’t see Ober as a postseason reliever. I expect him to be the fourth starter, but we only need 3 starters on the roster for the first round. I believe the roster can be reset after each round so there’s no need to include him until the next round. And I wouldn’t rule out Keuchel as a postseason reliever.

I’m sure there is temptation to rush his development based on better-than-expected performance so far but I would expect cooler heads to prevail. We will know when it’s time for him to advance to the next level. Joe Mauer made it to the majors before he turned 21 but that’s a really rare accomplishment.

Did the Twins Mishandle Bailey Ober in 2023?
Nine of twelve replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sending him to St. Paul was not a true demotion. Everyone knew his effectiveness had faded and I think it’s nearly certain that he was fatigued. Putting him on the AAA roster is kind of like a rehab assignment without being on the IL first. If we go deep enough in the postseason we’ll need a fourth starter and he’s it. He’s getting the rest he needs so he can be ready when the time comes. -
I would not propose drastic changes in division alignment. Maybe if and when expansion takes place. Keep in mind team performances ebb and flow. In 2022 the NLC had a worse record than the ALC. The ALE became stronger this season due almost exclusively to the improvement of one team. I think the disparity in financial wherewithal from one franchise to another is the biggest factor here.

I very strongly disagree. Terry Francona knew that the chance of winning last night’s game was infinitesimal. His objective is to win the AL Central division. He needs to use any means within the rules to that end. Trying to set his team up to win the next two games was of highest importance. He needed to protect his bullpen. Using a position player to pitch was by far the best thing he could have done. Burning relief pitchers in that situation would have been disrespectful to any knowledgeable fan and to the game.

Twins Trending Toward Bullpen of Starters
Nine of twelve replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A fifth starter is rarely if ever needed in the postseason and a fourth won’t be needed in the division round if things go really well. A staff of 12 or possibly even 11 should do the trick. Choose the four best starters (Gray, Lopez, Ryan, and probably a rested Ober) and then choose the best remaining 7 or 8 to round out the staff. Simple, but that doesn’t mean the decision is necessarily easy.- 28 replies

Twins Bomba Squad Record is Being Threatened
Nine of twelve replied to Nate Palmer's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I appreciate the humor but I almost never let this subject matter go without saying that Gant was not lifted off the base by Hrbek. After Gant lost his balance and was tagged out Hrbek did apply some lift but at that point the play and the inning had ended so it didn’t matter.- 19 replies

Week in Review: Keeping a Distance
Nine of twelve replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
For Cleveland this is a must-sweep series. If we win or sweep we’re up 6 or 8 games with 22 remaining. Even leaving Cleveland with a 4-game lead is not unfavorable.- 15 replies

I guess this thread is as good a place as any to post this. We have 25 games remaining. 3 are against an opponent who currently has a better record than ours. The Guardians have 25 games remaining. 15 are against an opponent who currently has a better record than theirs. They have a west coast road trip remaining. We are 5 games up in the standings. I don’t gamble on sports but I would take any even odds bet for us to win the division.- 15 replies

My idea was just a quick thought, not a serious well-researched proposal. I’m sure there are other issues as well. Maybe have a draft of all players either waived or DFA’d, maybe every month, I don’t know. I just think there must be a way to improve on the current system that would be more fair for players and for all teams.

Here’s an idea: No player may be waived between the trade deadline and August 31. On that day all waivers are announced and a draft is held with each team selecting 1 player at a time (or declining to make a selection). These players would be eligible for the postseason. There would need to be a way to discourage tanking during August, possibly a lottery of some sort to determine the selection order. I have an idea for how a lottery could be done but I’m not going to go into details now. Would this work?

Professionals are able to put personal differences aside when it comes to performing their jobs. Sometimes it’s hard, but it can be done. Joey Ramone and Johnny Ramone had numerous personal differences but their shared commitment to the band made the band great.

Prospect Retrospective: Kody Funderburk

I’m not sure but I think the expanded roster lets a player be called up without any restrictions.
