  1. Hmm.... an interesting idea, but I think that ship has sailed. My hunch is that Garver will want too much money as a free agent, plus the Twins don't have a big need for his services as things stand now. Plus, his injury history would make me think twice too. But when he's healthy, he obviously a strong bat to have in your lineup.
  2. I knew next to nothing about most of the Seattle pitchers mentioned in this article, so I appreciate the details and suggestions. From reading the other comments, I'd also agree that it's unlikely that Seattle would want to trade any of their young arms. Maybe for a hitter like Julien, but I don't think any of our other pieces are what would motivate them. In any case, it's good to hear some different ideas and trade scenarios floated. I'm sure the front office is busy thinking of their own trade ideas ... or so we keep hoping!
  3. That's a rather sad late career stat for Zoilo Versalles. Let's hope his birthday buddy Buxton does not follow in those footsteps. I don't know what to expect of Buxton this coming season, but I remain naively optimistic.
  4. As others have said, this seems to be the standard strategy for the Twins front office in recent years. And yet, other teams are out there signing players and making trades, so why not us? I understand the strategy of waiting until the bigger free agents have signed and the market "settles", or whatever it is that happens, but it also seems to me that the longer we wait we risk losing the better players to other teams. Luzardo is available (maybe?). Well, we won't be the only team trying to acquire him. Not much on the free agent market that either fits our apparently limited budget or really "moves the needle" overall, so it looks like a trade, or two or three, is our best hope to improve the team for this coming season, I only hope the front office actually does have a plan, and a plan B, and are ready to impress us with their patience and ingenuity. But man, get it done soon!
  5. If we want to get a pitcher like Luzardo we are going to have to give up a very good prospect or two. It will hurt, or at least initially feel like we are giving up too much. But if the Twins truly have the notion to compete next year, we need that extra piece for the rotation. If it's a choice, I'd rather part with Lee than Julien or Rodriquez.
  6. It just seems like a shame, a waste, or however else you want to spin it, that the Twins just had their best season in MANY years, and actually won some playoff games, and with all that momentum, it now appears they will be cutting the budget and trying to pick up cheap pieces again to compete next year. Very frustrating. Sure, I understand that these are still early days in the process, but that hasn't stopped the Royals and Tigers from being aggressive in adding players to their rosters. Of course, just adding players isn't the idea, we need to add some quality to this roster. At this point I'm not convinced it's going to happen .
  7. I hope they hang on to Farmer. His salary isn't that high, plus he can play multiple positions and just has that "tough as nails" type of mentality that I think we need on the team.
  8. I agree, Polanco alone won't bring back a frontline starter, and even adding the other two players you mentioned won't sweeten the pot enough either. If want good pitching, very good pitching, we are going to have to part with one of our better prospects too. No other way around it.
  9. Are we ever going to see Prielipp pitch in our system? What is his health status going into next season?
  10. Darn it, those Ham Fighters are signing all the good free agents!
  11. I was wondering what had happened to Archer. I always liked him as a player and personality. I think this will give him a good second career in baseball.
  12. I think Alcala could indeed be a valuable piece in the bullpen this coming season. He seems to be healthy again, and as you noted in your post, he's putting up impressive numbers in Dominican league. I think that makes for good vibrations!
  13. That pretty much sums up the situation. We have a good roster right now, and we might be able to win the division again if everyone is healthy and performs as expected, Okay, lots of maybes in that scenario. But if we have any hopes of going further in the playoffs next year, we really need one more "special" arm in the rotation. Otherwise, we are back to the good/bad old days of the Yankees curse again.
  14. Carl Pavano! That's the name I was trying to remember when the topic of "innings eater" came up. He hung around longer than most of us would have thought, I'll give him that.
  15. It's starting to look like the list of spring training invites might be the highlight of our off-season! But speaking of that, when are the ST invites announced?
  16. Yes, this yearly wait for the front office to decide on signings and/or trades drives me nuts!
  17. Yeah, and the Angels had both Otani and Trout the past couple of years and they still couldn't even make the playoffs at all. A team game and a weird game. Gotta love it no matter what!
  18. Lugo would have been a good back-end rotation piece, but Kansas City just signed him. As so many others are saying, if we want to compete at a higher level we need to add another arm in the range of Lopez or Gray, or something even better (dare I hope!).
  19. Great article. I like this kid a lot. As Ricky said, let's hope he's a useful addition to our bullpen for many years!
  20. Marlins just picked up Bethancourt, so adding another catcher won't be in their plans now.
  21. Yes, it's a VERY uneasy idea. As much as I dislike Bauer as a person (or is personality the better noun?), I certainly think he could help the team in the starting rotation. A difference maker? I think it's possible, and that's worth consideration if we want to make the playoffs again.
  22. Cool idea for an article! Well written and full of fun anecdotes and quotes. Gives us a different and interesting look at this game that we all love. More please!
  23. Yes, absurd is the word. As you noted, once in a rare while, a big contract to a player in their 30s pans out (Nelson Cruz was another exception) but most of the time (80% or higher?) those contracts ended up looking very bad. Either the player is traded or released before the end of the contract, and by that time, he's lucky to even be playing. Hey, I'm an old grumpy baseball fan, but these types of big contracts being handed out to semi-good players just makes me roll my eyes. Then again, I never mastered economics.
  24. I also like Gordon in the outfield more than in the infield, and to my eye it seems like he more comfortable in the outfield, and as a result more productive. I understand all the negativity about his future and/or capability, but I sure would like to see him play one position all year with no health issues, and see what he can do. Okay, maybe we don't have the luxury of sticking with him for a full year, but at least give him three months and give him the chance to produce or not. As things stand, I don't see him as having much trade value, so I think the Twins to stick with him a bit longer and find out what he can do to help the team.
  25. You said it! Most other national or international news nowadays is beyond depressing! Give me the boredom of the Rule 5 draft any day!
