  1. I agree that Greene should have been signed. He is a proven closer who could maybe have helped. But I also believe that Alcala should be given more of a role, that Dobnack should be brought up to start and have Shoemaker pitch long relief, that Sano should be put on waivers and, if anyone claims him, maybe we can trade him to them for something-anything. I don't think he would be claimed at this point. Rogers should be the closer but we hardly have a lead in the ninth anymore. We have 3 weeks til Memorial Day when we can then play taps on the season. It doesn't look good- especially with Bux and Arraez out- but stranger things have happened. Keep toying with the lineup and move Donaldson into the cleanup spot. After all, that's why we signed him- isn't it?
  2. OMG. Now the minor league bullpens are stinking it up
  3. I did see a play on reply that he should have challenged but didn't but can't remember which it was.
  4. Well they have now driven nail #1 (of 3) into the coffin of this season by losing 3 of 4 to a team that is no better than a .500 team and while at home. At this rate, nails #2 and 3 will be driven into the coffin by Memorial Day- just 3 weeks away. Some want to fast forward to 2022 but lots of changes will have to be made and Cruz will be gone. Right now things look bleak and the farm doesn't appear to have much help- especially in the pitching department. I still hope they can turn things around but I'm getting more pessimistic every day. Yes, you can blame the bullpen because that is how it looks but the offense isn't much better. If Turtle leads this team in offensive categories, we are in trouble (sorry Turtle).
  5. Since I am a fan of Rogers, I'd deal for a righty first. All four seem good but are they just hot right now? I don't see why this team doesn't give Alcala a shot at closing. Yesterday's game was lost due to a lack of hitting in the clutch. Maybe trade for a clutch hitter??? I'm not quite ready to gut this team but it is disappointing so far. And the injuries don't help but other teams also have injuries.
  6. I wish they would stop the BS about exit velocity. Much of that comes from the pitcher anyway. A sports group that I zoom with was talking about how boring baseball has become and all the wasted stats that cause many good hitters to swing for the fences, strike out way more than they need to, and fail to do the little things anymore by trying to hit over a shift. We also exchanged ideas about how to make baseball exciting- pitch clock, move the mound back, have a designated runner and eliminate the shift among other ideas tossed around. Lets keep up the good offense.
  7. It has long been believed that those who do well in AA ball will do well in the majors. not sure why. Maybe the AA players are more hungry and not as many hanging on. AAA players are more for depth and rehab. I'm amazed that a team would keep a player over 30 in the minors anymore- especially after the minors have been shrunk.
  8. The Twins have to win 15 of the next 20-22 games to be considered a serious contender this season. If they don't, it could be difficult for them to make the playoffs.
  9. I will never figure out this WAR stat or even how they figure it but it's great to see Bux doing well. Now if he only can stay healthy. His defense has been great as well but we know that. In order for him to win MVP, the Twins will have to win or come close to winning the Division. That could still happen and would become more realistic if they can win 15 of the next 20-22 games.
  10. Nice to see the bats break out but home runs are not the answer. They need to be better hitters and home runs can only lead to more strikeouts. let's see what happens in the games that are close. Also nice that Happ is in a good groove right now. The bullpen could not possibly blow this one- even if Austudillo was pitching....or could they?
  11. I chose the Royals as the team that could surprise this year in the AL (even though I picked the Angels to win the West). They have some very good young players and pitchers who, if they all come together, could make a run. While I don't expect them to win the division, winning early in the season gives them the belief that they can go on. And Hunter Dozier hasn't begun to hit just yet. It would not surprise me if they finished third in the Central. The Tigers are also a team of the future as they have the best young pitchers in the division and in their minor leagues. I expect them to be contenders within 2 years if their management makes the right decisions. They already have the best manager in the division..
  12. I read they were toying with Colombe's delivery and/or grip. Could that be a major part of his problem? He certainly has stunk this year so far. Why mess with what has been successful in the past? Maeda certainly is nothing like we saw last year. Hopefully he can regain some of that form. Much of the offense (?) is toast except for a few sparks and the defense, which has always been a strength, has been awful. These are things that happen when a team goes South. I'm surprised that, with the losing and then Baldelli forgetting about the mound visit rule, that he wasn't fired. Something has to be done to shake this team up. Usually it's the manager that is let go first. I guess we'll see.
  13. Austudillo uninspiring??? Who are you watching? He's among our top hitters which isn't saying much. The scary thing is not only how poorly this team is playing but the fact that only 10% of teams in history that have started this bad after 20 games have bounced back to make the playoffs. You might say that they are in a weak division with only the White sox to beat, however it doesn't look like a wild card team will come from the central at this point. I only wish they still had Rosario though May would also have helped. Let's see what comes this week but we have to win 4 at least and what are the odds of that happening?
  14. Though I am not a fan of "the shoe", he pitched well enough to win today. I'm almost ready to give up on Garver but we don't have much else. He looks hopeless at the plate in most instances. Maybe he should concentrate on hitting the other way most of the time and look for those pitches. Maybe when the others get healthy, Austudillo (God forbid) should catch. At least he is hitting the ball. Kiriloff will get going soon. The talent is there. It's just a matter of time. But the team is starting to run out of time unless they can turn this around. If we can't beat the Pirates........
  15. Happ is certainly capable of pitching almost as good as he did last night. He won't win 20 games but he is a decent veteran. I don't like Ausudillo and was even surprised to see him make the team. But he is playing well enough to hang around for awhile, he is versatile and boy, can he pitch. Cave is a favorite of mine though he really isn't more than a fill-in. Nice to see him contribute.
  16. Being in a minor league city, the word we got was the minors were starting late because of the COVID pandemic which was going to cause major league teams to call up players and also to keep minor league players safe. Also, the callups were not supposed to count against the major league teams (whatever that means). I don't know what a minor leaguer has to prove before getting the callup. First year minor leaguers may have to learn to be away from home and adjust to playing almost every night. Otherwise, who knows why one player gets the call and another doesn't.
  17. Regardless of Baldelli's decisions, the players need to make the plays. Arraez' throw was the worst I have ever seen on a routine play for a third baseman. Even my little league third baseman makes better throws than that.
  18. When teams are hot, they find ways to win. When teams are not, they find ways to lose. That's about all you can say about that game. I'll bet both Blankenhorn and Arraez make those plays 24 out of every 25 times. However, the Twins are cold right now so both blow the play. At least the offense finally came alive. Let's hope things turn around quickly. What I will never agree with is letting a relief pitcher not pitch a second inning after shutting out a team in their first (only) inning. Both Dobnack and Duffy did that today then were gone. Doesn't make sense to me and never will.
  19. Like I said before, let's see where things are on Memorial Day. Trouble is, we may be paying tribute to the dead Twins chances. Every team is going to go through slumps and, for now, the COVID thing. However, right now it doesn't even look like we have anything on the farm that could help. Too bad Lewis is gone for the year. Maybe he could help. Maybe we could trade for Baddoo except he is something like 2 for 30 after the hot start. If I were Baldelli, I would fine anyone who does not move a runner along and anyone who strikes out with men on base. Light a fire under some butts to get things going.
  20. The season will continue to be affected by COVID ragardless of vaccinations. The closeness of players, etc and no mask wearing in dugouts can still spread the disease which is rising in numbers right now- albeit mostly among younger people who have not yet been vaccinated. We will be eventually finished with this (mostly) but not in 2021. And then comes the boosters...... Hey. With the way we've been playing, maybe this will be a welcome break.
  21. As I said in another thread, things get overblown either way at the start of any season. I expect things to settle down to normal or close to it soon. Even the mighty (?) Yankees can't hit and can't win ballgames right now. Let's see where things are closer to Memorial Day. And let's see who is still on this team (and running it (?)).
  22. The entire bullpen, from long relief to the closer, is a big mess right now. We can't even expect Berrios and Maeda to win games if they blow all leads or allow the opposition to extend their lead. Cave and Sano are a mess though at least Sano will hit a bomber once in a week. This division winner is quickly turning into an also-ran. However, it's a long season and I expect them to straighten things out (at least I hope). Things are always overblown either way at the start of the season. This team is like the Yankees right now. They aren't hitting either though their bullpen has been just a bit better and they've had some injury problems..
  23. great to see Rodon get that no-no. He pitched at NC State so I got to see him a few times. He's had health issues but can be very good if he stays healthy.
  24. Things are not going well so far and the losses are against teams that we should be beating (though the Red Sox are hot right now). As far as a batting order, I'd bat Arraez leadoff followed by Polanco, Buxton, Cruz in the cleanup spot with Donaldson fifth. After that it becomes a crapshoot since Sano is not hitting anything. However, I guess you have to bat Kepler sixth, Sano seventh followed by the catcher and Simmonds Against lefties, maybe hit Garlick for Kepler if the lefty is a tough one. Let's hope this funk doesn't continue much longer cause tougher teams are coming.
  25. If i were a fan who came from miles away to see the game and it got cancelled at the last minute, I would be very angry. As it happened, all Minnesota games in all sports were cancelled yesterday. And at least 1 player (Aaron Hicks) did not play for his team. But is this going to happen in every city every time someone gets killed? I don't think that most fans would like this at all. I know that Yankee fans are screaming at Hicks for not playing. A friend of mine who lives in St Paul says that the police in Brooklyn Center have a bad reputation because of some of the population who came from somewhere else (Liberia) to live there.. I just don't know. I hope this country gets it's act straightened out. This just cannot go on.
