ScottyB Verified Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Are we really recalling Butera while Joe's on paternity leave? Hopefully it's just one last time and he'll be thrown in into whatever trade Ryan can make. Let's not give Gardy a chance to use him. Thank god Herrmann had the big hit last night and that Butera got no sleep last night flying out to the west coast so Gardy won't be tempted to start Butera today. If he doesn't want Herrmann catching a day game after a late night, swap Dooms and Herrmann as catcher and RF.

Even though Florimon and Carroll came through last night, how nice would it have been to have real options on the bench to pinch-hit in the late innings for one or both of them. Instead, the options on the bench are now Butera, Carroll, and Bernier. What atrocious roster management. Is this on the manager or the GM?
Rosterman Verified Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Bring back Thome! And, get ready for the return of Nick Blackburn. By the way, aren't we paying Butera something like $700,000 this year!

NC-Twins Verified Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Rhett speculated that Arcia being pulled was related to Mauer heading back to MN to be with his wife. Later, there were reports that it may have been dizziness. However, it is now being reported that it wasn't injury related and the scuttlebutt is that he was pulled for not running out a play. And, in response to an earlier post, YES, bring back Thome! He doesn't hit worse than Willingham. Though we don't exactly need to be more left-handed than we already are, we don't have anybody providing reliable power from the left side. He also wouldn't ruin our speed game because we don't have one.

Thanks Mr. Ryan, you're really giving Mr. Gardenhire a lot of strategic options.

Are you suggesting that if they only had one backup middle infielder, only two catchers, and only 12 pitchers, the Twins would be contenders? Obviously the Twins don't have the talent they need right now to compete. I am 100% positive that there is no combination of players, or composition of the roster, currently or realistically under Twins control, that could compete for playoff spot.

I am 100% positive that there is no combination of players, or composition of the roster, currently or realistically under Twins control, that could compete for playoff spot. Yes, and this has been known for the last 30 months or so. That does not excuse the fact that there are only 2 full time outfielders on the Twins active roster. Or that you have 13 pitchers. Or that you have four catchers on the active roster.
Steve Penz Verified Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 I have no issue with Oswaldo not be called up. He is 22 and part of a future. If he needs to stay in Roch, get his head straight and kill the ball for a while then so be it. I simply do not understand why Butera would get the call. Unless absolutely necessary, nobody should be up at AAAA unless they are part of a plan for the future. What part does Butera play? The Twins currently have 2 catchers at AAAA. I just do not get this.

Mauer will be back in a few days, at which point Butera will be sent back. Arcia will be back in a couple of weeks, at which point Berny will be sent back. Meanwhile, we are winning, so that's something.

That's not the point though, so if you want to defend the FO's bench/roster management, you're gonna need a better case than, "well, we won't make the playoffs"
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 It seems to me it gets harder and harder to try and see light at the end of this tunnel. Carroll, Bernier AND Butera. Oy. Hey! The oldsters are producing winning baseball since the All-Star break ended. Why not call up Jeff Clement to add to our all-star, building-for-the-future, geriatric bench? (FYI, Butera turns 30 in two weeks- he fits right in with the current "youth movement" going on with the call-ups of Cola [turns 30 in Oct,] and Bernier....look at the "youthful" infusion of energy that Clete has given us since his call-up...Thomas turns 30 in November....let's see, who besides Clement is ready for a promotion???....Richardson, Olmedo and Dinkleman all turn 30 this year). And I'm not complaining, just noting the irony. This latest stretch of games, especially Monday night and last night, have been the most entertaining of the year by far. Kudos to management for shaking things up and sending a message that jobs are neither guaranteed nor scholarshipped.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Who cares?!? It's what? 3 games? Not exactly like we are contending for a first place spot now. As much as everyone hates butera I like rooting for him, he is living every kids dream and plays the game the right way. It's nice that he is getting a couple games up with the ball club again. As long as he gets no more than 30 at bats a year butera is perfectly fine org depth at catcher. Besides herrmann and Doumit aren't really every day "catchers"

The only other team with fewer than 4 listed outfielders is St. Louis with 3, and they have Holliday on the DL and Allen Craig subbing (Craig came up as an outfielder although he's now listed as an infielder). Two listed outfielders is a strange alignment, to be sure.

So then Pelfrey, Correia, Doumit, Thomas, Carroll, Butera, Escobar, etc... shouldn't be up? Who is going to fill all those positions? My thoughts clarified- "a future" to me does not necessarily mean that they will be around when the Twins are relevant. It means that they are at least part of a plan to make that happen. You need to fill positions and put players on the field. If a player is up at AAAA then, in my opinion, they need to be part of the group that will be around when the Twins are more relevant or they need to be holding a spot for a younger person who is working towards being mlb-ready. I feel that all the players you listed are part on one of those columns except for Pelfrey. He is another topic. Butera is not keeping a spot warm nor is he future. The twins have 2 catchers at AAAA. Butera serves no purpose.
