I'm not worried about the team as a whole - yet - but I've never been particularly high on Varland, especially as a starter. I think he ends up in the bullpen relatively quickly, which *really* hurts rotation depth. I'm not falling over myself to put Simeon Woods Richardson in his place but that's the only real option right now.

Ownership blew it this offseason. Slide Jordan Montgomery into this rotation...

Everyone that wanted Louie Varland as your 5th starter, there you are... Enjoy!

78-84 might have been too kind.

Who's everyone? Pretty sure everyone wanted to add to the top of the rotation making Paddock the fifth starter.

I can't imagine anything in the offseason worked out the way anyone wanted it to other than Jim Pohlad.

Varland as the 5 is the result of slashing $30 million in payroll. At this point we need to play it out because the alternative isn’t much better. If he still stinks after 8-10 starts, then it’s time to move him to the bullpen or St. Paul.

This is exactly it. Varland needs a chance to succeed or fall on his face. That might be 6 starts, it might be 15. A lot, at least in my eyes, depends on whether SWR is throwing 94 or 89 on May 15th or so.

The Twins didn't want Varland in the rotation, they wanted Desclafani.

Well, which is it?

When people complain about acquiring another injured pitcher in a trade, “he was a throw in to even out salary numbers, they knew he was injured, they really just wanted the prospect.”

Now, when people complain about Varland (rightfully so, my 9 year old son can recognize he’s not a major league starter), “he’s only there because of the hard luck Descalfani injury.”

Either option, frankly, is awful.  Why in the name of pete would you rely on a guy who hasn’t been healthy in years?  That’s maybe more inexcusable than watching Varland pitch a home run derby every start and think, “yep, he’s the guy.”

Im getting tired of hearing excuses.  I don’t care about their intent. I care about results, and they are absolutely blowing it.

Both.

The Twins targeting DeSclafani isn't excusing Varland's performance. This team wasn't going to make it through a season with 5 starters, and Varland clearly was the next man up.

At least they tried to beef up the bullpen, but that too has backfired as half of them are hurt.

Trading for and penciling in DeSlcafani as #5, with only Varland & SWR as depth behind him was an insanely bad decision.

SWR looked good in his outing and deserves another start, lest we be suffering the likes of Randy Dobnak as savior.

The $15M we wasted on Santana, Margot & DeSclafani would have at least got us Maeda. Now we are in dire straights.

I didn't mean that statement as any kind of defense of the front office
