A bottom feeder team could use him as a starter without qualm

So yeah, a clear starting caliber CF

And an OBP 100 points higher than Taylor.

Which really means nothing as Taylors defense makes Juliens look like a Chinese Fire Drill.

Curious why you like Bader.

He seems to be as good , or better CF than Taylor but a lessor bat.

In these threads where bat first is most common, whether pro with history or AAA rookie unknown, that seems like an outlier position.

Bader had a bad year and Taylor had his best offense season this year so I could easily be convinced Bader is not a good idea.  However, Bader's career wRC+ is actually 10 points higher than MAT and Bader is better against LHP.   Of course, Bader is a great defensive player.  He would be a great fit if 2023 was a down year for him.  The best solution of all might be to give Martin a shot but he is not going to defend like Taylor or Bader.

There are 8 free agents coming off the roster.  (Gray / Maeda / Mahle / Pagán / Solano / Gallo / Taylor / Kuechel)  They could also remove De León and Henriquez.  Luplow is likely non-tendered.  IDK about Ortega and Gordon.  Is Ortega expected to be healthy next year and will they trade Gordon?  I would also put the odds of Polanco being traded at 50/50.  The two biggest question marks for me are Thielbar and Balazovic.  That’s potentially 16 players coming off and a total of 46 on the 40 man giving them room for up to 10 players with the actual number probably 6-7.

Erod / Martin / Camargo and Severino are no brainers for me.  I can’t see a team taking Salas given he had a 537 OPS at A+ this year.  If I assume 7 spots, the other three I would add would be Prato / Kiersey and Olivar

Why not.  What would be the advantage of leaving open spots?

Three thoughts…

  • Those 40 man spots are valuable in season and it is a burden to carry anyone that won’t see the major leagues.
  • If they add anyone in free agency they would need to DFA someone. It might be better to keep that spot open. A DFA’d player only needs to be added to the 40. They don’t need to make the opening day roster like a rule 5 pick. The risk of losing an asset is greater. If you pick an Olivar in the rule 5 draft you need to keep him on the 26. If Olivar’s spot on the 40 is needed during the season he would need to be DFA’d and would only need to be kept on another team’s 40.
  • The options clock starts as soon as a player is put on the 40. As an international signing Celestino was put on the 40 quite young and now he is out of options at the same age as Austin Martin who hasn’t started options yet. Willi Castro is an example of another player added to the 40 quite young and then didn’t flourish until it was too late for the Tigers. Using Olivar as an example again, should they start his options clock knowing catchers can take longer to be ready?

Martin, Camargo, Severino, are really the only 3 I say they need to protect.  Not saying others do not warrant discussion, but they are the only 3 that without a doubt would get taken in rule 5.  They are all AAA players that there would be a team willing to put on MLB roster.  There are a few other AAA guys on there, that should be talked about, but some of the other top prospects like Salas are less likely to get taken in rule 5.  Of course there could be a Tigers type team, that took Badoo, from single A, but rarely do high A guys, outside pitchers, get taken in rule 5.  Pitcher are more likely because you can stash in the pen for the year if needed.  However, position players are harder to stash and will need to play more.

I am sure they would risk losing several guys, but outside the 3 mentioned, many teams will take huge risk.  That being said, Twins have 46 guys on 40 man roster right now.  6 on 60 day.  I believe 7 are FA, so the crunch will take care of itself.  There are a few clear DFA guys, Luplow, Stevenson, which frees up the 2 spots we would need to get those 3.  There are a few other DFA candidates like Gordon, Moran, De Leon, a few other pitchers depending on how team feels.  Polo and Kepler could get options declined, and Farmer could get decline arbitration.  That frees up a lot of spots to fill in if needed.

Overall, I do not see a lot of tough decisions based on 40 man roster moves.

Also, Moran won't be DFA'd. See Cano, who the Twins gave up on too early and then the Orioles go and change his arm angle and he's great. If the Twins can just get Moran to throw consistent strikes, he is a great relief pitcher.

There is no debate. The Twins WILL put Emma Rodriguez on the 40 man roster. Everyone might as well just add him to their projection.

Sorry, Yeah I missed him on the list, duh, he will be protected too.  I was rushing when I read through list.

Many pitchers get DFA for not being effective despite their stuff.  Look at us picking up Stewert.  He was DFA'd a few times. I am not saying Moran will be DFA, the Twins do like his stuff, but fact is he has been around for 3 years, and has not been great.  Eventually, you just need to decide how long you want to see if he figures it out for your team, or let someone else take the time.  Pen guys bounce around all the time until they figure it out.  They get chances because they have stuff, but always something missing.
