Dennis Santana Placed on Waivers

Twins placed Santana on waivers, and Mets picked him up.  We currently have 39 players on 40 man.  I wonder what the move is going to be to fill that spot.  Trade, signing, or calling up a prospect?  Only way you make the move is if there is an expected corresponding move.

Or it could be they decided he wasn't making the team.

Of course it could always be position player, or someone not currently with the organization.

But there are some bright spots among current NRI pitchers:

Ortega has been sharp this spring and performed well in the majors last season for the Angels.

DeLeon got great exposure at WBC,

Coulome continues to be a loyal and steadily performing asset.

Dobnak is has the biggest dollar commitment from the team and they may wish to pursue a return on that commitment by adding him back on the 40-man.

Always fun to speculate, though, isn't it?

Ortega worked two scoreless innings today. mlbtraderumors listed Hoffman, De Leon, Coulombe, and Megill as possibilities for the last spot, but I think Ortega should be in the mix, particularly since he has two options if he is placed on the 40-man. Megill also has an option, so he could move freely between St. Paul and the big club.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see them not add anyone until right before the season. If he wasn't going to make the team he was going to need to be DFA'd in the next 2 weeks anyways. If he was going to be lost to waivers you'd want to do it now and get the guys who'll be on the team in 2 weeks their work instead of working with him to just have him plucked off waivers. My guess would be he lost his battle for a 26-man spot so they moved on to create the spot needed for whoever does win a battle (if needed).

It makes no sense to add a NRI to the 40-man until they have to. Someone could be designated who they really want to pick up and it is a lot easier if there is a roster spot available. With a roster spot available, it does level the playing field for the last bullpen spot. As I said on another thread, having guys with an option available makes it easier to shuttle relievers between St. Paul and Minneapolis.

I wonder if Dobnak might get that last spot.  They will likely need a decent long man coming out of the gates early.  I'm sure the Twins starters won't be allowed to pitch super deep into games early on in April and once in awhile there will be that guy that gets yanked out in the 2nd or 3rd.  Instead of stressing out the bullpen that would be perfect timing for Dobnak to come in.  Now once the Twins get to May and June Dobnak won't be quite as valuable because the starters should be fully stretched out by then.  But he could play a role early on?

Long man initially, mop up guy after that? But Dobnak was my first thought, too, but who knows. They could be working a trade for someone, or who knows. Imo, the BP is far from settled.
