I don't know if Arraez has the star power to command an "ace" in a trade, but I think dealing him now makes a lot more sense.  They might have done it anyway out of desperation, but now you actually have the long-term middle infield depth to support that move, such that it could actually make the team better, as opposed to shuffling pieces around to give off the appearance of doing something.

I agree with, like, 98% of your post - particularly the part about waiting for the final product.  (Case in point, 2021-22 offseason).  However, it's not like this outcome was orchestrated by the front office - Correa opted out of a contract (with the Twins), and then was signed by two other teams that significantly outbid us.  Those teams then had to essentially back out of those plans, at significant PR costs with their fanbases.  So, either they're right to bail on a long-term deal and we'll find out shortly, or they're wrong and the Twins are insanely lucky.  Maybe both?

As I said before, I still favor the move given the reduced amount and the shorter terms.  The vesting years are nice, but I'm pretty doubtful those are going to ever be desirable with a mid-30's (former?) shortstop who appears likely to have chronic injury issues sometime in the future.

I agree with what you posted.  What I want to show is whether it was Correa or someone else in 2 years,  they are willing to sign a good player at what they view is a reasonable contract.  Some odd things occurred to allow this contract to happen.   This is definitely not an I told you so situation,  its a situation that shows this front office has a bit of credibility and is beginning to play in the deeper waters a bit (not to quote Boras).   For the Twins to be competitive they need to hit on prospects and do deals like this.   Its a good day to be a Twin.

Yeah, and the vesting option will likely only kick in if he's still a useful player. And if that vesting option really is 4/70M, well 17.5M is going to be chump change seven years from now. The Twins are already paying DFA candidate Joey Gallo 11M here in 2023.

DFA canidate...nice

I mean I hope not, and I have hopes he'll rebound, but if he has a .620 OPS and is leading the league in strikeouts, while the other corner bats are playing well in St. Paul, that seems like a possible outcome.

I would be shocked if he has a .710 OPS at the All Star break

Much much MUCH better of a deal.  This actually makes sense for both sides in my opinion.  Bravo to the Twins front office if this works out.

Wow the vesting options are all based on 502 PA the years prior.

First option is at 25M, which is a lot, but will probably just be the equivalent of a QO by then. The following years are 20M, 15M and 10M.

That's fantastic. Even without discussing the games the Twins should or shouldn't play with those 502 PAs.

Dan Hayes is reporting the vesting options are for 575, 550, 525, then 502 PAs. If he doesn't hit the vesting option for the next year it turns into a team option. So if he doesn't get to 575 PAs in 2028 his $25 million vesting option turns into a $25 million team option. And then so on with 550 PAs/$20 million, 525/$15 million, 502/$10 million for the next 3 year's options.

Just as I expected all along!

Assuming he passes this physical, of course.

Have no fear, Dr. Nick was personally selected to run the physical!

This is unfreakingbeleivable! Great result. $33.33m a year for years aged 29-34, 17.5m a year for ages 35-39 IF he vests. Wow, what a good deal given the market. What's next, Vikings throw up four shutouts in a row and win the Super Bowl! Sorry, must have hit my head before I said that about the Vikings . . .

Yes! Now let's make a deal to get Lopez, Luzardo, or Rogers from Miami, and sign either Fulmer or Chafin to augment the bullpen. It's a good offseason now, but That would be a great offseason.

if the Vikings pull it off in the playoffs i might have a stroke.

That was why I wrote "a package including." Yes, the devil-in-the-details would be what prospects had to be packaged with Arraez. Yet our veteran roster indicates the Twins are in win-now mode, as did this deal. And Arraez's ability to put the ball in play and get on base is no small asset either.

As a fan, I like him, but my understanding is that he hasn't been interested in a long-term deal in Minnesota, so it's a matter of what talent we might get for him now.

This whole thing has been absolutely mind-boggling. Kudos for the very clever contract that made this happen.  There must be one or two trades left in the tank before ST begins; maybe just before if past history is an indicator.
