Smeltzer deserves to stay up.

2019 Smeltzer came up and helped bail out the Twins of a very dificult situation. I'm not a big fan of Smeltzer, he's not flashy but he gets the job done.Last year Smeltzer had been hurt but now he's 100%. He had a very effective ST and has continued to prove himself in AAA and a cameo appearance up in the majors. He deserves to stay up here and we need him up here to spot start and in long relief.

It seems to me that Baldelli has favorites and to those he give numerous chances to try to prove themselves while underdogs he doesn't give a single chance unless he absolutely needs them. Smeltzer is a under dog and as I suspect it is starting to effect Smeltzer personally. We can't have Smeltzer get down and doubt himself when he's doing everything right. We cannot waste Smeltzer's effective pitching style, we need him to come in and spot start and help relieve the short relief and rotation via long relief, otherwise they'll burn out again. If we fail it's because of this.

I mean, maybe he can stay up if his leash terminates after one poor start.

The guy has 2 strikeouts in 10 2/3rds innings. That just is not going to be sustainable. When the wheels fall off it's going to be swift and unrelenting.

It really won't matter until the manager starts letting ANY of the starters go more than 5 innings. This is all working now, but my money says this bullpen gets worn out around July/August and are going to be cannon fodder for the remainder...

He should be up in who's place?

He'll take the place of spot starter/ long which we don't have. If you mean the active roster, there a few I'd suggest. As a long RP he could substitute 3 short RPs anyone of those would suffice, a rotational door could be used to keep them fresh.

I think he should be used as much as possible and can be sent down if and when he becomes ineffective. Our rotation is good now, but how many innings have the young guys pitched in a season before? Let Smeltzer ease the workload.

Sonny Gray is the only starter of the 8 for the Twins that pitched more than 110 innings last year. If the rotation innings aren’t managed both the bullpen and the rotation will be blown out in August.

Meanwhile, the average start length has been steadily declining (I believe 5.0 innings last year) and the value of a strong bullpen has never been higher.

agreed on risk for the bullpen, but not so much because of the short starts, as much as the reduction of multi-inning relief appearances and too few high leverage relievers. There’s too many one inning guys you can’t trust in high leverage situations

Smeltzer has to be almost perfect every game in order to be a satisfactory MLB starter. He has a low-velocity fastball and his other pitches are good but not great. He needs to have pinpoint control and find a way to make hitters look for a pitch other than the one he throws. There is little to no room for error. There will be nights like last night where the opposition does nothing and there will be nights where the opposition scores early and often. That said, I think he is one of our top 5 starters. Moreover, I think it's important to have at least one lefty in the rotation and he's the only one we have who is MLB-ready. We should start him every fifth game and hope for the best.

I hope he does. Clearly good enough to be in the rotation and I like how he goes about his business. I enjoy watching him pitch versus someone like Archer who just gives me a migraine.
