Don't Feed the Greed Guy Verified Member Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Lighten up, Francis. My boys love this stuff! Watching Looie, Wanda, Skeeta, Babe and Bullseye race may be the highlight of competition this spring at Target Field. It's one of those silly things that appeal to 7 year old, and makes him want to go to the ballpark with his old man, where he learns how to keep score, and the finer points of the game. I point out how the infielders spring into a crouch as the pitcher begins his wind-up. Next week, at Rookie Ball, he's still up on the balls of his feet, while the outfielders are picking daisies, and the rest of the infielders are playing in the dirt. I love that. And, c'mon Dave, didn't you tear up, just a little, when Skeeta finally broke her board? It was a beautiful moment...

James Verified Member Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I enjoy a good cheesy montage video... and this one started out strong. Then the target dog was playing the guitar in the stands. What does that have to do with training for the race? When I first saw the title, for some reason I instantly thought, "there can be only one" and then thought of a mascot version of "Highlander." That video would probably be a little more entertaining.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted March 27, 2013 Author Posted March 27, 2013 It seems to me that kids wanted to go to baseball games before teams started adding inane races with ridiculous mascots sponsored by mega-corporations.Ding Ding Ding! I mean the sausage race and the presidents race were at least unique, this just reeks of "Hey lets just sell some more advertising every which way we can, but LOL we aren't going to spend it on the product on the field, who cares if we are down 7-2 in the 2nd inning because we signed Kevin Correia, just 4 more innings until you can see crappy mascots running around on the field! LOL its a mosquito, get it? Because there are mosquitos in Minnesota! Btw, please buy a $20 stuffed mascot for your kids, because we need more monies!!!" /end rant.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 In all fairness, I'm the wrong person to talk to about this sort of thing. I hate everything at the ballpark that isn't associated with baseball, eating, or getting drunk. Kiss Cams, the Wave, stupid races, whatever... I hate it all.

I think that's a key distinction, and I tend to be the same way as you - when I go to a game, I want to watch the game. That being said, I recognize that the job of the Twins is to cater to all types of fans, even the casual fans for whom the game-day experience (including all the fluff) is as important as the game on the field (which is often the case for families with children). I remember attending a game in Rochester last summer, and the family sitting next to me had two small kids. They lasted until about the 4th inning, then they went (with mom) over to the play area on the grass berm next to right field. The dad stayed behind and watched the game; the kids came back in the eighth inning with huge smiles on their faces. They had a good day at the ballpark, even if they didn't know who won the game.
TwinsFanInPhilly Provisional Member Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I just love being surrounded by drunks who think they know baseball but aren't even aware of the volume of their own voices. Give me a @#$%^&ing kiss cam any day.

ashbury Verified Member Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Kiss Cams, the Wave, stupid races, whatever... I hate it all. Taking in the 4-game strip of games in 3 days at the WBC in Phoenix, I quickly tired of seeing exactly the same sequence of the Dbacks' between-inning "events", even if I had tolerance for them in the beginning. Good news for you regarding the kiss cam: as the gay rights movement continues to make progress I expect teams will decide this "event" brings them grief whichever way they decide to continue with it.

It encourages already low attention-span folks to remain unfocused on a game that for most aspects (besides a hit, run and strikeout) - can only be appreciated with the focus and attention they lack.

DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted March 27, 2013 Author Posted March 27, 2013 I am all for some same sex kiss cams, adds a little spice to the game and it's nice to see old people get trolled and upset when it happens.

DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted March 27, 2013 Author Posted March 27, 2013 As long as both chicks are hot? Well I mean personally, that makes it more appealing to me. But two guys, two older women, etc it's all good, especially if it makes a few people get really upset, I take a certain amount of joy seeing jerks getting upset. Maybe that is because I am an *******, but still..totally worth it.

Not if you remember the Metrodome during the lean years. I still loved the games but there was a reason I got every batting practice ball hit in my section during those years. Kids ride the wave of public support more than anyone, they get excited about the team when they are winning and everyone is talking about Twins baseball. When they stink they may still say they like them but most will put them on the backburner. Diehard baseball fans will always show up, but we only make up a fraction of those in attendance.

Trading their top pitcher and their only viable shortstop for Delmon Young3. Selling Jim Kaat for $500 to their arch rivals4. Trading Butch Wynegar and Roy Smalley for Ron Davis5. Trading Ramos for Capps6. Signing Joe Mays to a long-term deal after one good season7. Signing Blackburn to a long-term deal after two good seasons8. (tie) Signing Mike Lamb, Tony Batista, Rondell White9. Signing Kevin Correia to a two-year deal10. Signing Nick Punto to a two-year deal for starting shortstop money

Agreed. Troll the audience, baseball! Liven up the between-innings entertainment! In that vein, I'd totally pay attention to a "Guess Which Seat The Bomb Is Under" game during the stretch.

The contraction thing is point 0. And the Herr trade should be slotted in behind number 4, where your Mr. Ron Davis is listed.
