I believe Alvarez was the second piece, after De Leon, in the trade agreement rumor that never came to fruition.

Yep. De Leon was the main piece in that trade.

 

Instead, the Dodgers traded De Leon to the Rays for Forsythe (who later became a Twin).

 

De Leon went on the DL three times in 2017 while in the Rays minor league system. He then tore his UCL before the 2018 season and had Tommy John surgery. He missed all of 2019, and just this offseason he was traded from the Rays to the Reds for cash considerations or a player to be named later.

wow! I feel for him to be so close and have the wheels come off in spectacular fashion. Hopefully he can get healthy in Cincy.

It's hard to believe, but Smetlzer+Raley has a real chance of being a better return for Dozier than a De Leon+Alvarez package would have been.

Yeah, I'd have never predicted that.   Maybe Falvine actually knows more than I do!

And then we turned around and used Raley as part of the Maeda deal. The Dozier trade has turned out to have more of an effect than I honestly thought it would.

I'm not sure it's that hard to believe -- it really just highlights the volatility of prospects (particularly pitching prospects).

 

The same could be said of basically any trade where a top prospect gets hurt / doesn't work out. For a Twins example, at the time of the Span deal, there were probably quite a few lesser prospects available who would have ultimately represented a "better return" than Alex Meyer.

I don't think it's ever been reported that the Dodgers offered De Leon plus Alvarez and the Twins turned them down.

 

Not that I'm faulting the Twins FO for anything in this sequence of moves, but it seems just as likely that the Dodgers saved us from that deal, rather than any kind of special insight from Falvey and Levine about these particular prospects. (Maybe with an assist from the Rays, who set the price for Forsythe at De Leon alone, which limited how much the Dodgers were willing to offer us for Dozier.)
