I agree, Turner wasn't doing anything flagrant or disruptive by the way he ran to first -- but that's not the standard of the rulebook (and I'm frankly glad it isn't, because that would open up a whole 'nother can of worms!).

 

The current setup is in fact "fair" to the runner in that it's codified in the common rulebook -- the Astros runners played the game last night under the same rules, but just avoided the circumstance that happened to Turner.

 

I agree, though, that the current setup may not be equitable for the runner, especially a right-handed one, but I don't want umps going rogue to make that determination either. It should be addressed by a change to the rulebook and a change to the base itself.

 

Not exactly true. Altuve ran much further inside the line, and wasn't called out for interference because it was a good throw. I'd bet 10000000000000 dollars if we watched every RH runner trying to get to first on an infield hit we'd see them take the same line as Turner 80+% of the time.

Well, that's what I said. The Astros played under the same rules, but Altuve didn't experience the same circumstances as Turner.

 

I agree that runners follow the Turner path all the time -- and the rules allow them to! The rules also say that if contact occurs on that path, interference should be called on the runner. It's a risk they take.

 

I'm all for changing the rules and the base to lessen that risk, and reduce the required ump judgement.

With Pressly on one side, and Dozier and Rodney on the other, that means at least one player from last year’s Twins 2018 team will walk away with a 2019 World Series ring.

Other players may also walk away with one, but it won't belong to them. :)

A few more thoughts on the rule in question:

 

1. I still believe the rule was applied correctly, and...

 

2. It's a poor rule.

 

In no other case is the runner required to deviate from a direct base to base path to accommodate a throw. If a runner is going home from third, he is allowed to run as he sees fit, and if the throw hits him, so be it. Same at any other base, as long as the runner doesnt intentionally divert the throw. Why is home to first different? Why is there a running lane at all? It should be on the defence to avoid hitting the runner, as it is anywhere else.

 

3. If there has to be a rule for some reason, I agree with adding a portion of the running lane in fair territory. Perhaps as wide as the bag. The runner certainly shoukd have the right to run directly to the bag. But I would prefer no additional rule at all. The existing rules should be used home to first, as they are at every other base.

 

 

4. DO NOT add a second bag in foul territory. UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! This is not slow pitch softball.

Well, even their offense can't handle the likes of Strasburg. Verlander has somehow managed to lose his last 6 straight WS games (he's got something around a 5.50 ERA in the WS), and their bullpen isn't all that great. But I'm just nitpicking at this point, this is a fantastic squad all around.

Good point. While I put the odds of him opting out at 95%, it's still not a sure thing until he does it.

 

I'd wager he renegotiates, akin to Kershaw. The Nationals are going to reportedly have two priority focuses - Stras and Rendon, so both in-house guys to re-sign/renegotiate.

lol ... re-sign and resign are two very different words. The context tells me which someone means, but man, it does throw a hitch in it at times :)
