Ullger has failed as a lot of things so far (3B coach, hitting coach, bench coach)... we'll see if he's capable of failing as 1B coach too.

I really don't get the love for Ullger. If it had been me, he'd have been gone after the 3rd base coaching experiment. His 'windmilling' guys around when they had no chance was just bad on so many levels. I will SCREAM if he is around, still, because he's going to be Gardy's replacement some day. I believe that Red Wings beat reporter Jim Mandelaro tweeted that Jim Rantz confirmed to him that Glynn would be returning to Rochester to manage in 2013.

If Glynn were a coach with the Twins wouldn't he undermine Gardenhire as the losses mount (and they will lose early and often!). Others might look to Glynn for what "he thinks" as the season unfolds--that type of organization is unhealthy.

Yeah, he didn't spend nearly enough time bowling with Gardy. I think Jerry was just a victim of a numbers game. I suspect Gardy was allowed to keep half his staff and got to choose which 3 stayed.

If there's a way to screw it up, Ullger will find it.

 

And it's a big deal because every piece of institutional culture that you preserve from a regime that hasn't won a playoff series in a decade and has racked up nearly 200 losses in the two highest payroll seasons in its history represents a 'business as usual' attitude that's likely to keep failing.

 

The new hires are probably a good start, but they all represent some level of the comfort of familiarity as well. It gives me the feeling they're there to keep Gardy happy rather than shake things up. Hope I'm wrong. We'll see.

If the Twins come back in 2013 and post an 80-85 win season, I'm almost certain that Gardenhire keeps his job. That's a huge turnaround.

 

I'd say anything under 75 is considered a failure and 75-80 is pretty murky territory.

If the Twins are about a .500 team, then Gardy's job will depend on WHY they were a .500 team.

 

If, despite roster improvements, there continue to be critical injuries and .500 is seen as a pretty good result, he may get the opportunity to stay.

 

But if Ryan feels he's assembled a competitive roster and there are few injury issues, he may not see .500 as being satisfactory.

 

The last two years, Ryan's been able to rationalize that Gardy's had to pretty much deal with a roster that Bill Smith was largely responsible for and there have been some pretty critical injuries on top of that. But in 2013, this roster will be pretty much 100% Terry Ryan's doing. If the GM thinks he's done a good job of assembling talent and the team doesn't compete, the manager is going to be viewed as responsible. That's just the way things go.
