Waivers always last for 3 days, regardless of how quickly anyone puts in a claim. At the end of the 3 day period, the player is assigned to whatever team claimed him with the highest waiver priority.

 

The DFA period is a max of 7 days. So given that you need 3 days for the waiver period, you basically have up to 4 days to work out a trade, and if that fails, you put him on waivers.

Do they have to place them on waivers if they don't care about assigning them to a minor league team? Or that would be an outright release, and they would have to say that up front, and can't decide to do so at day 5 of the DFA period?

They'd still have to put him on waivers. Only after clearing waivers could they release him.
