And this is the crux of Braves Twitter. Do you read Deadspin, Mark Bowman, or have your own sources? Because there is a varying opinion depending on each group. I fall into the latter. They signed the largest single-year contract value in team history this winter and looked to add plenty more. It didn't work for multiple reasons, but I also know that they're still actively pursuing deals in April. The pure revenue is not parsed out, simply reported as a big number to engage comments just like this.

 

It's really not worth the argument.

You're just regurgitating the same straw man. Signing Donaldson for one year isn't an indicator of spending if payroll is down from the previous season and revenue continues to rise. Golf clap for "looking," but that does nothing for a team currently trying to win games.

 

We know how much revenue was generated. We know how much was spent on payroll. We know what percentage of the revenue was from real estate development. We know how much debt/interest was paid off. Are you seriously insinuating that because ownership won't come out and explicitly say "we're using baseball money to fund outside interests," those dots can't be connected? 

 

Again, if it's about maintaining access or keeping up a public persona then just say so and we'll move on. If you're privy to information nobody else has then feel free to share it. Spare us all from the fallacious "I have sources you don't," argument.

No one said they're going to give him a massive pay raise during this deal. But a small bump, plus more years, would change the terms.

 

Off the top of my head, Tulowitzki, Longoria, and Braun all signed similar extensions, while they were still under their first big deal.

About like the people who claim the Angels are doing nothing to support Mike Trout, this misses a huge portion of what makes a major league team. The Orioles have made huge strides in the last few years and hired all the right people this winter. Things are pointing the right direction for the franchise.

That's laughable to say the least, but even if so, nearly any other total can be viewed as tainted as well. It's not surprising that 61 happened the season it did. Essentially every year with expansion has produced ridiculous home run totals. Go back to Babe Ruth's 60 then? Wait, he never had to face an African-American player, many of whom were superior to the major league competition at the time (let alone not having to face anywhere near 90+ MPH heat on a consistent basis). Giancarlo Stanton had 59 in 2017 in a pitcher's ballpark with PED testing in place. Maybe he's the guy you want to put on the pedestal? Oh, wait, no, there was the whole ball controversy that took hold in 2017.

 

Greenberg and Foxx were pre-integration. I'm sure Ryan Howard will be presumed dirty or have his little league ballpark (also a point in Ruth's favor) tossed out on him. Most likely, there will be whining of PEDs on McGwire in 1997 along with ARod and Luis Gonzalez.

 

That would make the new home run king Ken Griffey, Jr. with 56 in 1997 your new champion.

No one's stopping you from supporting the players that used or are using PEDs, but those players willfully gave themselves and themselves only an advantage, while the pre-integration, expansion era and small ballpark players played under league mandates, none of which they had any control over.

I only take issue with making the argument personal by calling someone's position "laughable". As to how the record should be viewed, there are plenty of viable arguments and I'm not going to tell anyone theirs is undeniably incorrect..

I cannot believe that MLB has skirted around this issue...and they've attempted to continue to rip on Nick in the process. I've been chatting actively with Nick for over a year, and his statements are consistent. It's the game, the Dodgers, and Kapler who change their story to make him the villain and/or reduce incidents that should be causing the dismissal of players and upper level personnel from the game:

1. Never faced a black player.

2. at least 40 career home runs behind two other home run hitters, who happen to be black

3. would have been drastically different facing anything other than fastballs, change ups, and rare breaking pitches

I consider Aaron the career leader who passed Ruth by 41. I think if Ruth played in Aaron's era he may have less Hrs.
