Would You Trade Eduardo Escobar?

I'm not saying it does.  But treating  people like cattle does little to make them wanna play for your organization. Treating them like a valuable member of the family is what loyalty is about. And loyalty is a door that swings both ways. When players earn a raise and promotion, give it to them. And do it in a way that they feel good about it for more than monetary reasons.

This organization needs to become a place where players want to come. We are no longer Calvin Griffith's plantation.

I'm sorry, but trading a guy to a contender is not "treating them like cattle".  IMO.

If he's not signed before the trade deadline, he's going to test FA, no matter how much loyalty he feels the Twins gave him.

Trading players does not change this.  You know what makes people want to play here?

More money and winning.  Period.  Trading Escobar has literally zero effect on what you're talking about.

1)  Yes it is.  2)  You don't know that.

You are just spinning.  Eduardo is one of those guys who appreciates loyalty.

I'm only going based on years of data....

Eduardo is a family first guy. Like Mauer, who took much less money to play here. You assume all players think the same and that it is always about money. That is where you fail to understand loyalty.

I think Eduardo would like to test the FA market, sure. But not having to bother would be nice. And he would look favorably at an extension offer for market value right now.

Man, there needs to be an irony warning on this post.  After that first sentence the second paragraph gets almost too rich.

So the other 29 teams are all doing it wrong?

What makes you think Escobar isn't one of those guys who would be drooling at the chance to win a WS this year followed by a chance to return to Minnesota or any other place his heart desires?

I know it from the way he is on the field, and the respect his team mates show for him. Watch the games.  See the bench.  See Eduardo every time he hits a double.  He has replaced Dozier as the team leader.

Guys who are team leaders would prefer to stay. I am betting they offer him a starting job and an extension.

First of all, all "29 teams" don't  think like a monolithic body.  That is why some teams always seem to emerge as contenders, and others don't. So that dog won't hunt.

I don't think drooling is the right word, plus I am not saying he wouldn't make the best of things if traded. But I think guys like him would like to be shown appreciation while they are still with us.

That shouldn't be such a hard thing to understand.

So I'll put you down in the "trade him, trade him, trade him" column.  But I am saying not every [player is only about money.

So I am in the "extend, don't trade" group. Obviously.  He has earned a raise and a promotion.

and if he won't take an extension, because he wants to test FA, what would you do then?

Call up Tony Soprano to teach Eduardo about 'loyalty'... If you catch my drift.

This is a tough one. He's a leader in the clubhouse. Has gotten better each year he's gotten more playing time. Do you trade 1 of the few guys that this team has that has proven he can hit when pretty much everyone else can't? I'd trade but the return would have to be really good. Otherwise he's the kind of guy that you would build around.

Then why would he sign an extension w/o being traded? If he wants to be someplace else, he'll be someplace else whether they trade him or not.

Eduardo Escobar doesn't know what its like to play in LA or NY or Boston or wherever.  He might sign now with the Twins because he loves Minnesota.  If they trade him away, he may realize he likes that new place better.

Do people really think MLB players don't talk to others, don't know about other cities, and only know about where they live/work? I don't think that's accurate......like, not close to accurate.

I think if you do trade Escobar, be prepared and trying to trade everyone currently on the roster but Berrios and Rosario (maybe Kepler and Hildenberger, not implying they are more valuable then Escobar).

Escobar is a FA in 3 months.....why would I trade anyone signed past 2020 or 19?

Mike, in answer.... I would do everything I could to extend, even throw in a lake home. Then I would ask around if he wants to be traded, sure. I'd talk to him about it and let it be his choice is he wants to go FA instead of sign the extension.  I'd ask if he had any team in mind he may want to go to, and I'd try to put him there.  If that doesn't pan out, I would make a QO and take the draft pick. .

But, its a tough question. For both sides. I think Eduardo knows there are talented middle infielders coming up. Polanco, Gordon etc. That is three players for 2 spots, and that doesn't include Uhire, who becomes the IF bench next year....or maybe not. Though none of the kids hit like EE (except for Polanco late last year). But its a crowd, even with Dozier likely gone. In MLB, unless your name is Jeter, you would have to compete every year anyway. I actually think he might welcome the competition.

But I'd let him tell me what he wants. Then I'd act accordingly if possible.

great post.

If he'd sign for less than 7MM per year I do it for sure. If it is 12MM per year, probably, though maybe not. Above that? probably not, given his track record.

He didn't say that.

I would move him if a really good offer is made.  I also have no problem with them resigning him, I think ideally he plays 3rd with Sano at 1st or takes Dozier's spot at 2nd and one of the kids plays short.

It doesn't matter to the current situation but he sure has provided a ton of excess value from trading the bad version of Liriano for him, has to be one of the better trades in Twins history by now.

Underlying the basic question is the little known fact that the Twins have a lot of really good middle infielders.  Polanco, Gordon, and Adrianza are major league ready.  Then others in the pipeline. So that detracts from the urgency to do something. Both EE and Doze get QOs.

Those afraid of getting nothing to show for it, remember, a QO gets you a draft pick. A trade gets you about that too....although the prospect you get in a trade may be further along. A guy, even a good guy, who will play for you for three months only... maybe.... is not worth all that much.

But I don't know, can the Twins only give one QO?

they got Mejia for Nunez....Mejia is a number 4 or 5 starter...I'd be thrilled if they added a SP that good, who had 6 years of control.....

But that assumes that he won't prefer playing in a different city. It assumes he would want to come back over staying in LA or some other place that might be a better place to play. You cannot assume he wants to come back T.

You cannot assume that regardless you trade him or not.

At least you are getting something back for him this way, instead of letting him walk.

Says who? Rochester? Reality check....... Mejia is not even in the major leagues.

Thank you for posting such an opinion-evoking question.

At the risk of picking proverbial nits, of course one would trade him for Trout and one would not trade him for the Met's 37th round pick from the 2016 draft.

I would pose the question: for what would one trade Eddy #2?

under control....as if that wasn't obvious. I'm not dealing Buxton, Sano, Kepler, Rosario....not unless it is something amazing. Nor Berrios or Romero.

sorry if somehow I wasn't clear.....
